EDUopinions Student Reviews Guide 2025: Best (and Worst) Degrees for Job Prospects

28/01/2025
5-second summary
  • Job hunting is a crucial consideration when applying for a degree, especially for clearly-mapped career paths.
  • EDUopinions analysed 3,825 student reviews from 2024 to rank the best and worst degrees for job prospects.
  • Medicine, Dentistry, and MBA rank as top degrees for career prospects with high demand for graduates.
  • Degrees like Performing Arts and Psychology receive low ratings, highlighting challenges in competitive job markets.

Job hunting isn’t the only thing you’ll be thinking about when you apply for a degree, but it’s still a pretty important factor. For some degrees with a clearly-mapped career path, it’s obvious where you’ll be working once you graduate. For others, students have more freedom in their job hunt, which can come with its own challenges.

So, to find out which degrees are the best (and worst) for job prospects, we’ve analysed thousands of reviews posted on EDUopinions in 2024. For each review, students can give a separate ‘career prospects’ rating, which can reflect a variety of factors including the relevancy of the curriculum; quality of careers services; and how well the university prepares students for the job market.

Based on these ratings, we’ve ranked the top 10 best degrees and the top 10 worst degrees for job prospects. We’ve also linked real student reviews for each subject, so you can find out what real students say about their experience!

This blog is part of the EDUopinions Student Reviews Guide 2025. Read more of the articles in this series.

What are the Best Degrees for Job Prospects in 2024?

EDUopinions Reviews Guide 2025 Best and Worst Degrees Job Prospects

Summary and Methodology

To find out which subjects are the worst and best for job prospects, we analysed ratings from 3,825 student reviews posted between January 1st 2024 and December 31st 2024. These reviews were for universities in countries in the UK and Europe with at least 10 reviews. Each subject had to have at least 20 individual reviews to be included.

EDUopinions reviewers don’t have to have already graduated to review their university. As a result, career prospects ratings more often highlight aspects of career service and curriculum, as opposed to the experience of job hunting after a degree.

10. Development Studies (4.25/5 Career Prospects Rating)

Development Studies Jobs

Development Studies degrees examine issues such as global poverty, inequality, and sustainable development, and give students a broad view of how government policies impact development. A Development Studies degree is most often a path to careers in the government, NGOs, or policy research organisations.

Although Development Studies isn’t as popular a degree as perhaps International Studies or Politics, students are more favourable about job prospects on this programme than alternatives. Politics students, by comparison, give their degree 4.10/5 for career prospects on EDUopinions.

An Enriching and Comprehensive Learning Experience

My experience at the University of Amsterdam in the International Development Studies programme has been exceptional.

The highlight:
The depth of the curriculum, the global focus, and the opportunity to work on practical, real-world projects that align with international development.

The curriculum is both rigorous and diverse, providing an excellent foundation in global development issues. I especially appreciate the focus on strategic development, community empowerment, and cross-cultural collaboration. The professors are knowledgeable and supportive, fostering an environment that encourages critical thinking and engagement. The flexibility of the programme allows me to tailor my studies to areas of personal interest, which has been invaluable in pursuing my career goals. The university also offers a vibrant international community, enriching my learning experience. While the workload can be challenging, it has prepared me for future roles in international development. I would highly recommend this programme to anyone passionate about making a positive global impact

Sociology and International Development BA

For anyone thinking of studying International Development and Sociology in Sussex University as a BA, here is my take on things:

The course does an amazing job at blending social theories with real word issues for example: Inequality, poverty and global development etc.

The professors are extremely helpful and give great advice as well as one to one session to help students that may have some struggles with some modules in the course.

My only cons is, is that due to Sussex University being the number one Uni for International Development and also being fairly high in ranking for Sociology the work load can be a pain but the University have a fantastic support system for this.

9. International BUsiness (4.26/5 Rating)

Jobs after International Business Degree

International Business is a type of business degree that focuses on global business topics including trade, international law, intercultural communication and global economics. In comparison to a more country-focused business degree, an International Business degree can help students who want to manage diverse teams in multinational organisations who operate in multiple countries or global regions.

It’s no surprise that this degree ranks as one of the top for job prospects on EDUopinions. 87% of students who pursue graduate management education (that is, a postgraduate business degree) say that the degree increased their employability. Certainly, if you want to start a career abroad, this could be a good option for you.

Great practical University

HZ University of Applied Sciences has a supportive, close-knit community and strong focus on practical learning, making it a great choice for hands-on experience. The small class sizes allow for personalized attention from professors, which I find valuable. The international environment is also a plus, as you get to meet students from all over the world and gain diverse perspectives.
However, being in a smaller town, it may feel quieter compared to larger cities, and social or cultural activities are somewhat limited. Also, some resources, like student facilities or library resources, could benefit from further development.
Overall, I would recommend HZ for students who prefer a more personal, community-oriented learning environment and value applied learning experiences over a bustling city atmosphere.

Earth and Marine Sciences Career Prospects

Demand for marine biologists was projected to grow by 5% between 2020 and 2030 as more organisations study the impact of global warming on our oceans. As a result, Earth and Marine Sciences graduates can work in a wide range of careers including research, academia, government, and the energy sector.

Given the specificity of the degree, graduates are in-demand, though how well-prepared you are for a career in marine sciences can depend on how much practical coursework you undertake during your degree.

Challenges you to be a great researcher

The university programmes are quite intense and requires a lot of dedication and hours and pushes you to the limits of critical thinking, but that is what moulds an engineer in true sense, the bridging between academia and industry is commendable. The only problem is the lack of parity of tution fee for Non-EU international students which is almost 10x compared to others if you don’t secure a scholarship.

7. Economics (4.31/5 Rating)

Economics Jobs

Economics isn’t often seen as an in-demand university subject, especially not in comparison to business studies. However, an academic knowledge of economics can be an advantage in many different careers, and graduates may go on to work as financial analysts, policy advisors, or as consultants, in addition to working as economists.

Employers note that, as well as technical statistical and analytical skills, economics students often acquire transferable skills that can help them in the job market. These include communication and leadership skills.

Career possibilities

As an international graduate from the University of Southampton, my experience was transformative. The university’s vibrant and inclusive environment made it easy to feel at home despite being far from my own country. The academic rigor was matched by outstanding support from faculty, who were always approachable and eager to help.
Southampton’s cutting-edge facilities, such as the Hartley Library and advanced labs, played a crucial role in enhancing my learning experience. Beyond academics, the Students’ Union was a hub of activity, offering a diverse range of societies and events where I made lifelong friends and broadened my horizons. Living in Southampton was equally rewarding—the city offers the perfect blend of coastal charm and urban amenities. From exploring the New Forest to unwinding at Ocean Village, I found plenty of ways to de-stress.
Graduating from the University of Southampton not only equipped me with the skills to excel in my field but also shaped me into a more confident and culturally aware individual. It’s a chapter I’ll cherish forever.

Nursing Top Degree for Jobs

It sounds obvious to say that nursing graduates are in-demand. Healthcare systems around the world are in need of trained nurses in doctors surgeries and hospitals. Indeed, by 2030, it’s estimated that Europe will have a shortfall of 2.3 million nurses. So, it’s a good time to train as one.

Nursing students can also explore careers in specialised fields like pediatric (children) or critical care nursing, increasing the range of career options available to graduates.

4. Business and Strategy (4.35/5 Rating)

Jobs in Business and Strategy

Business and strategy degrees are typically focused on wider business skills, such as how to analyse markets, create business plans, and manage people effectively. Graduates will be prepared to take senior management positions at companies, but can also work as consultants, with some graduates exploring graduate programmes at consulting firms like Deloitte or McKinsey.

EDUopinions student reviewers score Business and Strategy degrees higher for career prospects than a general international business degree, suggesting that this all-rounder could be a more profitable option.

Best Degrees for Job Prospects Medicine

Our reviewers consider Medicine to be an even better degree for career prospects than nursing. Naturally, doctors are always in-demand, and while the predicted shortfall of doctors in Europe isn’t as stark as for nurses (600,000 compared to 2.3 million), it still means that graduates of Medicine are pretty much guaranteed to find a role.

the best of all time

Studying at the Medical University of Warsaw is one of the most important life experiences for me. The curriculum is demanding but well-organized, and the academic staff is of a very high standard. The clinical internships that we do in hospitals in Warsaw provide invaluable experience and prepare us for future work as doctors. I really appreciate the support that the university offers – both from lecturers and the availability of teaching materials. The administration could work a bit more efficiently, especially when it comes to documents or schedules, but overall, it is not a big problem. Warsaw is a dynamic place to study – the city offers many opportunities, both academically and socially, although the cost of living can be higher than in other cities. Medicine at UCLan

If you are planning to study medicine, UCLan has the perfect MBBS programme. As someone who learns by doing/seeing rather than reading/listening, the programme at UCLan caters to me perfectly. With early-patient contact and using visual cues to understand subjects, UCLan ensures that your understanding is well-rounded. Additionally, since medicine is a course that requires so much recollection and understanding of vast topics, the programme incorporates a lot of learning tools, such as active recall and repeated repetition, to ensure you are well-versed in your knowledge. 2. MBA (4.35/5 Rating)

MBA degree job prospects

Given that an MBA (Master of Business Administration) is a step-up from a standard Master’s degree, it makes sense that students score it highly for career prospects. Students on an MBA typically already have some work experience, and can use their degree to progress to more senior roles in business or even launch their own company.

An MBA curriculum can be fairly broad, or students can choose an MBA specialisation that matches with their preferred career path, giving them specific skills that match the job market. The degree opens plenty of doors for graduates, including in finance, technology, healthcare, and consulting. However, students should be aware that the MBA is a more advanced degree and students are often in their late-20s or 30s.

Top Degree for jobs Dentistry

Here it is: the best degree for job prospects! We shouldn’t be surprised that Dentistry takes the top spot, as this degree frequently appears in lists of the most in-demand graduates and the highest-paid graduates. A dentistry degree is a specialist degree that offers theoretical and practical knowledge that prepares students for a career as a dentist.

Graduates might work in public or private hospitals, or even set up their own dental clinics. The UK has a particularly acute shortage of dentists, with fewer available dentists than similar European countries like France and Germany, but there are job opportunities available for newly-trained dentists across Europe. The Worst Degrees for Job Prospects – as Voted by Students

As well as looking at the best degrees for job prospects, we also looked at the worst. Which degrees scored the lowest for their career prospects rating? Here are the top 10.

10. Performing Arts (4/5 Career Prospects Rating)

Performing Arts Worst Job Prospects

A Performing Arts degree can cover everything from acting, music, dance, and theatre production. It’s a broad degree, which may be the reason for its low career prospects score. Additionally, it’s well-known that the theatre jobs market is competitive, and graduates in areas with larger TV and film industries (such as London, Berlin or Amsterdam) have an advantage over students in smaller cities.

Wide variety of topics to learn about

Bath Spa is a great university that offers a range of creative and non creative courses. I studied acting and found that there was a wide range of topics taught such as: acting classes, comedy classes, movement classes and voice classes. However, i believe that some of content taught could use some modernising to make the course more appealing to a wider spectrum of people. The tutors were supportive and approachable which added to the overall experience to make it positive.

Campus life was great! There was a lovely Student’s Union on the main campus which regularly held events and serves good food and drink. The campus itself is also stunning, with lakes, an Italian Garden and endless fields to walk in. It is a truly special and beautiful place to study.

Hell of a ride

It’s been two years now since I graduated from LUCA School Of Arts in Leuven in the Dramatic Arts. I must say that my time there has been a hell of a ride, with very beautiful, educating and illuminating moments, but als with a lot of frustration and confusion with the institute. I felt like the internal organization of the institute had a lot of flaws and was in need of change. Structurally but also when it comes to diversity and representation (more women, people of colour, queer people, etc). I think this was my main frustration with the school and its internal structure. On the other hand I do have to say that this school changed my life. Learning about the art of theatre made me discover myself in a total different way that was almost cathartic. I think it can be an amazing institute for young people to discover that, but I would love to see it improve in order to provide a more qualitative education!

Careers in Psychology

Also surprising is the fact that Psychology ranks lower than Performing Arts for career prospects. Graduates certainly have a wide range of careers open to them, for example in clinical psychology, research, and counselling, but very often, a broad bachelor’s in Psychology on its own isn’t going to gain you access to these high-paying jobs. Clear passion for education

I came in thinking it would be just another academic experience, but every class has turned out to be a game-changer. The professors here are phenomenal—they don’t just teach from the book, they bring the subject to life with real-world examples, current industry insights, and interactive discussions that make you actually excited to learn. It’s clear they have a passion for what they do, and that energy is contagious. I’ve never felt so engaged in my studies before, and it’s amazing how they prepare you for real-life challenges, not just exams. I thought I was signing up for a good education, but what I got was an unforgettable journey that’s shaping me into a confident, well-rounded professional.

6. Social Policy (3.97/5 Rating)

Social Policy Jobs

Social Policy is a multidisciplinary degree, meaning it draws from a range of subjects including politics, history and international relations. As a result, graduates can take a range of career paths – which can sometimes be detrimental to overall career prospects. As with other social studies degrees like Psychology, the quality of networking, volunteering and internships during your degree can affect how easy it is to find a job when you graduate.

Global Health Challenges: Thought-Provoking

This course on Global Health Challenges was both inspiring and intellectually stimulating. It covered pressing issues like health inequities, infectious diseases, and the role of policy in improving global health outcomes. The interactive seminars and case studies encouraged critical thinking and collaboration. The lecturers were incredibly knowledgeable and approachable, which made the learning environment very engaging. However, I felt that more practical workshops focusing on data analysis tools for public health would have further enhanced the learning experience.

5. Communication (3.96/5 Rating)

Careers Communication Degree

Communication studies explore subjects like public relations, journalism, and digital media. As a reasonably specialist subject, you would expect career prospects to be high, but the media can be a ruthlessly competitive market, with many graduates competing for placements in online journalism and print media.

The University is pretty new, fresh building, but a bit small (The library is always full). The classes can be both interesting or very useless. Some professors are clearly not qualified to teach, some of them do not know how to engage with students and actually teach them something. The students at this university are pretty cool, from all kinds of places, but you won’t necessarily engage with a lot fo them as it is a big city and there aren’t much social places on campus.

4. History (3.91/5 Rating)

History Degree Jobs

So, History beats Philosophy as the humanities subject with the lowest career prospects rating. This can partly be explained by the fact that students often enter a history degree because they have a genuine passion for the subjects, for example, in Ancient Rome or the Medieval period. Again, though, because the degree is multidisciplinary and doesn’t prepare students for any degree in particular, students may feel unprepared for the reality of the jobs market when they graduate, resulting in lower career prospects.

Historia UCM - pre-Bologna system

The History degree at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), particularly under the old pre-Bologna system, was a mixed bag of experiences. One of its greatest strengths was the freedom it offered, both in the curriculum and teaching methods. This allowed for a diverse range of approaches by professors, providing students with varied perspectives and ways of engaging with the material.

However, the degree was hindered by its old-fashioned structure. The predominant reliance on lecture-based teaching created a one-way flow of information, with minimal interaction, participation, or collaborative learning. There was a noticeable absence of projects, research opportunities, and dynamic classroom activities. Instead, assessment depended almost entirely on written exams at the end of each semester, leaving little room for continuous evaluation or practical application of knowledge. Of course this was not the case with every department and especially the final two years of the degree showed noticeable improvement, with some professors incorporating more participatory activities and fostering greater engagement in their courses.

Overall, while the degree provided a solid theoretical foundation and breadth in historical studies (I’d dare say more so than within the current framework), it lacked the modern, participatory methodologies that could have made the learning experience more engaging and rounded.

Average Education, Limited Campus Life

The university seems to lack a strong focus on fostering critical thinking and a socially transformative mentality. The university lacks ethnic and international diversity. A more diverse student body and faculty could enrich the learning environment by bringing different perspectives and experiences. Despite having great professors, many rely on textbook-like teaching rather than interactive teaching methods coming from engaged, experienced instructors. Average education quality that does not fully engage students or encourage deep understanding. One significant drawback is the lack of a vibrant social and campus life. There are limited opportunities for students to engage in extracurricular activities.

3. Civil & Structural Engineering (3.91/5 Rating)

Civil and Structural Engineering Worst for jobs

A huge surprise on this list is the fact that Civil and Structural Engineering ranks as the third worst subject for career prospects in Europe. This technical degree focuses on designing and constructing critical public infrastructure like bridges, buildings, and roads. While these skills are certainly in-demand, particular in regions of the world that are realising the need to modernise infrastructure, you’ll have to compete against other skilled graduates for roles.

A Balanced Learning Experience

Overall, my program has provided a solid foundation in Civil Engineering, offering a mix of theoretical knowledge and practical experience. The curriculum is well-structured, with most courses designed to align with industry demands. Professors are generally approachable and knowledgeable, with a few standing out for their exceptional teaching and mentorship.

The facilities, such as labs and tech resources, are satisfactory but could benefit from modernization to keep up with current industry standards. I appreciated the opportunity to work on group projects and capstone assignments that mirror challenges faced in the workplace. However, I felt that some areas, like career placement support or elective diversity, could be improved to enhance readiness for a competitive job market.

I would recommend this university to anyone passionate about Civil Engineering especially those looking for a hands-on approach to learning. Future students should be prepared to take initiative in networking and skill-building to maximize their experience here.

2. Education (3.84/5 RAting)

Worst Degrees for job Prospects Education

Education is a absolutely critical degree that prepares the teachers of tomorrow. So, how does it turn up at number two on our ranking of the worst subjects for career prospects? Well, to train as a teacher, an Education degree is often not enough, and you may have to undertake additional postgraduate teacher training. On its own, then, Education doesn’t offer clear career paths, and your ability to work in particular areas like policy or early-years teaching will depend more on your work experience.

Non EU Experience

I am a Canadian student, studying the International Teaching for Secondary Schools program at the NHL Stenden campus in Meppel. Each year, I go abroad for a Teaching Practice where I intern at a school ranging from 3 to 12 weeks, depending on the of study. Nothing compares to the experience you gain from teaching abroad at international schools all over the world! The number of opportunities this course has is unlike anything I have ever seen. However, it is important to note that each time you go abroad, you must finance these internships yourself. This means paying for flights, visas, police clearances and accommodation. A lot of the time, you will be paying double rent as well – rent in the Netherlands and rent in the country of your internship. There are scholarships and certain grants you can apply for; however, there is no guarantee that you receive these.
Being a non-EU student in the Netherlands is a lot trickier than I had anticipated and at times, I wish I had an EU passport! For example, your work hours are limited to 16 hours a week and you need a work visa. This makes finding a job relatively difficult because the employer needs to pay for the visa, and they are not cheap. Through DUO, students can apply for free travel and a grant from the government if they work more than 32 hours a month. I work roughly 50 – 60 hours a month and still do NOT qualify because I do not have an EU passport, or an EU ID. NHL Stenden offers various job opportunities to students such as working on the promo team and completing various tasks that EU students can declare as working hours and get paid for. Non-EU students cannot be paid despite it being the exact same work. Don’t get me wrong, finding a job is not impossible! I was fortunate enough to find a job at the Jumbo grocery store, 200 meters away from my place. My colleagues are amazing. They help teach me Dutch and are always willing to help me when I don’t understand. So as a non-EU student looking for a job, be patient. There is an employer out there willing to help, you just need to find them.

1. Art & Design (3.69/5 Rating)

Art and Design Careers

Art and Design is a common sight on rankings of degrees with low graduate outcomes. This is largely down to the subjective nature of the subject, as well as the wide variety of career paths students can choose to go down. For many students, an art degree is a pathway to a life as a freelance creative – but being self-employed can be challenging, and doesn’t offer the same security as a full-time job.

According to data from the UK, graduates of art, design, creative and performing arts degrees have some of the highest unemployment rates after university, up to 44%. However, this certainly isn’t suggesting that you can’t get a job after an art and design degree. Art graduates are often skilled in creative thinking, critical thinking and communication, which are valued in any workplace.

Conclusion

So, what do you think of our ranking of the best and worst degrees for job prospects in Europe? Have our student reviewers got it right?

Importantly, the ‘worst’ subjects for career prospect ratings don’t receive significantly low ratings. The average career prospects rating across all 40 subjects included was 4.12; many of the lowest-rated subjects aren’t far off this average. However, many of our reviewers are current students and not recent graduates, which may explain the slightly higher averages across the board.

Are you studying or have you recently graduated from any of the above degrees? Tell us your experience and give your own career prospects rating by writing a review.
