The Top 10 Student Cities in Europe 2026

Student Reviews Guide 2026 Top 10 Student Cities

Summary and methodology

To create this ranking, we analysed reviews posted on EDUopinions between January 1st 2025 and December 31st 2025. Then, we filtered by university country, selecting only European countries with at least 10 reviews (including the UK). This gave us a total of 3,475 reviews to analyse.

To create a ranking of the best student cities, we filtered locations to include only those that received more than 50 student reviews. In the 2025 edition of this ranking, we filtered by at least 75 student reviews; the reduction is due to fewer student reviews posted on EDUopinions in 2025 than in 2024.

These locations were ranked according to their ‘student life’ rating, which is the rating most likely to reflect student lifestyle, city life, and extracurricular experiences. This ranking ranks the largest cities on the list by student population, global standing, and population size.

10. Milan, Italy (3.73/5 Student Life Rating)

Milan

Milan is Italy’s fashion and education capital, hosting over 200,000 students across multiple prestigious institutions, including Politecnico di Milano, Italy’s largest technical university, the University of Milan, and, for business-minded students, the top-ranked Bocconi University.

Beyond academics, Milan offers unparalleled opportunities in fashion, finance and technology – it’s home to Italy’s stock exchange and the headquarters of major global brands including Pirelli, Versace, and Armani. Living costs are higher than in other European cities (though EDUopinions reviewers rank the city third for value for money), but students benefit from excellent public transport, vibrant nightlife and weekend access to the Alps and Italian lakes.

Bocconi shapes and is still shaping me.

Being at Bocconi means you’re constantly immersed in an atmosphere charged with ambition and curiosity. Everywhere you turn, classmates challenge you to think bigger and dig deeper—whether it’s over coffee between lectures or during late-night study sessions. That intellectual energy is infectious and pushes you to raise your own standards every day.

One thing I’ve learned is that the professors here genuinely want to see you succeed—but with classes that can swell into the hundreds, you can’t wait for them to come find you. You have to be the one to raise your hand after class, drop by office hours, or shoot off an email. When you do, you’ll discover they’re more than willing to guide you through complex theories or offer career advice.

What really sets Bocconi apart is the sheer breadth of its offerings. No matter your passion—finance, law, public policy, or data science—there’s a program built around top-tier faculty and real-world connections. The university doesn’t just teach you concepts; it opens doors to internships, research projects, and global networks that can truly shape your future.

A Hidden Gem in the Heart of Europe

I’m thrilled to share my experience as a student at the University of Warsaw! What makes this university stand out is the exceptional quality of its professors. My professors in the Faculty of Law are not only knowledgeable but also bring real-world expertise to the classroom, having practiced law themselves. They’re approachable and genuinely care about their students’ growth.

The university’s diverse course offerings have also impressed me, with a range of subjects that cater to different interests and career goals. I’ve particularly appreciated the interdisciplinary approaches that combine humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences.

Campus life is vibrant, with historic buildings and modern facilities blending seamlessly together. I’ve enjoyed exploring the campus, attending workshops, and participating in student groups like the Law Students’ Association. Warsaw itself is an exciting city that offers a great balance of affordability, culture, and entertainment.

My experience with the Erasmus exchange program has been a highlight, allowing me to study abroad and gain valuable perspectives. Overall, my time at the University of Warsaw has been enriching, challenging, and unforgettable. If you’re considering studying here, I highly recommend it

8. Paris, France (4.01/5 Rating)

Paris 2

Paris remains the ultimate dream destination for countless students worldwide. Though the city has dropped significantly in our student city ranking compared to last year, when it placed 3rd with a score of 4.05, its reputation for culture, cuisine, and events still attracts students.

Whilst Paris’s reputation for expense is partly deserved (the city ranks second-worst on this list for value for money), student discounts make museums, transport and even Michelin-quality meals surprisingly accessible – and university restaurants serve three-course meals from just €3.70. It’s also a global economic centre, offering countless opportunities to intern at some of the world’s best companies during a degree at one of the city’s prestigious Grandes Écoles – such as ESCP Business School, IÉSEG School of Management, and EDHEC Business School.

I really enjoyed my time at LCB! I’ve found that my skills when I entered the work force were much higher than others. I think though there was a big portion missing in recipe development and composition. True- we did learn it through memorizing the recipes, but we really were missing classes on how different ingredients affect the final textures.. how you can change them… etc. That I still am not an expert in .. and I create recipes! Ouf! Also, I don’t know if you still do a month of sugar work… but that really wasn’t necessary and should be either cut or minimized to just 2 lessons. It’s such a niche skill to know that I would have really preferred more technical skills. I loved the old location. The “rumors” I’m getting about the new location are that it’s not as good, unfortunately – that i’s become more of a money focused/marketing machine. I really hope that this image can be fixed as I love LCB and enjoyed my time there! Oh also – there should be more help for students to get jobs and featuring old students accomplishments – from cookbook launches to new bakeries so that current and old students can support them.

7. Lisbon, Portugal (4.06/5 Rating)

Portugal’s capital has emerged as one of Europe’s hottest student destinations, with around 147,000 students in its metropolitan area – a number that continues to grow each year. The city offers sunshine, affordability and top-ranked institutions in abundance, including the University of Lisbon, ranked second in Portugal.

Portugal’s welcoming attitude toward international students, English-friendly environment, and growing tech scene (attracting companies like Google and Web Summit) make the city also appealing to those looking for a new career alongside their degree. Add in weekend trips to Sintra’s palaces or the Algarve’s beaches, and you’ve got an unbeatable student lifestyle.

An excellent and welcoming university experience

The University of Lisbon, especially the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning (IGOT), offers an outstanding academic experience. The professors are knowledgeable, supportive, and passionate about their subjects, which makes classes engaging and inspiring.

The study programs are well-structured, combining solid theoretical foundations with practical applications. The campus environment is friendly and diverse, with students from many different backgrounds, creating a truly international atmosphere.

One aspect that really stands out is how efficient and organized IGOT is — administrative processes are fast and the staff are always willing to help.

Overall, I highly recommend the University of Lisbon and IGOT to anyone interested in geography, planning, or related fields. It’s a place where you can learn, grow, and feel part of a dynamic and supportive academic community.

Project-based learning

Nova SBE exceeded my expectations in many ways. The curriculum is up-to-date and very aligned with industry needs, especially in fields like analytics, economics, and sustainability. What stood out to me most was the strong emphasis on practical, project-based work — you don’t just learn theory, you apply it to real datasets, startups, and case challenges.

The career services team was helpful, especially if you’re proactive. I got access to internships and events with major employers across Europe. Professors are approachable and open to feedback, and the school really encourages an entrepreneurial mindset.

On the flip side, housing in Carcavelos can be expensive, and student life can feel a bit quiet outside of class unless you actively join clubs or groups.

Overall, I’d say Nova is a great fit if you’re looking for a school that combines academic quality, practical skills, and a calm yet inspiring setting by the sea.

6. London, United Kingdom (4.09/5 Rating)

Study Engineering in London

It isn’t at all surprising that London appears on our student city ranking – it’s one of the world’s top destinations, hosting some of the world’s best universities and business schools (it also ranked number one in Europe on the QS Best Student Cities ranking). The city ranks among the top three on this list for factors including facilities, professors, and internationality, which tells you all you need to know about the strong academic environment in this diverse, lively capital.

Indeed, London is home to over 400,000 students, with UK and international students alike drawn to famed institutions such as University College London (UCL) and King’s College London. However, the city’s diversity means there’s an institution for everyone, and the city’s varied cultural offerings – world-class museums, West End theatre, historic landmarks and countless music venues – add to the exceptional student life.

A Supportive Environment That Encouraged Growth

I attended University of Greenwich for 2 years, and overall, it was a positive and transformative experience. What stood out most to me was the supportive faculty. Many profssors went out of their way to make sure students understood the material and felt encouraged. In particular, the psychology and literature departments were filled with passionate, approachable instructors who clearly cared about both the subjects and the students.

Campus life was vibrant without being overwhelming. There were plenty of clubs and events, which made it easy to meet people with similar interests. The student body was generally welcoming, and I felt like I could find my place without pressure to “fit in” a certain way.

Academically, the workload could be intense at times, especially during midterms and finals, but it prepared me well for post-grad opportunities. One thing I wish the school had improved was the career services support—resources were there, but they sometimes felt underutilized or hard to access.

If you’re looking for a University with a balance of academic rigor and a friendly, inclusive community, I would definitely recommend University of Greenwich.

5. Dublin, Ireland (4.11/5 Rating)

Dublin

Dublin punches well above its weight as a student city, combining Irish warmth with world-class education and booming career opportunities. The city has a well-known and thriving tech scene and is home to the European headquarters of Google, Facebook, and Amazon, which could lead to lucrative internship opportunities and contribute to a high student life score.

The Irish capital hosts over 125,000 university students, and Ireland’s largest university is University College Dublin (UCD), which attracts students from over 152 countries. Dublin’s literary heritage (Joyce, Wilde, Beckett) and legendary pub culture add considerable culture and character to the student experience, while English-language instruction, post-study work opportunities and weekend escapes to Ireland’s dramatic coastline make Dublin increasingly popular with students from Ireland and abroad.

An Academically Heavy Approach

Trinity places great emphasis on the academic side of your chosen field over the industry side. There are no opportunities to get real-world experience or internships, unlike many other Dublin universities, which made me feel like I was at a disadvantage when I graduated.

4. Barcelona, Spain (4.18/5 Rating)

Barcelona

Barcelona captivates students with its irresistible combination of Mediterranean beaches, modernist architecture, vibrant culture and excellent universities. The city is home to Spain’s top institution, the University of Barcelona, and second-place institution, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. The city is also a thriving economic centre, and is home to top business schools, including IESE Business School, the highest-ranked in the city, and smaller, more close-knit institutions such as C3S Business School.

Barcelona’s unique appeal extends beyond academics. Gaudí’s architectural masterpieces, world-class museums, beach culture, and legendary nightlife create an unforgettable student experience. Barcelona doesn’t rate extremely highly in other review factors – its highest scores are for internationality and professors, which suggests that a strong student life can make up for other, more average parts of the student experience.

A Practical International Business Program

I studied International Business at ESCI, and overall, I had a really solid experience. The program is well-structured, with a strong focus on real-world business cases and international trade. Most professors had actual industry experience, which helped bridge the gap between theory and practice.

Classes were interactive, not just lectures—there were a lot of group projects and presentations, which pushed me to improve my communication and teamwork. The workload was demanding at times, especially during the final term, but it never felt unmanageable.

The location in Barcelona is a huge plus. It’s a global city with a diverse student body, so you’re constantly exposed to different perspectives. The campus itself is modest, not huge, but it’s clean, well-equipped, and in a good area.

One area that could improve is career services. While we had some job fairs and guest lectures, I felt there could be more consistent internship support. A few classmates found placements through their own contacts instead.

If you’re looking for a hands-on, internationally-focused program in a lively city, ESCI is a solid option. I’d recommend it to students who are self-motivated and want a practical business education with a global outlook.

Teaching quality: Strong, practical approach

An Experience in the Heart of Barcelona

Studying at C3S Business School has been a good experience overall. The school is located in the heart of Barcelona, which is a big plus. The city is vibrant and international, and that energy definitely carries over into the classroom. The environment is very diverse, with students from all over the world, which makes discussions more interesting and helps you build a global network.

The classes are practical and focused on real business challenges, not just theory. Many of the professors have industry experience, which makes the lessons more relevant and easier to apply in real life. Most of them are also very approachable and willing to help outside class hours.

That said, the school is relatively small and still growing, so sometimes there are areas that could be more organized, like communication about schedules or student services. But the administration is generally responsive when you reach out.

If you’re looking for a business school that offers flexible programs, international exposure, and a chance to study in one of Europe’s most dynamic cities, C3S is definitely worth considering.

3. Bologna, Italy (4.21/5 Rating)

Bologna Italy

Bologna holds a special place in Italian and world history as the home of the world’s oldest continuously operating university, the University of Bologna, founded in 1088.  The institution is home to almost 97,000 students, making it one of Europe’s largest institutions – and giving Bologna a distinctly different culture to other historic Italian cities.

Indeed, students make up a significant share of the city’s residents, creating a youthful, energetic atmosphere. Additionally, the city’s medieval architecture, UNESCO-listed porticoes and rich cultural offerings provide a stunning backdrop for student life. Bologna is also Italy’s gastronomic capital, where students can enjoy authentic pasta, traditional osterias and local wines – though Bologna does score worst on our list for value for money, so you might consider how much you’ll pay for the privilege of studying in such a culturally rich location.

So for the goods, excellent faculty and student community. There is so much happening in the city during weekends that you’ll really enjoy your time here.
The bads – the city has one of the hardest water quality i have ever seen, even though its fit for drinking, it has so much calcium in it that it’ll cause kidney stones. Also due to the tram work, the traffic and bus routes are a mess.

2. Amsterdam, the Netherlands (4.23/5 Rating)

Amsterdam Student City

Our second-best student city, as rated by real students, is the picturesque capital of the Netherlands, Amsterdam. Being a student in Amsterdam means combining world-class universities with an unmatched quality of life in one of Europe’s most beautiful and bike-friendly cities. The city has two main universities, the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU), which welcome more than 70,000 combined.

The city’s canal-ringed centre (a UNESCO World Heritage site), world-renowned museums like the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum, vibrant nightlife and open-minded culture create an inspiring, diverse environment for students. While housing is a major challenge for students, the cost of living is around 12% lower than London. Amsterdam’s compact size, international outlook, progressive values and excellent connections to the rest of Europe make it consistently rank among the world’s top student cities.

Loving it at the moment.

I’m really loving life at Amsterdam Business School! One of the best things is how accessible all the resources are – I can get to class, the library, and other facilities within 10-20 minutes. The campus is also really nice, and my accommodation has a great view of a golf course. The only thing that gets me down is the weather, but that’s just Amsterdam being Amsterdam! 1. Prague, Czechia (4.39/5 Rating)

Prague Best Student City

For the second year in a row, the Czech Republic’s capital, Prague, has topped our list of the best student cities in Europe! The Czech capital hosts approximately 120,000 students, including around 25,000 international students. At the heart of the city’s academic environment is Charles University, founded in 1348, and Central Europe’s oldest university, but international institutions in the city include Anglo-American University and the University of New York in Prague.

Part of what makes Prague a fascinating place to study is its fairytale setting – Gothic spires, baroque architecture, and medieval squares create an inspiring backdrop for student life. Plus, the city’s affordability is legendary – living costs are dramatically lower than in comparable Western European capitals, and EDUopinions reviewers also give it the best value-for-money rating of all the cities on this list. The city’s central European location also makes weekend trips to nearby destinations like Vienna, Munich, and Dresden easy. Safe, walkable, beautiful, and affordable, whilst offering serious academic prowess – Prague delivers everything students dream about.

Best-Rated Institutions in the Top 10 Student Cities

Where should you study if you want to live in one of the best student cities in Europe?

To find out, we consulted 2025 student reviews data to find the highest-rated universities and business schools in the top ten student cities. For universities to appear in this ranking, they needed to have 10 or more reviews.

London is strongly represented in this ranking, with three universities making the list. However, the ranking also proves that less well-known destinations can have top-rated universities – two universities in Prague are on the list, in addition to the University of Warsaw.

2. Anglo-American University – AAU (4.74/5 overall rating)

1. City, University of London – City (4.77/5 overall rating)

Conclusion

These are Europe’s top 10 student cities as rated by students who actually live there. Whether you’re drawn to Prague’s affordability, Amsterdam’s international vibe or Barcelona’s beach lifestyle, each location offers something unique – so keep this in mind when making your university decision.

Like last year’s ranking, there’s considerable diversity within the cities featured in our top ten, which speaks to the wide variety of experiences available across Europe. Nine countries are featured in our top ten, encompassing seven capital cities.

Additionally, this year, our data shows a strong correlation between student life ratings and internationality ratings, suggesting that students are more likely to be drawn to diverse, multicultural destinations. Top-five destinations such as Amsterdam and Barcelona certainly tick that box.

There are some losers this year, too. Madrid, Munich, and Berlin have all dropped out of the ranking of Europe’s best student cities. All three locations received fewer than 50 reviews, though in Madrid’s case, it was very close to inclusion – the city garnered 49 reviews and a student life rating of 3.98, the same as Warsaw.
