History
DBS’s history dates back to 1975 when the Accountancy and Business College was established. This institution ran evening classes which prepared students for professional accountancy exams. The school’s success and reputation led to the expansion of the college and an affiliation with Liverpool John Moores University. This relationship was brought to a mutually-agreed end in 2013 as DBS decided to attempt to achieve accreditation from Quality and Qualifications Ireland body. In 2003, Kaplan Inc., a global leader in education, acquired DBS. In 2006 DBS acquired the European Business School and in 2007 DBS expanded its operations even further with the acquisition of Portobello College in Dublin – another independent college which offers degree programmes in business and law.
StudIES at DBS
Thanks to these amalgamations, DBS became the largest independent college in Ireland – it offers more than 100 accredited programmes of study to over 9,000 students as well as welcoming international students.
The institution is organised into three schools: the School of Business and Law, School of Arts, and the Professional School. As well as theoretical components, studies at DBS have been tailored to meet the needs of relevant industries, so students graduate with an equal knowledge of the theoretical and practical. DBS Advantage, an initiative set up by the school gives students a chance to take part in a practical and realistic development programme concerning their course of study. This programme ensures DBS graduates will be able to navigate their chosen industry when they leave the school.
Student Life at DBS
There are many student clubs and societies overseen by the DBS Student Services. The college’s sports club, such as soccer, basketball, and rugby, compete at varying intervarsity levels. Students also have the opportunity to get involved in Radio DBS – the institution’s podcast radio programme which covers many aspects of student life at DBS.
Accommodation-wise, the Student Services department is on hand to help. Students must make private arrangements for their living arrangements but are helped to do this by Student Services.
