What is a Management degree?

A Management degree builds a strong foundation in a wide variety of fields including business, finance, economics and marketing. It develops students’ understanding of business practices, structures, business theory, business strategy and research as well as global economies and financial markets. Doing a Management Degree also allows students to gain skills that enable them to work with financial and numerical data effectively.

Management degrees cover different managerial roles, such as Human Resource (HR) management, hospitality management, innovation management, operations management, etc. They can be specialized into one of the areas mentioned above or follow a more general approach that covers most of these areas.

The range of management degrees is huge and includes Business Management, Management, Marketing Management, etc. They are predominantly offered in the business departments/business schools/management schools of different universities.

Benefits of a Management degree

One of the main benefits of this degree is that Management is a broad discipline, which keeps students’ career options open.

Management degrees could have a very practical focus, which is an opportunity for students to gain experience in the process of completing their degree before having started their professional careers. Management courses usually offer work placements and practical modules, which include business simulations and business creation in a simulated environment. Acquiring practical experience through these opportunities could make students stand out from the crowd in the job market once they graduate. Research-oriented Management degrees also exist for those who prefer the theoretical aspects of such a degree. Most courses, however, have established a good balance between theory and practice in order to meet the needs of all students.

Management degrees also prepare students to serve the managerial role across a wide range of areas, including HR management, hospitality management, innovation management, operations management, etc. Students can specialize in one particular area or focus on gaining knowledge across all of these areas thanks to the high availability of different management courses.

Additionally, there is a high demand for management professionals in the contemporary business world. Therefore, taking a management course is an opportunity for students to kick-start their careers and occupy a higher position in the organizational hierarchy.

management degree Structure

Management courses usually begin by introducing students to different areas covered by the managerial role, such as organizational management, business environment, statistics, accounting and finance, business growth, etc. After the first year, institutions allow students to explore the management discipline into more depth by delivering specialized modules and offering optional modules, which enable students to choose subjects that interest them the most and are most relevant to their career aspirations.

Management degrees take 3 years to complete in the UK. Don’t judge a book by its cover

This University has a prestigious reputation and I feel in actuality it only partially lives up to this. While a lovely scenic campus and an extensive library with 12 floors it still lacks in communication. This is one of the few things which I believe is a flaw with this university. When you email a member of staff for help or a query you are typically left waiting days and days until you receive a reply, by which point you have had to sort it out yourself or the problem has grown. I also think that feedback on work is sometimes lacking. I would appreciate more feedback on a piece of work on what I can improve and what I should continue to do but usually it is just generic feedback for the full class. Despite these small flaws, the university earns its prestigious title with their challenging classes and engaging tutorials where you can really delve into a topic and explore it from all angles. The wide international student population also allows for new experiences and mixing with people who you have not before and it gives you a complete different view of the world and the different cultures and lives out there.

When I first arrived at the University of Glasgow I was welcomed with Freshers Week! The most fun time of the year. Joining a society was a great way to get involved and make new friends. So far, studying at The University of Glasgow has been a lovely experience and I absolutely adore the main campus, feels like a movie!

    The diverse environment

I made many international friends during the first few weeks of my studying here at the University of Glasgow. As an international student, I’m always keen to talk to people with different cultural backgrounds than me.

An international student studying in the UK

I am originally from Greece and will review my experience at the university both as an international student studying in the UK and as a business and sociology student, reflecting on both the advantages and disadvantages of my course and the overall performance of the university. First of all, the University of Glasgow is a multinational university that accepts students from all over the world, and although the professors are always willing to help and guide you, there should have been more focus on the English academic language of the international students, as there are numerous students who struggle with the language, which affects both their performance and the overall projects in group work due to the lack of communication and task preparation. Also, as a first year international student, I faced racism from my fellow students when I could not properly explain a sociological analysis, which resulted in many other students laughing at me. I think the university staff and students should be more aware and pay attention to such incidents, as the university hosts many international students and racism, discrimination and other inequalities should be prohibited and reported. Even though the university provides wide access to academic reading and general knowledge, I believe that the business and Management course should be more focused on practical assignments and courses. As a fourth-year student, I did not have the opportunity to practise my math skills and gain adequate knowledge in finance and accounting because we only had a three-month finance course in our first year and have never practised finance, accounting, and math skills since then, which are essential for business students. Also, I think more practical assignments like working in a real business environment for a few weeks or months are important to better understand and see in practise all the knowledge we learned in theory by writing essays and reading books and articles. Student life is overall very interactive as the university organises many events for students throughout the year and the university societies are very active and organise many educational events which are good for networking and gaining knowledge. Moreover, the environment of the university is always clean, the campus is very pretty with flowers, trees and beautiful buildings, and the university community is constantly constructing new buildings, which shows their interest in the student environment and student satisfaction.

    Everything great - except feedback

Great staff, facilities, and teacher/student ratio. However, it always takes way too long to get our grades and mostly generic feedback. Excellent career service, and overall a good university that will enhance your future career prospects.

Great learning but could improve Covid measures.

I love studying at the University of Glasgow, the teachers are great and the campus is so beautiful and great location. However, I could not enjoy it as it has been pretty much 12 months of online learning. I don’t know if it is university or external rules, but very disappointed that all clubs are open and still we barely had tutorials because of ‘COVID’. Also, I feel that the administration could improve a lot, the timetable is not accurate and constantly changing. On the other hand, the library is very good, it has so many floors and plenty of books. I also appreciated having many international students at my course from all over the World. Moreover, putting in your CV you studied at the University of Glasgow is something that businesses appreciate. There is a lot of Societies, it is a shame I could not take part in them because of the pandemic. If you study the MSc in Management and Sustainable Tourism I recommend taking the Sustainable Heritage module, very interesting and the teacher is very supportive. Overall, I recommend this course but I hope uni starts doing presential courses for students.

    Not for tourism sectors

Before coming to Glasgow, I had 3.5 years of work experience in the national tourism sector. I don’t recommend those who have been already in the Tourism Industry or looking for further studies insights into sustainable tourism. This is because the first semester is theoretical classes about Business Management for all sectors and some courses are not practical for the tourism industry. Also, I am not sure for the second semester how business courses will synchronize with the tourism management aspects more in-depth.

Operation Management in Adam Smith Business School

I feel disappointed with this program, especially in Adam smith business school. The class timetable is in a mess. Thousands of changes waste my time and I can’t schedule my own time. They do not work as a team. But the good thing is that I really meet lots of great people from all over the world.

    Nice professors and environment

I would recommend my program with a bog joy however this year it was online due to covid and it is a bit stressful. But overall it is worth it.
I would suggest the university provide some English language preparation programmes. some master’s degree students still struggle writing academic works and mostly it makes some barrier in communication within the international community.
