In the beginning, the institution was an examining agency for the University of Oxford and University of Cambridge. In 1946, it received the role of distance education institution, which offered degree diplomas up to doctorate level.

The merge with Technikon South Africa, which took place in 2004, lead to the creation of the current school.

Due to the fact that it is the largest university in South Africa, UNISA attracts a third of all higher education students inthe country. On grounds of its performance, in 2015, Times Higher Education ranked it the 6th best university in South Africa.
