What is a Management degree?

A Management degree builds a strong foundation in a wide variety of fields including business, finance, economics and marketing. It develops students’ understanding of business practices, structures, business theory, business strategy and research as well as global economies and financial markets. Doing a Management Degree also allows students to gain skills that enable them to work with financial and numerical data effectively.

Management degrees cover different managerial roles, such as Human Resource (HR) management, hospitality management, innovation management, operations management, etc. They can be specialized into one of the areas mentioned above or follow a more general approach that covers most of these areas.

The range of management degrees is huge and includes Business Management, Management, Marketing Management, etc. They are predominantly offered in the business departments/business schools/management schools of different universities.

Benefits of a Management degree

One of the main benefits of this degree is that Management is a broad discipline, which keeps students’ career options open.

Management degrees could have a very practical focus, which is an opportunity for students to gain experience in the process of completing their degree before having started their professional careers. Management courses usually offer work placements and practical modules, which include business simulations and business creation in a simulated environment. Acquiring practical experience through these opportunities could make students stand out from the crowd in the job market once they graduate. Research-oriented Management degrees also exist for those who prefer the theoretical aspects of such a degree. Most courses, however, have established a good balance between theory and practice in order to meet the needs of all students.

Management degrees also prepare students to serve the managerial role across a wide range of areas, including HR management, hospitality management, innovation management, operations management, etc. Students can specialize in one particular area or focus on gaining knowledge across all of these areas thanks to the high availability of different management courses.

Additionally, there is a high demand for management professionals in the contemporary business world. Therefore, taking a management course is an opportunity for students to kick-start their careers and occupy a higher position in the organizational hierarchy.

management degree Structure

Management courses usually begin by introducing students to different areas covered by the managerial role, such as organizational management, business environment, statistics, accounting and finance, business growth, etc. After the first year, institutions allow students to explore the management discipline into more depth by delivering specialized modules and offering optional modules, which enable students to choose subjects that interest them the most and are most relevant to their career aspirations.

    How's studying in Mannheim

I am doing my Masters at the University of Mannheim and since I already did my bachelor course there, and was aware of the studies, my experience was pretty much how I expected it to be. One of the best things for me was that Uni Mannheim has a lot of partners all over the world, so there are many possibilities of doing an exchange semester. Also, the quality of education. The professors are extremely experienced and have great didacticism. I had courses in the management field, sports field and even in the pedagogical field, making the studies always very interesting and broad. I would recommend it to a friend doing both the Bachelors’s and the Master’s degree in Uni Mannheim, because student life is also really good (there are many student initiatives). The city of Mannheim is a very nice student city, so finding accommodation for your studies is quite simple. Shared flats are the most common living type and they are uploaded on a daily basis on websites and facebook groups. The city itself is not that beautiful, for students, it’s nice though. Everything is flat hence you can reach everything easily. Nightlife offers multiple options. The Uni is located in a big old German castle, so the campus is old and new at the same time. For future students, I would definitely recommend joining a student club to learn some new things and connect with other students in the free time. Also, looking for flats in the “Quadrate” (city center).

    Theory-focused, demanding, but flexible

I have taken the masters in Management in the university of Mannheim, so I won’t be able to generalize for other fields. Within the MMM course, I felt like even though the learning method depends on the area you choose to focus on (e.g. I have focused on Marketing related subjects), the overall idea is about focusing on theory, research and memorizing. Coming from a different country, I found its educational system refreshing and challenging for me. I was able to learn about management from a different scope, and focused on areas in which my home country university wouldn’t. However, I have found it rather disappointing the fact that most of grades depend solely on an exam, which has a high time pressure – no time to think, most of the time you succeed by memorizing how to solve exercises. In this way, it does not support the development of critical thinking, rather tests who can memorize best. Yet, there are courses with group projects, case studies and projects directly connected with companies, where you can definitely learn a lot. You surely need to study a lot to keep good grades there, but it is a good challenge. Another positive side to it is the fact that you build your course of studies and timetable as you wish – overall, there are only 5 mandatory courses. I would recommend you this university if you want to go to Germany or you plan to work there in the future; if you want to focus on research; if you want exams that value for 100% of the grade and have free time during the semester. However, when not and if you have a good GPA and all other documents required, there may be better options for you.

Great uni life but very competitive!

Studying in a palace is great, and the university facilities are also good.

The life in Mannheim is pretty good as everything is concentrated in the centre at a maximum 20 min walk from the university: shopping malls, restaurants, bars and clubs.

There is plenty of choice regarding your curriculum and which modules to take so you can personalise your semesters according to your preferences.

It is very competitive regarding grades and the exams tend to be long and difficult.

Overall, I’m having a great experience and thoroughly recommend.
