York University’s Communications program offers a solid academic foundation, blending theoretical knowledge with practical experience in areas like media, public relations, and digital communications. As a commuter student, I found the curriculum to be engaging and the faculty knowledgeable. The campus is well-equipped with modern facilities, including labs and study spaces, but the large commuter population can make it harder to connect with others socially, as many students come and go quickly for classes. Public transit options like the York University TTC station and GO Transit make commuting manageable, though the travel time can be long depending on where you’re coming from in the GTA.

While York offers plenty of student-run clubs and extracurricular activities , the lack of on-campus housing can make it harder to fully immerse in campus life. However, there are plenty of resources available for academic support, including a Writing Centre and career counseling , which were helpful throughout my studies. Overall, York is a great choice for students seeking a well-rounded education in communications, but commuting can limit your ability to engage in campus life as deeply as those living on-site. While commuting was challenging, lasting friendships were made.

More welcoming than other schools, relaxed and subway makes it easy to get to/get around. Seems like a good overall fit for the average student – some programs are top ranked. I would choose it again.

I emerged myself in student life and stayed committed to networking and building relationships many of which I still have 10 years later. I say school is what you make it… The administration at the time was not strong but you just have to keep pushing and communicating what you want.
