Academics at NYU

NYU offers opportunities for students to immerse themselves in numerous academic fields and develop their knowledge with the aim of making the world better. The most popular majors include Visual and Performing Arts; Social Sciences; Business, Management, Marketing, and Related Support Services; Liberal Arts and Sciences, General Studies and Humanities; and Health Professions and Related Programs.

Enrollment at NYU is approximately 50,000 students at three degree-granting campuses – Ney York City, Abu Dhabi and Shanghai. In addition to these campuses, the University has 12 academic centers in Accra, Berlin, Buenos Aires, Florence, London, Los Angeles, Madrid, Paris, Prague, Sydney, Tel Aviv and Washington, D.C.

Campus & Student Life

NYU’s primary campus is in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan. The entire campus includes more than 170 buildings scattered between Manhattan and Brooklyn with nearly 50 additional buildings overseas in the other 2 degree-granting campuses and the 12 academic centers. Despite its massive campus, NYU has designed a plan for expansion by 2031, which includes additional campus housing and modern academic spaces around its New York campuses. NYU has many schools and colleges the largest of which is the College of Arts and Sciences.

The University provides the opportunity for students to live on campus in more than 20 residence halls with spacious rooms and all necessities like kitchens, living rooms, and common areas. A few of these halls are considered to be among the nicest in the entire country. Transport is arranged for students from residence halls to the campus.

NYU boasts 450 student clubs and organizations on campus, including sports teams, fraternities, sororities, study clubs as well as a lot of clubs whose focus is on entertainment, arts and cultures, such as media clubs, the campus comedy magazine and a radio station. Sports teams are referred to as NYU Violets. The University offers its students the opportunity to play various sports competitively, such as basketball, baseball, cross country, fencing, golf, soccer, softball, track and field, tennis, volleyball, swimming and diving as well as wrestling. Surprisingly, NYU has not had a varsity football team since 1952. The home of all sports teams is the Palladium Athletic Facility but most varsity teams play their games at different facilities around Manhattan due to the lack of space for fields around campus.

Career & Alumni

NYU has a 4-year graduation rate of 76%. Its students achieve an approximately 95% success rate when it comes to finding a job or going to graduate school within 6 months of graduation with a mean salary well exceeding US$50,000. Nearly 60% of these secure a position thanks to resources provided by the University. Moreover, almost 60% of NYU students find a job before they have even graduated. Out of those that continue their education after graduation, most go into the fields of arts, humanities, and social sciences as well as computer science/technology and business. Among the top industries for the people that seek employment after graduation, entertainment/media, financial services, and education and teaching dominate.

NYU is famous for having many successful alumni among which there are heads of state, inventors and entrepreneurs, media figures, founders and CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, astronauts and many others. Up until October 2019, the University had 37 Nobel Laureates, 8 Turing Award winners, 5 Fields Medalists, and over 30 Academy Award and Pulitzer Prize winners. Among its notable alumni are Adam Sandler (actor, director, and comedian), Bill de Blasio (politician), Jared Kushner (businessman and real-estate developer). Jack Dorsey (founder and CEO of Twitter) is also among the students who have passed through NYU but dropped out before graduating.
