What is a Communications degree?

Communications is a universal degree, which explores the traditional forms of communication such as verbal, physical, visual and written communication but also extends beyond that to cover mass communication and social media. There are different types of communications degrees depending on the degree level.

Overall, Communications focuses on teaching effective communication through social media, web, print, mass media and verbal communication. However, there are two types of Communications degrees that exist. For instance, a Bachelor of Arts in Communications in the US is focused on preparing students for careers that are connected to writing, marketing, promotions, journalism and public relations. In contrast, Bachelor of Science in Communications is dedicated to the technology used in the science behind modern communication and prepares students for careers in production or sound engineering.

A Communications degree teaches students about how media and communication influences cultures, societies and people’s identities. It involves a significant amount of critical writing and research and covers different disciplines such as journalism, public relations, entertainment production, marketing, event planning and so many more disciplines, which are somehow connected to exchanging information and conveying messages. There are also different specialization options associated with this degree, including political communication, mass media, journalism, health communication, etc.

It is worth noting that a Communications degree has many intersection points with psychology, sociology, linguistics and in some cases politics.

Benefits of a Communications degree

The main benefit of a Communications degree is its universal nature. It applies to almost any subject or professional setting. For example, some of the top careers in the field of Communications include announcers, art directors, editors, broadcast and sound engineering technicians, reporters, correspondents, broadcast analysts, technical writers, writers and authors, interpreters, translators, etc. Therefore, it keeps students’ career options open and doesn’t require them to have a predetermined career path that they want to follow.

Communications degrees prepare students to make an impact from the start of their careers unlike other degrees, which require further training. This is possible thanks to the multitude of professionally accredited degrees in Communications, which develop students’ abilities based on the established standards in the field. Moreover, there are many Communications courses, which offer work placement opportunities that enable students to gain the required professional skills before they have even started their career.

Another benefit associated with Communications degrees is the fact that they develop students’ written and verbal communication skills significantly.

A major advantage of Communications over other degrees is that in most cases there are no prerequisites required to study Communications.

Communications degree structure

The duration of a Communications degree varies depending on the country and degree level. For example, Higher Education Institutions in the UK offer 3-year Bachelor’s courses. In some cases, the course may extend to four years if students are given the opportunity to spend a year abroad or in industry between the second and third year through a sandwich course. Bachelor’s degrees in Communications in the US usually take around four years to complete.

Over the duration of a Bachelor’s Communications degree, students are expected to learn and be able to apply the established communications theories by developing the technical skills required to work in a professional setting. In the first year of their studies, students learn predominantly how media and communication influences cultures, societies and people’s identities. Optional modules may introduce them to professional communication, journalism, documentary, film-making, marketing, etc. In addition to the introductory topics, this degree allows students to learn about more complex areas of communications such as interpersonal relations, brand management and linguistics at a later stage. For instance, the second and third years enable students to get a deeper understanding of theoretical concepts related to media and culture and develop practical skills in research and communications. Additionally, students may have the opportunity to take optional modules and pursue their interests in different areas related to Communications such as gender, race, youth, culture, digital media, political communication, public relations, etc.

The most common duration of a Master’s degree in Communications is between 1 and 2 years depending on the mode of study (full-time or part-time) and country.

PhD and MPhil degrees in Communications require students to dedicate anywhere between 3 and 6 years to their studies depending on the mode and country of study.

    Support for Growth

This University has been very nurturing to me personally. My programme leaders have been very supportive and considerate of students having lives outside of our studies and have been more than accommodating. I study Creative Writing and have enjoyed it thoroughly.
I will say, however that when there are crossovers in modules there seems to be a major oversight by teachers of other courses to the fact that Creative Writing students are in the room, let alone in their class. This can be infuriating at times.

Overall, I enjoy studying here and would recommend it as a place for writers to grow with teachers who care about their futures.

    Lectureres are very helpful

I studied Journalism with Public relations and the lecturers are friendly and welcoming.

If you want to study film or specialise in the media, I would recommend this university because all the facilities that you need are easy to access. if you are struggling with assignments and don’t know what to do you can always ask your lecturer for help.

They even have a spot on campus where you can go and meet students if you don’t have anyone to socialise with.

If you are looking to work for the BBC Salford university is the best place to go because the university sends vaccines for graduates who are looking for work, and some of those vacancies are from the BBC.

The only issue I had was the bus because buses can be quite inconsistent.

Overall Good Uni That Cares About Mental Health

Through my time at Salford, I have changed courses and contacted the universities well-being team. Understandably, both of these processes did take some time but once I got the help I needed it was plain sailing from there on.

It was fairly easy to find the wellbeing team for the university, as it is all on the student portal website. I had to fill in a couple forms describing my general wellbeing and then the wellbeing team emailed me asking me what appointment times would work for me. This took a few weeks and after this I had eight weeks of counselling – there is an option of continuing this further if the councillor decides it necessary.

I spent about 3 months trying to change courses and recruited the help of my university appointed councillor to help me get the process moving. she put me into contact with the assistant of the staff member I needed to talk to. from that moment onward it took a week to be accepted onto the new course. In this time I had to have a zoom meeting with said staff member, to discuss my reasoning for changing courses and to get to know each other. it was a fairly quick call, only taking 15 minuets, and they where very friendly.

My current curse is Creative Writing and I don’t have many negatives to say about the course. All the lecturers are approachable and considerate, deadlines can be bunched together but that it to be expected and all assessments are well explained. However, there have been a few scheduling conflicts with this course. For example, during the first semester there was an overlap with two modules that we where told could not be fixed. We did talk to our lecturer for one of the modules and she said she would make the recorded session available that day, instead of in a few days time like usual. Which allowed us to prepare for the workshop for that module in the afternoon.

The first course that I attended was Law, I didn’t get on with this course as I either had nothing or everything on in a day and found it quite overwhelming. Some lecturers also showcased a lack of understanding through emails containing the reasoning that I was unable to attend lectures and wanting extra help. however, there was one lecturer that really stood out and helped me start my counselling sessions earlier than expected.

Overall, I would say its a very good university.

    Lecturers that care

I have had an incredible experience at university. The lecturers, the facilities and my class mates have been brilliant. I believe that my tutors actually care about my success within the course and they are keen to help me succeed later in life. I have been given the tools to actively learn and improve my skills with the facilities that the Media City campus has to offer.

    Good facilities for media students

Having had a taste of multiple campuses at the University of Salford, it has become apparent that there seem to be good facilities for those taking media or health sciences. Generally the lecturers are kind and caring and helpful, though there are a few who are pretty terrible at giving feedback and deliver lectures in the most boring of ways. It seems a good university for research based in acoustics and has a vibrant array of ethnicity. Life in Manchester is good too with a really good music and comedy scene with its night life being average, but good on certain nights. I cannot comment on accommodation as I never stayed in university halls, however they have recently built a new development of student housing so you should be able to get somewhere that is fairly decent. Pretty much anywhere in central manchester is a commutable distance to any campus and there are good leisure facilities provided by the University. I would say the value for money is average due to the fact that student fees have risen and some lecturers can really make a hash of explaining things and some facilities and rooms are so outdated and need a refresh – having said that, there are some good lecturers there.
