What is a Management degree?

A Management degree builds a strong foundation in a wide variety of fields including business, finance, economics and marketing. It develops students’ understanding of business practices, structures, business theory, business strategy and research as well as global economies and financial markets. Doing a Management Degree also allows students to gain skills that enable them to work with financial and numerical data effectively.

Management degrees cover different managerial roles, such as Human Resource (HR) management, hospitality management, innovation management, operations management, etc. They can be specialized into one of the areas mentioned above or follow a more general approach that covers most of these areas.

The range of management degrees is huge and includes Business Management, Management, Marketing Management, etc. They are predominantly offered in the business departments/business schools/management schools of different universities.

Benefits of a Management degree

One of the main benefits of this degree is that Management is a broad discipline, which keeps students’ career options open.

Management degrees could have a very practical focus, which is an opportunity for students to gain experience in the process of completing their degree before having started their professional careers. Management courses usually offer work placements and practical modules, which include business simulations and business creation in a simulated environment. Acquiring practical experience through these opportunities could make students stand out from the crowd in the job market once they graduate. Research-oriented Management degrees also exist for those who prefer the theoretical aspects of such a degree. Most courses, however, have established a good balance between theory and practice in order to meet the needs of all students.

Management degrees also prepare students to serve the managerial role across a wide range of areas, including HR management, hospitality management, innovation management, operations management, etc. Students can specialize in one particular area or focus on gaining knowledge across all of these areas thanks to the high availability of different management courses.

Additionally, there is a high demand for management professionals in the contemporary business world. Therefore, taking a management course is an opportunity for students to kick-start their careers and occupy a higher position in the organizational hierarchy.

management degree Structure

Management courses usually begin by introducing students to different areas covered by the managerial role, such as organizational management, business environment, statistics, accounting and finance, business growth, etc. After the first year, institutions allow students to explore the management discipline into more depth by delivering specialized modules and offering optional modules, which enable students to choose subjects that interest them the most and are most relevant to their career aspirations.

Management degrees take 3 years to complete in the UK. Interesting

Although I studied remotely (from Sri Lanka) the university supported me in the best possible way to interact. The tutors did their best in guiding with regard to the assignments and research. The portal was super useful. Overall, it was an interesting journey.

Great facilities but lacking in engagement

I like the facilities and recourses this uni provides , there are constant events going on and the student social life is great. Although, the learning modules itself are very dense in content and unclear. Its not very engaging, this could just be my course though. Overall , great uni but can improve in the business department.

    Lack of administrative support

Overall, the University takes great responsibility for offering the best education to its students. We’re given well-informed lecture notes and the teachers are very helpful and friendly. However, when it comes to getting help regarding the clash of classes and change of timetables, updating student data on the system or requesting financial aid for all student issues, the admin department takes its own time to solve matters and sometimes wholly ignores them. This is something I would like to address about the university.

    Useless

My programme MSc in Business with Management provides no specialisation whatsoever. You absolutely cannot land a good job in the field of management with this degree. The only solution is to upskill and get professional certifications.

    Excellent hands on learning

I was fortunate enough to attend uni with a group of engaged and fantastic lecturers and tutors. It was vitally important for my learning style to do this face to face in lectures and seminars to bounce off academics and fellow students. The course workload was not too heavy meaning I could explore and enjoy the topic without feeling overwhelmed and eventually graduated with a first-class in business management.

    Great exchange opportunities

Enjoyed the programme, enjoyed the university experience, the highlight was the exchange I did in my third year which opened a lot of doors for me. I also enjoyed getting to meet people from all over the world on campus.

Great faculty engagement and study abroad opportunities

Did the 4-year course with a 1-year study abroad.
The facilities at NU are great and it’s in the perfect location.
The business school and library were good along with the staff at them. Really engaged with the lecturers both inside and outside of class time.
Brilliant city to live in and really safe feel too.
Studying abroad was the highlight as met some great people, and got to experience different cultures and countries. Really helped me grow and stand out after graduation.
    Would definitely recommend NU.

    International Experience

I graduate in MSc Engineering Management from Northumbria University in 2019. I studied there for 2 years and every day I felt there was something new to learn or participate in the University. It is located in the city centre which is very advantageous as you are close to many shops, restaurants, cafes and whatnot.
Coming to the faculty – They are well trained, professional and diverse based on their backgrounds.
University facilities and the Student’s Union – University library is open 24hrs except on holidays and other important days. Staff are very friendly and they help you in career-related services by organising weekly sessions and open days. The student union was one of the best highlights of my uni life. They always organise events which are multi-cultural and have the best bar with affordable prices on drinks and food.
The student’s union is always at the forefront in solving the issue of the students and make sure everyone is receiving all the facilities required from the university.

I was working as Meet and Greet office for the International office of the University and now you can easily know why I said it is very international and diverse.

Accommodation- Northumbria has on-campus accommodation and some outside the campus areas. The accommodation prices vary and that gives you an option to choose within your price range.

    Learning methods

I went to Northumbria Business School as an exchange student. The courses were very interesting and they provided extra english classes to the foreign students which have helped us to improve our academic writing. The evaluation method is based on the class participation as well as on the assignment delivered at the end of the course.
