What is a Management degree?

A Management degree builds a strong foundation in a wide variety of fields including business, finance, economics and marketing. It develops students’ understanding of business practices, structures, business theory, business strategy and research as well as global economies and financial markets. Doing a Management Degree also allows students to gain skills that enable them to work with financial and numerical data effectively.

Management degrees cover different managerial roles, such as Human Resource (HR) management, hospitality management, innovation management, operations management, etc. They can be specialized into one of the areas mentioned above or follow a more general approach that covers most of these areas.

The range of management degrees is huge and includes Business Management, Management, Marketing Management, etc. They are predominantly offered in the business departments/business schools/management schools of different universities.

Benefits of a Management degree

One of the main benefits of this degree is that Management is a broad discipline, which keeps students’ career options open.

Management degrees could have a very practical focus, which is an opportunity for students to gain experience in the process of completing their degree before having started their professional careers. Management courses usually offer work placements and practical modules, which include business simulations and business creation in a simulated environment. Acquiring practical experience through these opportunities could make students stand out from the crowd in the job market once they graduate. Research-oriented Management degrees also exist for those who prefer the theoretical aspects of such a degree. Most courses, however, have established a good balance between theory and practice in order to meet the needs of all students.

Management degrees also prepare students to serve the managerial role across a wide range of areas, including HR management, hospitality management, innovation management, operations management, etc. Students can specialize in one particular area or focus on gaining knowledge across all of these areas thanks to the high availability of different management courses.

Additionally, there is a high demand for management professionals in the contemporary business world. Therefore, taking a management course is an opportunity for students to kick-start their careers and occupy a higher position in the organizational hierarchy.

management degree Structure

Management courses usually begin by introducing students to different areas covered by the managerial role, such as organizational management, business environment, statistics, accounting and finance, business growth, etc. After the first year, institutions allow students to explore the management discipline into more depth by delivering specialized modules and offering optional modules, which enable students to choose subjects that interest them the most and are most relevant to their career aspirations.

Management degrees take 3 years to complete in the UK. However, their duration could extend to 4 years if students choose to spend a year in industry between their second and third year, which is a popular option among the student community. Amazing

Since joining back in September 2022, it has been nothing but enjoyment. Being surrounded by a friendly environment. Lecturers always eager to help and teach their students more, and the student i’ve seen are always pushing themselves. I have no bad opinions about QMUL so far!

    Great teaching assistance at QMUL

Having studied at Greenwich for my undergraduate, I eagerly wanted to study at Queen Mary university of London not only its one of the leading universities in London but also has a strong reputation internationally. The location was also an important factor for choosing QMUL. I am glad to say that I wasn’t disappointed. Majority of the professors were helpful in explaining the tasks and assignments. Due to ongoing Coronavirus I would email some professors for assistance, there were delayed replies or no reply at all, which was frustrating. Overall it was a good experience and would recommend QMUL to other students.

    Business and Management

I like the program I have chosen and the modules. As a second-year student, I have the opportunity to choose 5 modules out of 8 which is great. I like the teaching methods and the variety of assessments, group presentations, mid-term tests, and final essays… Everything is well explained if you pay attention and the QMUL Plus is a great platform to find every information needed.
The only con is the location of the campus and the looks of it. The location is not safe.

Jack of all trades but master of none.

Although I only completed my first year, my review thus far is the following:

This course can be too general, especially in year one you learn the basics of several fields of business.

Essentially there are tons of subjects to pick from, you will develop a wide range of introductory knowledge in many fields.
However, you do no go in depth in any of those fields and I am afraid that employability wise employeers would not know what exactly to do with you. Do not expect to find a work as a manager straight after graduating.

This course can be too general and I highly suggest that you take the opportunity in year 2 to focus on specialising in a field of business that you liked in year one.

Do not continue to explore too many new subjects, start specialising. Pick modules where you can build on from year one (unless you did not like any of them). If you liked marketing in year one, select marketing related modules in year 2 in order to go more in depth.
Generally speaking the first year was easy. Do go for a postgraduate degree if possible to specialise in field of business. Do not expect to lead a business straight after graduation.

    Amazing Learning and Exposure

It was a great university. The learning exposure was very high due to the diverse nationalities of the students in a program. The course material was very good as it provided many different case studies of companies internationally.
