I respect Fort Hare’s historic legacy as a cradle of African leadership and intellectual thought, having educated many prominent figures in South African and continental history. However, the recent violent unrest where students set fire to key buildings and caused massive damage is deeply concerning and a serious setback for the institution’s mission and reputation. Given this context, I would only recommend Fort Hare with caution right now. Some lecturers are deeply committed and knowledgeable, especially in humanities and education, and they encourage critical thinking rooted in African perspectives. Campus life can feel vibrant during stable periods.
