What is a Management degree?

A Management degree builds a strong foundation in a wide variety of fields including business, finance, economics and marketing. It develops students’ understanding of business practices, structures, business theory, business strategy and research as well as global economies and financial markets. Doing a Management Degree also allows students to gain skills that enable them to work with financial and numerical data effectively.

Management degrees cover different managerial roles, such as Human Resource (HR) management, hospitality management, innovation management, operations management, etc. They can be specialized into one of the areas mentioned above or follow a more general approach that covers most of these areas.

The range of management degrees is huge and includes Business Management, Management, Marketing Management, etc. They are predominantly offered in the business departments/business schools/management schools of different universities.

Benefits of a Management degree

One of the main benefits of this degree is that Management is a broad discipline, which keeps students’ career options open.

Management degrees could have a very practical focus, which is an opportunity for students to gain experience in the process of completing their degree before having started their professional careers. Management courses usually offer work placements and practical modules, which include business simulations and business creation in a simulated environment. Acquiring practical experience through these opportunities could make students stand out from the crowd in the job market once they graduate. Research-oriented Management degrees also exist for those who prefer the theoretical aspects of such a degree. Most courses, however, have established a good balance between theory and practice in order to meet the needs of all students.

Management degrees also prepare students to serve the managerial role across a wide range of areas, including HR management, hospitality management, innovation management, operations management, etc. Students can specialize in one particular area or focus on gaining knowledge across all of these areas thanks to the high availability of different management courses.

Additionally, there is a high demand for management professionals in the contemporary business world. Therefore, taking a management course is an opportunity for students to kick-start their careers and occupy a higher position in the organizational hierarchy.

management degree Structure

Management courses usually begin by introducing students to different areas covered by the managerial role, such as organizational management, business environment, statistics, accounting and finance, business growth, etc. After the first year, institutions allow students to explore the management discipline into more depth by delivering specialized modules and offering optional modules, which enable students to choose subjects that interest them the most and are most relevant to their career aspirations.

The research facilities were on par, it is an acceptable academic institution. I learned a considerable amount about the administration side of businesses. My business project was focused on the sustainability of small to.medium sized businesses in southern Africa.

    In need of some restoration

The University of Johannesburg is a massive organization, which means that communication can be slow and tedious, especially with administration departments. The communication platforms used are also not the most user-friendly.

The infrastructure is also quite old and a lot of the university is visibly dated and under-maintained. (I study logistics within the business block).

The course I am currently studying is a bridging course into an advanced diploma. While most of the lecturers are good with their communication, their teaching styles can be rather difficult to keep up with or boring as most of them are not academics but industry experts.

    University of uj experience

I would highly recommend this university mainly because of its hunger and strive in providing quality education to students. University of Johannesburg is now ranked number 3 in the country. This is because of its drive when it comes to the fourth industrial revolution. UJ has proven to its student that not even a pandemic could stop them from reaching out to students during difficult times of COVID-19 as they distributed data bundles to their student to continue learning online. This was for their studies to not lack behind. I would highly recommend this institution to any international or national students as it would give them an excellent varsity experience.

    Logistics Management Course

Logistics has not necessarily been a challenge thus far, but rather the brain pick. With the correct time managent, it is actually enjoable. I have learnt a diversity of what logistics can be broken up to, which I found insightful.

With regards to being a UJ student, the right company will make the experience better. University can become lonely and nerve wrecking when tend to leave quickly after your lectures. UJ is a good university when you remember why you’re there.

A healthy blend of theory and practical knowledge

My 3 years in undergrad could simply be described as wholesome. The faculty divisions across the 4 campuses meant most of the people you interact with are in a similar field of study. I had the privilege of taking a few classes with lectures who took the time to be personally invested in our growth, progress and future prospects. Often we would engage in conversations about how they navigated being graduates, trying to find their feet and how they followed their passions to eventually find themselves in academia.

I also particularly enjoyed the concept of student societies on campus. Culture, religion, nationality, sport or even food, there was a society for just about anything that can tickle your fancy. They were fully supported and funded by the university, ensuring every student no matter where they are from could feel at home. I was even President of one for 2 years.

I did not much like the student accommodations, however, particularly the ones on campus. They did have a beautiful sense of sisterhood and togetherness that I enjoyed, but I always felt they were severely overpriced, too small for comfort and had way too many rules considering only adults lived there.

Overall I enjoyed my UJ experience so much that I decided to do my postgraduate studies there too.
