    Great professors, bad facilities

Overall a well organized university with some amazing professors. Facility wise not great, especially at my department (electrical and computer engineering), but everyone gives his best in order to do the job with the very best way. Campus wise, there are so many things to do that you never get bored.

Amazing by greek standards, still way to go

Aristotle University of Thessaloniki is one of the biggest universities in Greece, located in the second biggest greek city, Thessaloniki. I’ll try to be brief:
    – Academically, the University offers high quality education in a great variety of subjects. The professors are highly cited researchers and there are great opportunities for learning
    – However, the economic crisis has its clear effects on the University, with old, not cared for buildings with dysfunctional chairs, projectors and lights being the standard. The laboratory equipment is old as well, though it works for what it’s supposed to.
    – There is a very active student community which is organised in various teams, local and international, and there’s always some type of event being organised which offers opportunities for growth but also having fun
    – The professors, as everywhere, can be hit or miss. Some will guide you and help you and make you feel interested, others will be cold and distant and mean and have you regret the moment you stepped into their class to begin with
    – Overall, there is an air of fresh opportunity in AUTh, constantly stifled by the financial, structural and logistical struggles, but somehow always supported by the University’s students and professors’ own energy and passion.

Great Greek University - Still A Long Way To Go

The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki is one of the biggest universities in Greece, having the biggest campus (I believe) in the country and being located in one of the most active student cities. It is not without its drawbacks: The buildings are either ancient or underdeveloped, as is the studetn cafeteria and student housing. The classrooms, which sometimes are not big enough to house all the students, are falling apart (quite literally), and the lab equipment is of the previous century an alarming amount of times. The bachelor programs are criminally overlooked in comparison to the masters and few and rare are the professors who actually care to make their subject interesting. The general idea, unfortunately, is that all the information is there, somewhere, and the students are the ones who need to work their way through all the information and turn it into knowledge, with little to no guidance from anyone other than their fellow classmates. It’s not all doom and gloom though. The bright side: the level of education is truly impressive, with a great range of both bachelor and master degrees that hold great power on both a national and international level. The univeristy offers a lot of opportunities to its students (though as mentioned they need to look for them themselves), like student groups, European Exchange Programs, International Workshops and Competitions and many more, that students can use to develop their skills and gather experience. The few professors that care for their students and are active in the student communities truly do help them reach their highest potential. It is largly in part to those student communities that I consider this university to be good. The campus is also really close to the city centre and is relatively safe to walk through. All in all, in Greek standards AUTh is one of the greatest univesities, but it still has a long way to go before it can offer an exquisite, enviable academic experience, despite its efforts and potential.

A good University, improvements can be made

In general I would say that my university is good in terms of courses. I study Electrical and Computer Engineering and I think that both topics are covered adequately. The labs and their equipment, for those that I have attended so far are quite ok.

What I don’t like is the pretty bad professor: student ratio. Sometimes if you are not early for class you are not able to find a place to seat. There is little to no personal relationship with your professors.

Great program but the facilities are not up to date!

Great program overall, but the facilities and the accommodation are in very bad condition. Most of the professors are willing to help and take the learning process a step further. Also, the lab facilities are a little old-fashioned.

    Plenty of room for improvement.

I’m currently in my second year of study in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Programme and have taken 3/4 of my semesters online. For my review, I will focus on my school’s efficiency and ability to maintain the quality of the classes during the pandemic, especially during the past semester.
First and foremost, almost no actions have been taken to allow the students to gain in-lab experience, and there is no sight of doing so, which is quite demotivating and discouraging for young engineers.
Professors have been trying to keep up, however, no real alterations have been applied to neither the course’s syllabus nor the examination methods to make them remote-learning friendly, causing a significant amount of students to either fail a class or pass it without having actually gained knowledge and experience.
Additionally, there have been significant differences between the Student Body and the Administration, causing the latter to adopt questionable, even violent tactics towards the first in order to “restore order” in a very closed campus.
The reason why I’m choosing to focus on the hardships we’ve had to face during the pandemic is that I believe it’s important to have an indicator of an institution’s ability to adjust to various conditions, as flexibility and concurrency become increasingly important for any type of organization that needs to stay up-to-date, especially a university.
Finishing, I’d like to point out that this hasn’t always been the case, as during the first live semester professors were highly motivating, and the university, in general, was thriving, despite the problems with the Administration, that has always been and always will be there. If you’re thinking about attending an AUTh course, definitely wait until the measures have loosened enough to allow for universities to reopen.

It is a great university. I like studying at it and I like the professors a lot. I recommend it to others because you have to discover knowledge yourself and that makes you a real engineer. It prepares you for real-life where things are not easy.

    The quality of the lectures

The level of the university teachers and classes in general is quite high. There are multiple activities and possibilities except for the lectures and in total, the experience to be in this university is great!

    AUTH Teams

Aristotle University of Thessaloniki needs improvements to its facilities , hiring more staff to support the academic manpower and to update its equipment at its science labs. Also it needs to get rid of bureaucracy because it makes delays in many cases. One of its best characheristics is the variety of active student teams that make bonds between different departments and make it more famous. Some of those teams are EESTEC, Aristurtle and IEEE.With their contribution our university gains prestige in international level.
