It is actually hard, but it's worth it

UChicago can be very frustrating at times, be it because of the insane amount of business bros (who will make you wonder if you should join GS every other day) or because of the torturous math classes, but I see way too many upsides to it. UChicago is challenging–in the way I’d like to think that anyone who got in would enjoy it; the core curriculum is insanely interesting (I took humanities, social sciences and physics with amazing professors) and the exit opportunities are just great. However, these things tend to class with each other frequently. You cannot take challenging classes if you want a GPA that will get you into a hedge fund, and you cannot want a hedge fund job if you are trying to get a bio phd, and in either case you probably cannot take the interesting classes on Aristotle or Camus, because you always need to think about fulfilling your requirements, and the core, and your econ major, and your pre-med track. It will make you take many hard decisions and read a lot and do a lot of pets–but if you think that this is the type of struggle that makes you grow and know yourself better, go for it! I will warn, there was an unexpected amount of business culture around and a super high dependency on frat parties for freshmen, which I couldn’t judge from the “quirky university” branding, and you will probably feel sad after spending too many hours in the reg and getting a bad grade in winter quarter. But I think I take a lot of fulfilling lessons from these challenges.

    Strong tech programs

The University of Chicago surprised me with how strong its tech resources and opportunities are. While it’s famous for economics and social sciences, the school is also investing heavily in technology, data science, and innovation. The courses are challenging but very hands-on, and there are plenty of resources and research opportunities for students interested in applying tech to real-world problems. What I like most is how interdisciplinary it feels; you can study computer science while also connecting it to fields like business, policy, or even the sciences. For anyone looking at tech with a broader impact, UChicago is a great place to be.

    UChicago: More than just academics

The University of Chicago is a place that truly challenges you to think in new ways. The academics are demanding, but the professors are dedicated and encourage real critical thinking instead of just memorization. What I appreciate most is the culture of discussion; students are genuinely curious and love diving deep into ideas both inside and outside the classroom. It’s definitely rigorous, but if you enjoy learning and want to be surrounded by motivated people, UChicago offers an experience that’s worth it.

    Great University

I would recommend UChicago; it is an incredible place if you are focused on receiving a rigorous and interesting education. Socially, it it better than its reputation ‘where fun goes to die.’ It is in a dangerous area, but there’s a large police force.
