What Is an Economics Degree?

Are you passionate about the business and finance sector? Do you follow the national and international news? Then, an Economics degree is the answer. It has always been one of the most sought-after degrees amongst youth.

Economics degrees are designed to tackle all the issues that have an impact on financial situations, ranging from production to how resources are used. Candidates are trained to understand how the economy suffers fluctuations based on the market’s needs and wants followed by the market’s supply and demand.

By far one of the most crucial elements is that economics is divided into microeconomics and macroeconomic. Microeconomics deals with the economic behaviour at an individual level (companies, buyers, sellers and others), whilst macroeconomics illustrates the bigger picture, on a national or global scale (unemployment, economic growth, inflation and so on).

Benefits of an Economics Degree

Having an economics degree increases anyone’s chances to find a job, regardless of the field. This is mainly due to the fact that graduates hold many transferable abilities, such as analytical and problem-solving skills, that are suitable for any career.

A study made by the London School of Economics and Political Science showed that graduates from an economics course have a starting salary of £33,000 per year. Having a job in the field right after graduation is a major positive aspect and comes with a lot of opportunities for career advancement.

Economics Degree Structure

Economics degrees are usually a three years commitment and sometimes are offered as part of a joint degree. This means that Economics can be studied along with another subject such as engineering, management, law, computer science and others.

This degree can be found either as a Bachelor of Science (BSc) or Bachelor of Arts (BA). The BSc focuses more on economical theory and statistical techniques, while BA is combined with social sciences and qualitative modules.

Swarthmore College (One of US’s Elite Colleges)

    Swat

Swarthmore is a small liberal arts college in Pennsylvania, US. Swarthmore has a small size of student body, and a small community of faculty. It has a very unique location as it is located just thirty minutes away from Philadelphia city, one of the historic and most known cities in the US. It is also located in a small village that has its own community of residents, grocery stores, restaurants, and even a barber shop. The education at Swarthmore is top notch with a diverse range of classes in all disciplines, a plethora of very talented professors who graduated from top universities such as Harvard, Princeton, Stanford with PhDs, and many resources that students can tap into such as office hours, TA clinics, and mentoring opportunities. The admission process is very competitive (6% acceptance rate), and hard working, special, motivated, talented students are chosen accordingly. The culture of the college values diversity, inclusion, and cooperation. Students here are extremely driven, yet there is no competitiveness go be found among the students, but, actually, there is a sense of cooperation that sets Swarthmore’s student body aside from that of other colleges. The food here is notoriously known for it’s mediocre quality; however, there are many dishes offered (meat and vegan based), and there are many dinning options on campus, including Sharples, Essie Maize, Science Center Cafeteria, and Kolberg Cafeteria. There is also a late night cafeteria run by students called Crum Cafe, and it is a place for people to hangout, study, and chill while eating decent food prepared by students. Also, the new Sharples cafeteria is opening this year, which is spacious and said to have better quality dishes. All and all, Swarthmore is a very unique college that deserves your attention . Let’s not forget that it has one of the highest rates of graduates who won the noble prize for science and who go into the highest paid jobs in America.

Great Academics, Beautiful Campus, C-level social scene

Swarthmore College is definitely great for one to engage in different academic pursuits. The professors are always available to help the students both during their office and personal hours. Developing camaraderie with the different instructors is definitely a highlighted point of the school. Additionally, Swarthmore is a beautiful arboretum right next to the woods through which you can take walks during the spring and fall. There is lots of open space for you to explore. The college also has numerous resources such as the Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership and the Lang Center for Civic and Social development amongst others through which students can essentially pursue passion projects. However, on the social scene, the school is a bit quirky and weird, It is definitely very left-leaning and will sometimes leave you feeling isolated for your unpopular opinions and behaviours. Play this carefully though and I think this college will be a perfect fit for you.
