After spending some time and graduating from Belmont University, although it wasnt always smooth sailing, I did have an overwhelmingly positive experience in a variety of ways. Firstly I would like to mention that I was a transfer student from another school and was nervous about “starting school over again”. Im glad to tell that this fear was quickly diminished as soon as I met Belmont staff and was coordinated with certain directors. They take a much more personable and humanized approach at assessing what your looking to receive from their resources. The process of deciding your “future” at a young age is stressful decision and the staff knows this so they keep a close personal relationship for those that require extra support. Most if not all classes outside of major requiremnets are also reletively small so that this student teacher relationship remains paramount – I especially found this useful as school work can feel overwhelming at times. Campus life was another huge bonus for me during my time there as it fostered an incredible community that allowed me to build a new life.

All of my professors were fair-minded, and the university has a very positive and welcoming atmosphere overall. As an African American and a member of the Black Student Association, I do think that the university could benefit from more diversity efforts when it comes to recruitment and programming. The school has a Christian focus, but I never felt like any of the worship events or sermons reflected my experiences growing up in the black church, so I had trouble connecting in this area. I would have appreciated more guest speakers of color and the incorporation of gospel music in the worship sessions. Similarly, within my major of songwriting, there was a focus on country and pop music, but I can’t recall a time when we analyzed a song that wasn’t performed by a white artist. I feel like the curriculum could benefit from more variety in terms of genre, so it is more reflective of the music industry overall. I also double majored in audio and video production, and I feel like students within this major should have more access to the audio engineering courses and the studio reservations, which were solely reserved for audio engineering and technology students.

Although covid conflicted with a lot of my learning and social life the last two years. But the professors and classmates made the best out of it and I was able to have an amazing experience, leaving with good friends and a nice portfolio.
