Throughout my time at Belmont, I never had a negative experience with another student or staff member. All of my professors were fair-minded, and the university has a very positive and welcoming atmosphere overall. As an African American and a member of the Black Student Association, I do think that the university could benefit from more diversity efforts when it comes to recruitment and programming. The school has a Christian focus, but I never felt like any of the worship events or sermons reflected my experiences growing up in the black church, so I had trouble connecting in this area. I would have appreciated more guest speakers of color and the incorporation of gospel music in the worship sessions. Similarly, within my major of songwriting, there was a focus on country and pop music, but I can’t recall a time when we analyzed a song that wasn’t performed by a white artist. I feel like the curriculum could benefit from more variety in terms of genre, so it is more reflective of the music industry overall. I also double majored in audio and video production, and I feel like students within this major should have more access to the audio engineering courses and the studio reservations, which were solely reserved for audio engineering and technology students.
