In my first year at the university, I stayed in Polwarth House; the lowest-priced accommodation building available, at £88 per week.
I shared a thin hallway, one bathroom and an extra shower room, and a small kitchen with three other students. There was no common room, although the kitchen was enough for all of us to comfortably hang out in.
The bedroom was spacious; containing a 3/4 bed and a desk that stretched from the medium-sized wardrobe to the wall. There were more than enough plug sockets, and plenty of space to fit my drying rack and guitar. The sink area was small, but I could always use the one in the shared bathroom if I needed a bigger area. Compared with other similarly-priced accommodations’ bedrooms, I feel like I got my money’s worth out of it.
Everyone in the building was very sociable and friendly, and it was easy to get to my friends’ flats from my own. Most of my close friendships were made at flat parties in Polwarth. It is worth saying that it can get pretty noisy on the weekends – and the noise can carry – but any issues can be sorted out by phoning campus security. I found that a good pair of noise-cancelling earbuds was enough.
If you are a student looking to save money, and don’t mind the occasional party above you, I can’t recommend Polwarth enough.
View moreMy experience was average. I found the lecturers good and engaging but there was little to no information on the application of the subject to the real world. The course was, thus, very uninspiring and lost in the university world.
View moreHow practical lecturer compare the law to everyday instances. For the French side of the subject you get to delve deeper into specific time periods from French history, as well as modern day France. It’s almost as if you are (somewhat) integrating into society from the “comfort” of your host/home country
View moreI had a decent experience at the University of Stirling. Academically lecturers were generally supportive and willing to help. The campus is great although it was in construction for most of my time there. The city is very student friendly and not too expensive and is very much a Uni city. A negative would be the sports teams where there was a lack of professionalism and care unless it was the top teams that would represent the university such as sports scholars.
View moreI think the pros of this school is their facilities are diversity to students and the good environment. There are many sport facilities to us such as football court, gym centre or indoor basketball court. They will encourage students to join more sport or other activities. I can join or book the sport session for free since I am the member in here. The sport session is included some student in different year course.
View moreThe university has a diverse student pool . As an economics student I have met peers from America, Saudi Arabia, Cyprus, Malaysia , France, and many other countries. In general the university encourages diversity and the different backgrounds have helped me gain a better insight about how different societies work. The campus offers many different facilities , from entertainment (cinema) to food ,coffee, exercise etc. They could be updated or better maintained but I would still encourage students to get familiar with and make use of what the campus has to offer.
View moreFor the course itself, I had a fabulous time. Although shifting my major from geography to finance was challenging, I am grateful that Stirling accepted me as a student and provided me with the opportunity to pursue this new area of interest. From the very first day of classes, I was warned that this course would require significant time invested in preparation. Having lecturers that were willing to assist me was indeed a plus. It was difficult for me to go through the course as a student with almost no prior experience in the field of finance and investments; nevertheless, every teacher was really helpful in answering our questions and guiding us through the material presented in the seminars. When I was a freshman in college, I remember i was panicking because I didn’t understand the material and everyone else around me appeared to. It was the for financial reporting module. after that I confronted my professor and let him know I was having a hard time. I told him I was lost and concerned that I wouldn’t do well enough in his module. “We’ll get through this” he reassured me, “so relax”. He even offered his office as a place for me to work on sample exam questions. I will never forget his incredible generosity and genuine concern for myself and my fellow students.
The enrollment in investment analysis was low, with only a few students exceeding that number. Teachers will be able to identify us more easily, and was able to assist us better. We were a pretty exclusive group, so I appreciate that they could recognise us right away.
However, I only rated it at 4 stars because, having completed the course, I find it to be largely theoretical. Although I appreciate that this is a CFA-affiliated course, which implies that it was developed by CFA and is prepared in accordance with CFA’s standards (which is fantastic), I feel that I would benefit from additional hands-on experience applying the concepts we’ve covered in class.
Apart from that, I’ve had a fantastic trip overall. I’m happy with my decision to study at Stirling since I was able to connect with fascinating people from all around the world.
View moreAs an international student, coming to Scotland completely changed the way I look at education. The years I have spent at Stirling taught me the importance of interdisciplinary subjects and their use in higher education and workplaces. The only thing I would try to improve is the connection of the students with the faculty, I believe that better communication is needed in that place.
