A degree designed to suit you!

Newcastle University is one of the few universities in England that offer a Combined Honours degree. It allows you to combine 2 or 3 different subjects from different disciplines. Being in my final year, I can say that this has been an amazing opportunity to pursue my various interests in an interdisciplinary manner.

In the first year, each student is being allocated with a Peer Mentor and a Personal Tutor to ensure that everyone receives as much support as needed. Additionally, there are numerous resources available that greatly improve the whole university experience. There are various societies to join, interesting activities taking place on campus throughout the year and many volunteering opportunities!

Newcastle upon Tyne is a relatively affordable city and there are many accommodation options depending on one’s budget. At the same time, most of the places a student might be visiting on a regular basis are within a walking distance. Another great benefit of living in Newcastle is definitely its night life – a promise of many nights danced away.

The university also offers many study and work placement opportunities, especially for Modern Languages students who get to spend a whole academic year abroad in the country where their target language is being spoken.

Overall, I feel like Newcastle University is an inclusive and welcoming environment with various opportunities to pursue different (academic) interests and there are many structures in place to ensure that the experience you get while studing there is a really rewarding one.

    Combined Honours at NCL

The course is really interesting because it allows a lot of flexibility compared to most uni courses, I chose the major-minor route with politics and business as my subjects. The teaching staff in the politics department are all amazing, the business school could be better in that area though. I’d definitely recommend the uni overall, there’s a decent mix of in-person and online content delivery which makes it easier to have a balanced and quite flexible schedule. The city’s incredibly lively and fun, definitely makes for a very memorable time.

The variety of courses I can choose

I love my teachers because they are very dedicated, and the facilities are great too. Although, because of the poor management of contracts and contracting situation of the staff of the Modern Languages School, there’s a little range when it comes to year modules. The university should pay its teachers and researchers properly!!

Combined Honours at Newcastle University is an Amazing Degree Programme!

I am a Combined Honours: Education, History and Japanese student at Newcastle University. The Combined Honours Programme at Newcastle University is fantastic. The staff is very friendly and always ready to help if you encounter any issues. Since Combined Honours is composed of students with different subject combinations, it is very diverse and certainly an interesting and fun environment to be in!

At the start of of the degree we were given the option to study modules from two or three courses at the University. I chose Education, History and Japanese. The course enabled me to learn skills in three different areas and combine them in ways I haven’t imagined before. History has been particularly useful in helping me deepen my understanding of Japanese history and culture. The Japanese language classes have helped me significantly improve my Japanese. I used to be a beginner and now I can hold everyday conversations and understand academic language. Education has taught me how educational institutions work. I also learned a lot about educational psychology. We discussed all kinds of interesting issues in class.

I have learned a range of valuable skills throughout my degree and I am sure these will be useful in the future! I highly recommend this course!

    Variety of extra-curricular opportunities.

Newcastle University has provided me with the opportunity to better myself academically and personally. Thanks to the plethora of extra-curricular opportunities available, students can get involved in sports clubs, student representation, course/school societies, language learning… and many more! I would highly recommend my course to prospective students as there is a lot of flexibility to tailor your studies to your preferences. The university is located near the city centre, with easy access to amenities and proximity to the local community, something which I really value! The support systems in place offer help to students in any situation, whether that be with financial aid, mental health/counselling support, accommodation advice or other issues that affect students every year!
