Primarily, the University of Glasgow has the most beautiful campus in all of the options for Scottish universities. Its large gothic centre piece playing a key role in persuading the upcoming students to chose it. However, as a student originating from Glasgow, most of the students were from abroad or some from maybe a ‘higher’ class than I was from, so would sometimes come across as more ‘snobby’ in some cases. Aside from this, having the experience of meeting such a large variety of different people from diverse backgrounds allowed me to grow and understand the world more than just my little bubble in Scotland, so I would recommend trying to make conversations with the people in your lectures and seminars, as you could find some similarities you might not have found otherwise. English Literature as a course has been excellent, with its mix of professors with different outlooks on each novel- all of which I have enjoyed thoroughly, as I feel like there was a good splash of genres included from Frankenstein to Giovannis Room. I would highly recommend studying English literature here.
View moreI really enjoyed studying English Literature at the University of Glasgow. I personally found the third and fourth years the most enjoyable due to the course selection available. Options such as: Children’s Literature, Victorian Literature, Fantasy and Realism, Romanticism and Revolution, where all courses I really enjoyed and each covered a wide range of literature from their prospective periods. I found the mandatory courses, were also beneficial in allowing me to further develop my critical and theoretical understanding of texts. The compulsory set texts throughout the 4 years were also very diverse and supplemented one another well in terms of comparative essay work. Overall I really enjoyed this course and its teachings.
View moreIt’s in my home city, offers a wide range of courses and is high ranking: a great university. The student experience in the city is, under the right circumstances, unrivalled and this is matched often by the quality of teaching.
