What Is an Economics Degree?

Are you passionate about the business and finance sector? Do you follow the national and international news? Then, an Economics degree is the answer. It has always been one of the most sought-after degrees amongst youth.

Economics degrees are designed to tackle all the issues that have an impact on financial situations, ranging from production to how resources are used. Candidates are trained to understand how the economy suffers fluctuations based on the market’s needs and wants followed by the market’s supply and demand.

By far one of the most crucial elements is that economics is divided into microeconomics and macroeconomic. Microeconomics deals with the economic behaviour at an individual level (companies, buyers, sellers and others), whilst macroeconomics illustrates the bigger picture, on a national or global scale (unemployment, economic growth, inflation and so on).

Benefits of an Economics Degree

Having an economics degree increases anyone’s chances to find a job, regardless of the field. This is mainly due to the fact that graduates hold many transferable abilities, such as analytical and problem-solving skills, that are suitable for any career.

A study made by the London School of Economics and Political Science showed that graduates from an economics course have a starting salary of £33,000 per year. Having a job in the field right after graduation is a major positive aspect and comes with a lot of opportunities for career advancement.

Economics Degree Structure

Economics degrees are usually a three years commitment and sometimes are offered as part of a joint degree. This means that Economics can be studied along with another subject such as engineering, management, law, computer science and others.

This degree can be found either as a Bachelor of Science (BSc) or Bachelor of Arts (BA). The BSc focuses more on economical theory and statistical techniques, while BA is combined with social sciences and qualitative modules.

    Economics Course

Pretty badly organized for first year students and a very high failing rate as you can only fail 2 out of 12 classes, which is pretty outrageous as in an exam you need per example a 27/40 to pass the class.
Problem based learning seemed exciting but it was a totally disappointing learning method for most of the classes like qm1, qm2 and more. 8 year suspension from tje uni is also outrageous. Pick your study with careful consideration

I have been accepted to UM and everyone says how difficult it is there and the workload. Currently I am doing IB2 and I am worried about the next year and if I should go to somewhere else for my undergraduate degree

I’ve always had a hard time remaining focused in class. I have a tendency to engage in many extracurriculars, so I was always exhausted and falling asleep in class. UCM has been absolutely amazing in this regard: the classes are super interesting, students have a lot of freedom to choose their courses, and there are always kind faces around to share conversations with! PBL is extremely engaging in my opinion and really grounds the task studied into real-life applications.

UCM was by far the best academic decision I have ever made

The University College Maastricht (UCM), a particularly high workload, open curriculum bachelor’s course at Maastricht University was by far the best academic decision I have ever made. The class sizes are very small which means you get lots of personal interaction with the world-leading professors. The method of teaching at Maastricht University is Problem-based-learning, this is particularly beneficial for the courses available at UCM as it leads to in-depth and fruitful conversations about the curriculum materials, which in turn leads to a deeper and more interdisciplinary understanding. This course has led me to discover where exactly my place in this world is and how to address problems from a truly multi-disciplinary way, analysing each element of a problem and finding the best possible solution and way forward. I thank UCM not only for the eye-opening experiences and opportunities that it gave me, but for the way it helped in shaping me into the person that I am today. I cannot recommend enough.
