What is a Communications degree?

Communications is a universal degree, which explores the traditional forms of communication such as verbal, physical, visual and written communication but also extends beyond that to cover mass communication and social media. There are different types of communications degrees depending on the degree level.

Overall, Communications focuses on teaching effective communication through social media, web, print, mass media and verbal communication. However, there are two types of Communications degrees that exist. For instance, a Bachelor of Arts in Communications in the US is focused on preparing students for careers that are connected to writing, marketing, promotions, journalism and public relations. In contrast, Bachelor of Science in Communications is dedicated to the technology used in the science behind modern communication and prepares students for careers in production or sound engineering.

A Communications degree teaches students about how media and communication influences cultures, societies and people’s identities. It involves a significant amount of critical writing and research and covers different disciplines such as journalism, public relations, entertainment production, marketing, event planning and so many more disciplines, which are somehow connected to exchanging information and conveying messages. There are also different specialization options associated with this degree, including political communication, mass media, journalism, health communication, etc.

It is worth noting that a Communications degree has many intersection points with psychology, sociology, linguistics and in some cases politics.

Benefits of a Communications degree

The main benefit of a Communications degree is its universal nature. It applies to almost any subject or professional setting. For example, some of the top careers in the field of Communications include announcers, art directors, editors, broadcast and sound engineering technicians, reporters, correspondents, broadcast analysts, technical writers, writers and authors, interpreters, translators, etc. Therefore, it keeps students’ career options open and doesn’t require them to have a predetermined career path that they want to follow.

Communications degrees prepare students to make an impact from the start of their careers unlike other degrees, which require further training. This is possible thanks to the multitude of professionally accredited degrees in Communications, which develop students’ abilities based on the established standards in the field. Moreover, there are many Communications courses, which offer work placement opportunities that enable students to gain the required professional skills before they have even started their career.

Another benefit associated with Communications degrees is the fact that they develop students’ written and verbal communication skills significantly.

A major advantage of Communications over other degrees is that in most cases there are no prerequisites required to study Communications.

Communications degree structure

The duration of a Communications degree varies depending on the country and degree level. For example, Higher Education Institutions in the UK offer 3-year Bachelor’s courses. In some cases, the course may extend to four years if students are given the opportunity to spend a year abroad or in industry between the second and third year through a sandwich course. Bachelor’s degrees in Communications in the US usually take around four years to complete.

Over the duration of a Bachelor’s Communications degree, students are expected to learn and be able to apply the established communications theories by developing the technical skills required to work in a professional setting. In the first year of their studies, students learn predominantly how media and communication influences cultures, societies and people’s identities. Optional modules may introduce them to professional communication, journalism, documentary, film-making, marketing, etc. In addition to the introductory topics, this degree allows students to learn about more complex areas of communications such as interpersonal relations, brand management and linguistics at a later stage. For instance, the second and third years enable students to get a deeper understanding of theoretical concepts related to media and culture and develop practical skills in research and communications. Additionally, students may have the opportunity to take optional modules and pursue their interests in different areas related to Communications such as gender, race, youth, culture, digital media, political communication, public relations, etc.

The most common duration of a Master’s degree in Communications is between 1 and 2 years depending on the mode of study (full-time or part-time) and country.

PhD and MPhil degrees in Communications require students to dedicate anywhere between 3 and 6 years to their studies depending on the mode and country of study.

    Study in an Innovative way

Coming from an Eastern European country, studying in the Netherlands at Hanze UAS is a great experience. My school uses the method of practical teaching, which I like very much. We learn by doing things, and I don’t feel like I’m wasting my time writing assignments, but they all add to me. Having skills based classes, really helped us get to know the technical processes.

The master’s program is highly intense and challenging, so for people seeking to hop on new adventures, it’s an amazing opportunity. You get to work in a culturally diverse environment while learning various communication spectrums from corporate to crisis management.

    My experience

I am a first year International Communications student at Hanze University of Applied Sciences, and so far i’ve enjoyed most parts of what the programme has to offer. We study theory, but then put it in a practical matter with the projects we have to do throughout the semesters, which makes it easier to understand. There is also a creative aspect to the programme that lets us work with the Adobe packet which is (most of the time) a fun experience.
The campus is new and pretty big, with many places to just sit down and relax, or study. There are a few cafes inside the buildings where you can get food and something to drink. If you like to be more involved with the students and the student life, there are different student associations that organise study sessions, parties and get-togethers.
The international environment makes it easier to make friends and interact with all kinds of people.

Game design is more than just games

The focus is game design, but they also teach you so much more! About design in general, art, programming and even business! It prepares you for every aspect you may encounter in the future. One thing that could be better is the help they provide, since a lot of time you have to teach yourself due to lack of explanation. But your fellow classmates are always willing to help each other! If your course is in English you can expect a lot of international students! I’m looking forward to learning more and improving!

International Communications is the to-go option of study.

I really like that we have 4-5 subjects and that they are interconnected. The teachers are young and inspiring and they all know how to explain a hard topic with simpler words. I also like that we work in groups because you meet new people from other countries and cultures. We learn new techniques on how to communicate with other cultures and I also learned how to get better at communication with others. My favourite skill that I learned is in the subject “Tools” and is Adobe apps competency. The programme’s content corresponds with the trends in the world like politics, economy and need for computer skills. I like that we educate ourselves according to such important matters which is essential in today’s lifestyle.

What I don’t like is the excessive amount of theory. We have to read hundreds of pages before the exam and then only 30% of it is in the exam and it is the exact theory that we use when we do our projects. Another thing that I don’t like is the internship report in the third year. It is way too long having in mind we are working 8 hours 5 days in the week and trying to have some rest and social life at the end of the day. I think it should be shortened since it takes a lot of the time dedicated to social activities.

I think all subjects should be graded from 1-10 and not with Pass-Fail since 1-10 feels more rewarding when you have put so much effort into it. Taking as an example the internship report: I put 2 months of work into it and wrote 70 pages in order to get a simple Pass, which doesn’t really give me direction if I did okay or very well.

Groningen is the perfect city for students since there are a lot of students and it is very likely to find someone from your country which is comforting for people who are not used yet to communicating with intercultural people and in different languages. There are a lot of bars, clubs, museums and other interesting facilities. The Forum and the libraries are perfect for studying outside of your home. I always recommend Hanze to students who want to study in The Netherlands.

The school is very international speaking of students, but they can work on having more internationalism among the teachers especially for subjects that teach interculturalism. Groningen is awful when it comes to finding accommodation and it is always a battle to find a room/apartment/student room. I highly suggest Hanze build more student houses.

Career-wise, I think International Communication teaches students multiple important aspects and makes you realise what part of communications you like – business stuff, marketing, PR, doing speeches, etc.

I was not very satisfied from the first year, because a lot of the assignments were connected to digital drawing rather than game design, which was not fun at all. There was also a lot of confusion about some assignments. Neither the students nor the professors knew what was going on, which slowed down the work process a lot. However during the 2nd year, it is way better in terms of assignments. Everything that I have done till now is related to games only, which is quite fun, but I did not expect it to be that hard. I was not prepared to make a whole game by myself only.

    Perfect AEGEE proof University

The Hanze is a good university with focusses on its practical approach to society. The staff is always helpful and willing to listen. Personally I am very active at my amazing student association AEGEE. Even in cases such as taking a gap year for a board term the school was supportive and helpful. Hanze lets you explore your own capabilities, they gently hold the brakes of your educational life, without harshly squeezing them for control. Also, Groningen is an incredible student city that lets you fully enjoy all the possibilities student life has to offer.
