I studied tourism at UAB for one semester in 2022. I was supposed to stay for a full year, but my experience wasn’t good and I left after the first semester.
First of all, the housing area (Villa universitária) has mold. I was sick constantly during my exhange and went through multiple respiratory infections. I also had almost daily headaches and a very painful and strong cough. All of this eased after a couple weeks once I returned to my home country. Other exhange students told me about having the same issues and some noticed mold in their apartment walls.
The housing area at times is very unsave and not controlled properly.
The tourism faculty is located in the same building with the housing area reception. Therefore, it was very excluded from the rest of the campus. That’s why, I didn’t really get to use any of the services offered at the campus or get a real university experience.
UAB also has a medical centre for “all students” according to their website, yet this doesn’t include tourism students. I was turned away from the centre despite being extremely sick once they heard I study tourism at the school.
The classes focused more on remembering as much information as you can to pass the exam, rather than focusing on understanding, critical thinking etc. The teachers were very often late to classes, they felt very unmotivated and I received very little feedback.
In short, I do not recommend UAB. My experience was a loss of money and time.
