I started my degree in 2003 on the BA in Public and Social Policy, and overall my experience at the University of Galway was very positive.

The programme itself was well structured and intellectually engaging, offering a strong grounding in public policy, social systems, and the role of the state in areas such as welfare, governance, and social issues. The quality of teaching was consistently strong across most modules, with lecturers who were knowledgeable and committed to their subjects.

One lecturer in particular stood out for being exceptionally supportive, approachable, and empathetic. Her guidance had a meaningful impact on my academic experience and made a real difference at the time.

The facilities were solid for the period, and the university environment felt well resourced and conducive to study.

A major highlight for me was involvement in clubs and societies. This was an important part of my time there, helping me build friendships, explore interests outside of my course, and feel more connected to university life.

Looking back, I would describe it as a well-rounded experience academically and socially, with strong teaching, good student support, and valuable opportunities for personal development.

The University of Galway strikes a rare balance between deep-rooted tradition and cutting-edge research. Walking around the Quadrangle, you feel like you’ve stepped into a historical novel, yet inside the research labs, groundbreaking work in biomedical engineering and environmental science is happening daily. I had the chance to assist in a renewable energy project that focused on wave energy, which was something I never expected from an Irish university. Academics here are solid, but the real charm is in the student experience. Every year, the Arts Festival transforms the city into a vibrant hub of creativity, and student societies—from the Harry Potter Society to the Surf Club—offer something for everyone. If you’re looking for a university where you can get a quality education while still having an unforgettable social life, Galway is hard to beat.
