    Research Oriented Mindset

As the University is a part of the U15 Canada group, the professors are actively involved in research projects and encourage students to apply for research opportunities. Academic student clubs regularly conduct seminars on applying for research. Research positions open every summer to top applicants for the job. As a prospective research student, this is one of the main reasons that prompted me to apply to the university. One point for improvement is that research positions are very limited for a very large cohort of undergraduate 1st-2nd year students, making the process really competitive. Minor research projects that allow students to gain research experience would be helpful.

University of Manitoba - Faculty of Science

The University of Manitoba is great university to attend but has potential to become so much greater. As a student who initially struggled adjusting to University lifestyle coming out of high school, The UofM has lots of support systems in place to help students going through any kind of life/academic struggles. A downside to the UofM would be the constant threat of a strike. Since I’ve attended UofM there has been two different strikes that derail the lives of students and make their studies a lot more difficult. I would recommend this University to new students but would also advise them to be weary.

Not everyone is for university and that is okay

My opinion when it comes to University of Manitoba is about 60/40. I don’t love the school itself but I am more than grateful for the experiences and connections I have made throughout the years by attending the institution. I like how there are a lot of programs to choose from which can be very daunting for first year students. However, just like in any university or college, you would have to navigate and figure out which program or career choice you would be passionate and driven to finish. Not everyone is for university and that is completely okay. I may have realized it a bit too late as I am too deep and in my last year of my degree/program already, but I can’t say that I 100% regret applying for one in the first place. I have gained valuable insight on how to navigate the world by being a university student alone. You are faced with different kinds of obstacles while studying whether that is balancing your time and priorities (time management), switching degrees or programs due to that degree no longer making you happy, knowing how to professionally speak and act to seniority in the field such as professors or instructors, battling mental health issues caused by stress when it comes to passing a course or dealing something at home and everything in between. One of the things that I genuinely don’t like about the school is how there are very limited slots when it comes to higher level courses in the biological and computer sciences department. It may be because of lack of staff to teach the specific course or they just won’t increase the limit of students getting into that class. This is a frustrating issue that many of the biology and computer science students face, as it could push back or delay their graduation date more often than we want. I sincerely just hope they would address this issue a lot more seriously because not everyone is as fortunate to fund their own tuition fees, as the Manitoba loans could only lend money in a specific time frame (maximum is 5 years I believe) after that you are all alone. So, my biggest conclusion is to genuinely make sure to figure out as fast as you can whether university might be the right path for you.
