University of Ghana has been one of the most sought after colleges in Africa but also it is the one-stop prestigious learning center for international students. I had the opportunity to study medical geography in UG from 2013 to 2017, and I loved it! The department lecturers are hardworking and examination questions are structured as open-ended so that students can think to answer them. I love that other students in the department are friendly and willing to get into study groups to meet and study together. There is the Geography Department Student Association that routinely organizes field trips to make our classroom learning experience very practical. Geography at IU has really paid off because I got admission to do postgraduate studies in the United States.
There is one thing that I think UG falls short in. And that has to do with high living costs. Canteens and small grocery shops sell at expensive prices. Considering myself an average-income student at UG, I had a difficult time trying to get nutritious food around my residential hall. However, there was a way around this – the Madina traditional market is closer to the UG campus, about 10 minutes drive. Madina market sells very cheap groceries and food and this made my life easier.
Overall, I think UG deserves its prestigious position in Africa, ranking among the top 15 universities. The lecturers are great and the campus is safe for students.
View moreIt was trash and hard and full of hardships. I did not have a great experience at all. The department of nutrition and food science had no working equipment and we could not have enough time to complete the syllabus
View moreI pursued my BA in Sociology at UG and the program was great! UG has required courses such as Academic Writing, Science and technology, and Numeracy Skills that supplemented my main program. These courses equipped with me sharp writing skills but also opened my mind to efficiently engage in my sociology program. There are many groups on campus that provide students with practical experience. Student groups provide peer counselling, advocate for sexual human rights, and organize educational trips, among others. These experiences spice up student lives on Campus and they broaden your scope beyond the classroom knowledge.
However, there is one thing that can be done to improve the student experience at UG. There is not much engagement between lecturers and students. What I mean is that there seems to be a big gap between students and lecturers such that most students are unable to reach out to them. I think there should be departmental informal socialization once a week where students and lecturers can sit to chat informally and maybe have some finger foods and drinks. This can break the barrier between students and lecturers.
Serene environment, state of the art facilities and great lecturers. Student life was fun and there are a lot of extracurricular activities. Some lectures are taught online but everything is in-depth. All in all, it was a great experience
View moreBeing a premier university, I would say the University of Ghana is a great place to study. The courses offered are great and I would say the Political Science program I did was really good. They have lots of convenient places for studies, including the Balme Library. The professors for various programs are really amazing. The accommodation system is good but not very adequate. I preferred to stay in the private hostel compared to the traditional ones, although the latter is more expensive.
Overall, I would recommend the University of Ghana for future prospects. They have the various courses and cut off grade points for making decisions as to which courses to apply on their official website.
Everything on and off-Campus is very perfect and this programme helps students so much that teaching, learning and networking have become more effective in the current program. Creating opportunities for studies is a real World factor for students around the globe.
View morePractical sessions with up to date information are made available to students. Teaching assistants and lecturers are always available to assist you. Very serene campus and lecture halls. Very friendly environment and facilities.
View moreI love the fact that my program gave me a general knowledge which cut across marketing, communication, and information management which involves the creation, usage, preservation and manipulation. I also like the fact that I was equipped with knowledge in IT courses like programming of which I was able to polish my language skills in c, and later lead me into having an interest in adding HTML, Javascript and PHP. The benefits are numerous. The downside is the fact that the school of information studies sometimes lack the availability of proper internet infrastructure to enhance research and other matters.
View moreThe school instils discipline and good character in students and the teacher-student relationship was a friendly one which allows students to ask questions anytime without fear. I think the school needs to build a good rapport with other international schools to enable students to go on exchange programs frequently to help build upon their study program. The programs offered in the school help create good opportunities and careers in the future and also helps in good communication among others. Students from this school are able to work under pressure too without strict supervision and this helps create smart students in the end.
View moreI love the way courses were structured to extensively exhaust the necessary knowledge base surrounding them. I also admire how lecturers go the extra length to impart knowledge and make sure there is a high level of understanding before proceeding all in the course allocated time. I think that is due to the delivery methods and I was grateful for the great care they showed in handling students
