Nowadays, more and more students start to pursue a degree in modern languages. A modern languages degree is not only related to learning a new language but also understand the cultural context of the countries in which the language is spoken.
Candidates studying a modern languages course will also be given knowledge and experience of the political and historical contexts of a particular region. On top of that, the use of literary texts and media will develop not only their skills but also their perception about learning a different language.
Due to the increased globalisation, there is a high demand for modern languages graduates. The ability to communicate in another language and understand its background is a major advantage.
Modern Language courses are designed to give students transferable skills, which can be applied in all areas of activity. Candidates will have high communication skills, accompanied by data collection and interpreting skills, which are appreciated by employers, regardless of your career choice.
Modern Languages Degrees are four years commitments, out of which one semester or a year should be spent abroad – in a partnered institution. This gives students the opportunity to practice the language they are studying and understand a new culture.
Modern Languages is a degree that can be studied either as a single honour degree or a joint honour degree. This gives students the ability to combine modern language with another course such as politics, literature, history and many others.
The University of Ghana is the premier University in Ghana. It has a beautiful atmosphere and provides a conducive learning environment. However, what I disliked the most about the school was the large number of students in the class. one may find about 200 students in a class which makes it difficult for a lecturer to know his students or for students to participate actively in class
View moreMy experience at the university of Ghana was generally good if I count the people I met and some of the activities I got the chance to partake in. In terms of academics, everything just seemed fast paced. You either keep up with the pace or fail. Many students end up with severe stress and depression due to their inability to do this. However, the lecturers are generally great, intelligent well rounded people. Many of them are open to interactions with students and offer great advice. They do not play about their courses or grading system though- you will receive no mercy there. As a student who combined two courses, things were especially hard as they were not related in any way. The initial excitement quickly left me as the coursework and grading began to affect me and my grades began dropping. In a situation like this, you either find a way to get out or drown. The school provides counselling services although in most cases, rather belatedly.
Personally, I am of the opinion that it would greatly help if students are given thorough information about their course before adding or dropping any and some relaxation in the course rules will greatly help students. By this, I mean students should be free to choose and do any course from any department for at least one of their courses each semester instead of restricting it to departments.
