My experience at the university of Ghana was generally good if I count the people I met and some of the activities I got the chance to partake in. In terms of academics, everything just seemed fast paced. You either keep up with the pace or fail. Many students end up with severe stress and depression due to their inability to do this. However, the lecturers are generally great, intelligent well rounded people. Many of them are open to interactions with students and offer great advice. They do not play about their courses or grading system though- you will receive no mercy there. As a student who combined two courses, things were especially hard as they were not related in any way. The initial excitement quickly left me as the coursework and grading began to affect me and my grades began dropping. In a situation like this, you either find a way to get out or drown. The school provides counselling services although in most cases, rather belatedly.
Personally, I am of the opinion that it would greatly help if students are given thorough information about their course before adding or dropping any and some relaxation in the course rules will greatly help students. By this, I mean students should be free to choose and do any course from any department for at least one of their courses each semester instead of restricting it to departments.
