What is a Communications degree?

Communications is a universal degree, which explores the traditional forms of communication such as verbal, physical, visual and written communication but also extends beyond that to cover mass communication and social media. There are different types of communications degrees depending on the degree level.

Overall, Communications focuses on teaching effective communication through social media, web, print, mass media and verbal communication. However, there are two types of Communications degrees that exist. For instance, a Bachelor of Arts in Communications in the US is focused on preparing students for careers that are connected to writing, marketing, promotions, journalism and public relations. In contrast, Bachelor of Science in Communications is dedicated to the technology used in the science behind modern communication and prepares students for careers in production or sound engineering.

A Communications degree teaches students about how media and communication influences cultures, societies and people’s identities. It involves a significant amount of critical writing and research and covers different disciplines such as journalism, public relations, entertainment production, marketing, event planning and so many more disciplines, which are somehow connected to exchanging information and conveying messages. There are also different specialization options associated with this degree, including political communication, mass media, journalism, health communication, etc.

It is worth noting that a Communications degree has many intersection points with psychology, sociology, linguistics and in some cases politics.

Benefits of a Communications degree

The main benefit of a Communications degree is its universal nature. It applies to almost any subject or professional setting. For example, some of the top careers in the field of Communications include announcers, art directors, editors, broadcast and sound engineering technicians, reporters, correspondents, broadcast analysts, technical writers, writers and authors, interpreters, translators, etc. Therefore, it keeps students’ career options open and doesn’t require them to have a predetermined career path that they want to follow.

Communications degrees prepare students to make an impact from the start of their careers unlike other degrees, which require further training. This is possible thanks to the multitude of professionally accredited degrees in Communications, which develop students’ abilities based on the established standards in the field. Moreover, there are many Communications courses, which offer work placement opportunities that enable students to gain the required professional skills before they have even started their career.

Another benefit associated with Communications degrees is the fact that they develop students’ written and verbal communication skills significantly.

A major advantage of Communications over other degrees is that in most cases there are no prerequisites required to study Communications.

Communications degree structure

The duration of a Communications degree varies depending on the country and degree level. For example, Higher Education Institutions in the UK offer 3-year Bachelor’s courses. In some cases, the course may extend to four years if students are given the opportunity to spend a year abroad or in industry between the second and third year through a sandwich course. Bachelor’s degrees in Communications in the US usually take around four years to complete.

Over the duration of a Bachelor’s Communications degree, students are expected to learn and be able to apply the established communications theories by developing the technical skills required to work in a professional setting. In the first year of their studies, students learn predominantly how media and communication influences cultures, societies and people’s identities. Optional modules may introduce them to professional communication, journalism, documentary, film-making, marketing, etc. In addition to the introductory topics, this degree allows students to learn about more complex areas of communications such as interpersonal relations, brand management and linguistics at a later stage. For instance, the second and third years enable students to get a deeper understanding of theoretical concepts related to media and culture and develop practical skills in research and communications. Additionally, students may have the opportunity to take optional modules and pursue their interests in different areas related to Communications such as gender, race, youth, culture, digital media, political communication, public relations, etc.

The most common duration of a Master’s degree in Communications is between 1 and 2 years depending on the mode of study (full-time or part-time) and country.

PhD and MPhil degrees in Communications require students to dedicate anywhere between 3 and 6 years to their studies depending on the mode and country of study.

Majoring in Communications at Wilfrid Laurier

The spirit of Wilfrid Laurier is unmatched to any other school. In terms of inclusion, Laurier has a huge number of Clubs and Associations that are constantly recruiting anybody and everybody. As a communications major, I find my programme particularly amazing. As a student that did not have one specific aspiration post high-school graduation, enrolling in communications was one of the best decisions I’ve made. With a degree as diverse as communications, I’ve opened an eye toward positions in Public Relations, Marketing, Media, and Human Resources. The faculty of the school is always excited to support your success, and it equipped with incredible resources for all students.

    Communication Studies Program at Laurier

Immersing myself in the Communication Studies program at Wilfrid Laurier University has been a genuinely enriching experience. The program, marked by its insightful and thought-provoking nature, adeptly challenges conventional preconceptions. What particularly captivated me was the program’s holistic approach to communication, urging students to scrutinize how messages are conveyed across diverse platforms, including the intricate landscape of social media. The coursework necessitates a meticulous analysis of not only the content but also how messages are presented and the underlying communication they convey.

Beyond the intricacies of communication, the program delves into the exploration of pertinent social issues, such as racism, sexism, and poverty. This multifaceted perspective enhances the depth of understanding, fostering a comprehensive awareness of the interconnected nature of communication and societal challenges.

In essence, my time in the Communication Studies program has been both insightful and stimulating, broadening my perspective on the intricacies of communication while equipping me with a nuanced understanding of pressing social issues.

    Communications Program

I loved my years at Laurier and would really recommend the Communications program to anyone who wants to go into marketing/PR/journalism or maybe doesn’t know yet what to do. I know so many people who graduated from the program and are doing something completely unrelated now (one girl is in health science, another in political science, another is doing law school in the UK right now, etc.)
Having transferred into the program after not liking first-year Economics and being convinced by a friend that it’s a similar path to marketing as BBA, I hesitantly decided to switch into it and see how it goes. Back then, I didn’t really know what the program consisted of or how to explain it to people who asked me what it was. I also thought I hated writing due to the sour taste that high school English class left for me. I also didn’t realize the program was super writing-heavy. Now that I’ve graduated from it, I can easily say that it was the best decision I could’ve made for myself. The program allowed me to really strengthen my research and writing skills and has exposed me to numerous philosophical and theoretical concepts that have helped shape the way I see and think of the world (both personally and in a career sense). It’s a great path for someone who doesn’t want to deal with business cases, numbers, and presentations but still gets into the business career they want afterward or who isn’t quite yet sure what career they want for themselves.
Most of the communications profs are really great and make you feel super comfortable with coming up to them for help. They’re really relaxed and understanding and that meant a lot in certain times. The students are also super nice and everyone has just a chill vibe to them (unlike other programs at the school…)
I really loved the program and Laurier in itself because of the small campus and community feel it brings. If you’re considering going here, just do it 🙂

Great program, friendly students, small campus

As a communications studies major, I really enjoyed the variety of different classes the program offered. The program really is what you make it. I switched out from Economics because I wasn’t feeling too sure about what career I wanted to pursue in the future. Studying communications allowed for me to leave multiple paths open for myself and curate my degree to my liking. There are only 4 required communications courses you must take and the rest are up to you and which path you want to follow (sports media, cultural, media and history, digital media, visual communication, etc.)
The student life at Laurier is fantastic. Everyone is super friendly. There aren’t any major “cliques” that run the campus. Each club is very humble and all the students are very easy-going and nice. It’s a fairly small campus which makes it easy to run into people, but with that, it’s nice to always run into familiar faces! The small campus also makes it easy for getting to your back-to-back class on time since everything is a short walking distance!
