What Is a Marketing Degree?

A business cannot survive if its products are not marketed in the proper way. Luckily for all the businesses out there, the number of candidates wanting to pursue a marketing career is growing tremendously. 

The aim of this degree is to help students anticipate, manage, and satisfy customers’ needs and wants. By doing so, they will be able to effectively communicate the benefits of any business product to the targeted market. 

Due to the fact that marketing is a complex industry, which tackles many areas ranging from market research to advertising and promotion, this degree focuses on all parts of the process before concentrating on a particular area of study.

 

Benefits of a Marketing Degree

Good news for marketing graduates! If you did not know yet, marketing is an essential aspect of all types of businesses, from all sectors of activity. Thus, all of them rely on marketers to promote and sell their products. A high market demand comes with many job opportunities available. 

According to Labor Department Findings, graduates with a marketing degree can earn 98% more per hour than the ones working in the industry without having a specialised degree.

Furthermore, students are equipped with transferable skills, such as excellent communication abilities, strategic thinking, planning, data analysis and so on, that can be used in other industries too.

Marketing Degree Structure

Marketing degrees can be studied either as Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BSc). The major difference lies in the presence of more scientific and technological aspects, which are commonly seen in a BSc rather than a BA. 

Like most degrees, marketing courses last between three and four years, depending on the university. However, there are institutions which give students the possibility to do a two-year associate’s degree – also called a ‘foundation’ degree. 

Even if graduating from both degrees qualifies candidates to work in this industry, a Bachelor degree has higher chances to lead you to well-paid jobs.

    A Strong Community at UTM

    My experience at UTM has been very positive overall, especially because of the campus environment and the sense of community. One thing that immediately stood out to me is how compact the campus is. Since everything is within walking distance, you constantly run into familiar faces, which makes it much easier to build connections and feel like part of a community rather than just another student in a huge university system.
    Campus life is a major highlight. The campus is extremely green in the spring and fall, with lots of open spaces, trees, and trails that make studying and walking between classes genuinely enjoyable. In the winter, the campus is completely covered in snow, which gives it a quiet, almost peaceful feel. The smaller size also means clubs, events, and student spaces feel more accessible and less overwhelming compared to larger campuses.
    Academically, I’ve had a great experience with my professors. Most are approachable, knowledgeable, and genuinely invested in helping students succeed. Office hours are useful, and professors are open to questions and discussions, which really helps with understanding course material. Classes encourage critical thinking and practical application rather than just memorization.
    Overall, UTM offers the strong academic reputation of the University of Toronto while still maintaining a supportive, close-knit campus atmosphere. I would recommend it to students who value community, accessible professors, and a calm but engaging campus life.

    Working for achievement, not benefits

    As a university with expectations set high, there are many things which are to be met to be able to fully grasp the opportunities given from the various programs. As someone who is in marketing specialist, being close minded is not an option. Working for the “money” is not something which should be a top priority, not just for this program but for anyone. From my experience, the more immersed into a concept you get, not motivated by gains, the better outcome you receive. One more important point I can leave you with is, don’t make studying the center of your university life. Despite everything, academic, gives you the grades, not the connections. And for marketing, connections are extremely valued. Go out, enjoy your time, meet new people and be caught up with your assignment and lectures. By doing that I can guarantee, whichever program you’re pursuing, you’ll succeed. Best of Luck.

    intersection of business, technology, & strategy

    If I had to highlight one thing about the DEM program, it’s that it sits at the intersection of business, technology, and strategy. It’s not a traditional business degree and it’s definitely not a computer science program either. Instead, it focuses on understanding how digital technologies shape organizations, markets, and management decisions. For someone like me who is interested in innovation, AI, digital platforms, and the future of work, this perspective is actually very valuable. The program teaches you how to think about technology from a managerial and strategic angle, rather than just learning how to code.

    One thing that stood out to me in DEM is that many courses are very discussion-based and concept-driven. Classes like project management, innovation policy, and digital economy courses focus heavily on case studies, group work, and applied thinking. You’re often analyzing real companies, digital platforms, or emerging technologies rather than just memorizing theory. I also appreciated courses where we explored things like design thinking, digital sustainability, and platform economies, because they make you think about how technology actually impacts society and organizations.

    That said, one thing I sometimes find frustrating about the program is that it can feel a bit broad. You learn about many topics: technology, management, digital culture, strategy, but sometimes not in extreme technical depth. If someone is expecting to graduate with strong technical skills like programming or data science, DEM is probably not the right fit. It’s much more about management and understanding technology, rather than building it.

    In terms of campus life, UTM has a beautiful campus and a quieter environment compared to downtown Toronto. It’s a good place if you like a more focused academic atmosphere. At the same time, because it’s a commuter campus, the social life can sometimes feel a bit limited compared to larger residential universities. Joining clubs definitely helps, being involved in student organizations and extracurricular projects made my experience much more interesting.

    Overall, I would recommend the DEM program to students who are curious about how technology, business, and organizations interact, and who want a flexible degree that can lead into many fields like consulting, entrepreneurship, product management, or tech strategy. It’s especially good for people who are interested in the bigger picture of digital transformation, not just the technical side of technology.
