Wide range of knowledge acquired and even though this comes at the price of a heavy workload, I’d say it’s worth it. The professors are very approachable and it is generally a health learning environment. For international students, the tuition is an absolute steal, given the quality of education.

I chose Hasselt University for its unique and practical Master’s in Transportation Sciences, especially the focus on traffic safety. From the moment I arrived, I felt warmly welcomed and supported by the staff and the buddy program, which helped me settle in quickly. One of my favourite experiences was the World Evening event, where students from all over the world shared their cultures, traditions, and food—it truly made me feel at home and proud to represent my country. Academically, courses like the Transport Innovation Challenge gave me real-world insights and broadened my perspective. Learning Dutch through UHasselt also helped me connect with the community. Overall, Hasselt University offers a supportive and enriching environment that truly helps international students thrive.

Studying Transportation Sciences at Hasselt University has been one of the most exciting and rewarding decisions I’ve made. The program pushed me to grow both academically and personally. As an international student, settling in wasn’t always easy, but making friends, both international and local, played a big role in helping me adjust. The support from the university staff especially the kindness and professionalism of Tine, Patricia, and Nadine made me feel truly seen and supported. Taking Dutch classes also helped me connect with the community and navigate daily life with more confidence. I’m deeply grateful for this journey

As an Iranian student with experience in the transportation sector, I was excited to discover new aspects of the field through the courses here. Before coming to Belgium, I expected the program to be more engineering-oriented, even though I knew it was transportation sciences. Still, I really enjoyed studying in such a peaceful city. The people in Belgium are genuinely friendly and supportive, which made my experience even better.

If I could make a suggestion, I’d love to see more engineering and hands-on courses added to the program. I think that would really help students prepare for the job market in the EU.

Adjusting to a new education system and settling into life in Belgium wasn’t always easy—language barriers and paperwork were challenging at first—but the supportive environment, approachable staff, and friendly city of Hasselt made it easier to adapt. Looking back, the mix of practical learning, strong academic support, and a welcoming international atmosphere has made this a truly valuable experience.

My time at Hasselt University was truly transformative — a blend of academic growth, cultural exchange, and personal development. The international master’s program in Interior Architecture offered enriching study trips and a diverse community that encouraged cross-cultural learning. While adapting to a new academic system was challenging in the beginning, the support from professors and local classmates helped me adjust quickly. These positive experiences led me to pursue a PhD within the same department, where I found a close-knit, collaborative environment and continued opportunities for research and professional growth. UHasselt has given me lasting friendships, meaningful experiences, and a true sense of belonging.

While learning Dutch can be difficult, the people in Hasselt are very open and supportive, and many speak English. The Dutch lessons and introduction programme offered by the university have also been very helpful in adapting to daily life in Belgium.

Hasselt University is an exceptional choice for science and engineering students. The relatively small size of the university allows for personalized supervision, which facilitates interaction between students and professors. The laboratories are well equipped, and the courses are often oriented towards practical applications, which is very enriching. However, the organization of the courses could be more flexible to adapt to the needs of international students. The city of Hasselt is charming and offers a quiet environment for studying, with many cultural activities nearby. For those looking for a solid education and a friendly atmosphere, I highly recommend this university.
