Studying in Europe doesn’t have to mean living in overcrowded capitals filled with tourists. There are plenty of less well-known destinations where you can still attend a top-ranked institution and experience a vibrant student life.
As part of the EDUopinions Student Reviews Guide 2026, we’ve uncovered Europe’s best-kept student destinations – smaller cities delivering world-class education, authentic culture and amazing experiences without the crowds or price tag of major capitals. From medieval university towns to lakeside Swiss gems, these are the undiscovered cities that real students rank highly for student life.
If you read last year’s edition of the Hidden Gem Student Cities, you’ll be familiar with some of the destinations on this list. However, there are newcomers this year – and not all of last year’s undiscovered cities made the cut.
This blog is part of the EDUopinions Student Reviews Guide 2026. Read more of the articles in this series.
Top 10 Hidden Gem Student Cities in Europe 2026

Summary and methodology
To create this ranking, we analysed student reviews posted on EDUopinions between January 1st 2025 and December 31st 2025. Then, we filtered by university country, selecting only European countries with at least 10 reviews. This gave us a total of 3,475 reviews to analyse.
For our hidden gems ranking, we filtered locations with 20-70 reviews. There was an important reason for this distinction: it removed most capital cities from the ranking, which would inevitably attract more reviews because of their size and greater number of universities. By limiting student reviews, we could better identify cities rated highly by students that may be overshadowed by more well-known destinations.
Our ranking was determined by the ‘student life’ rating given by EDUopinions reviewers, which is the individual rating most likely to reflect student lifestyle, city life, and extracurricular experiences.
The one exception to our general methodology is Coimbra, Spain. Universities in Coimbra received 88 reviews in 2025 – a significant number, and more than most cities on our primary Student Cities ranking. However, given the city’s size and relative popularity, we’ve chosen to include it on our Hidden Gems list.
10. Leeuwarden, the Netherlands (4.42/5 Student Life Rating)

Leeuwarden is one of the Netherlands’ most charming student cities, offering Dutch university life without Amsterdam’s crowds or costs. This compact northern city hosts nearly 30,000 students across various institutions, including NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences and the University of Groningen.
What makes Leeuwarden particularly special is its authentic Dutch character – you’ll experience genuine Frisian culture rather than tourist-focused city life. The compact city centre, filled with canals, historic buildings and independent cafés, was named European Capital of Culture in 2018 and holds UNESCO City of Literature status. Leeuwarden also benefits from straightforward train connections to Groningen (35 minutes) and Amsterdam (2 hours), meaning you get small-city charm with easy access to bigger centres. For students seeking an authentic Dutch experience where international students genuinely integrate rather than forming separate communities, Leeuwarden delivers something truly special.
Student Review – NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences
I’m currently a 4th-year Hospitality Management student, so I will be graduating at the end of this year. And I can say that I had an amazing time as a student at NHL-Stenden in Leeuwarden!
Leeuwarden is a smaller city, but that doesn’t mean that it’s boring. Since it’s smaller, it quickly gave me a feeling of “home”, and I easily met new people from all over the world.
The opportunities to go abroad are very exciting. In my 3rd year, I went on Grand Tour (minors) to Thailand and Indonesia, it was an amazing experience! And right now I started my 10-month internship in Aruba (an island in the Caribbean). All in all, there are plenty of options to choose from.
In my opinion, the Hospitality study course has a good structure. With a blend of theoretical classes and a good focus on practical education. However, at some moments, the theoretical part of this study can feel quite vague and unclear, which can be confusing when making assignments. But in the end, teachers are always there to help and provide you with feedback.
What I enjoy about this study is that you can make it as busy and challenging as you want, with a lot of extracurricular activities and specialisation courses to choose from (competition teams, diverse associations, workshops, extra wine courses to obtain certificates…)
During my study period, I not only gained knowledge about the Hospitality Industry, but I also learned a lot about myself as a person and a professional, which is very valuable to me.
Overall, I am very positive about my choice of studying at NHL-Stenden. I am grateful for all my experiences and the people I met.
Student Review – NHL Stenden
I’m a second-year Creative Business (CB) student and I really enjoy my study programme. What I like most about CB is its versatility. You get to learn a bit about everything: business, marketing, production, editing and much more. The learning style is very practical, which makes it easier to connect new information to real-life situations. Thanks to the design-based education, there is a lot of group work, reflection and space to make mistakes and improve from them.
One thing that makes this uni experience even better is the beautiful university buildings, with amazing places to sit and study or to have a chat with your friends. Another thing is that all the coaches are very open and friendly, which creates a more relaxed atmosphere.
Overall, it’s a programme where you can try out different things and discover what you enjoy. However, there are still areas that could be improved, such as communication between the academy, coaches and students. Despite that, my experience so far has been very positive and I’m happy I chose this study!
9. Vilnius, Lithuania (4.44/5 Rating)

Vilnius captivates students with its fairytale Old Town, forward-thinking tech scene and affordability. Lithuania’s capital welcomes thousands of students each year, many of whom arrive to study at the country’s oldest and largest institution, Vilnius University. The university’s main campus is located in the heart of Old Town, with stunning historic buildings – imagine attending lectures in 16th-century courtyards.
What sets Vilnius apart is its remarkable value – monthly living costs average just €300-600, dramatically cheaper than anywhere in Western Europe. The baroque architecture, cobblestone streets and medieval churches create an inspiring backdrop, whilst the city’s growing startup ecosystem (dubbed the ‘Baltic Tiger’) provides excellent career prospects. Weekend trips to Riga, Tallinn or even Warsaw are simple and affordable. For students wanting serious academics, stunning surroundings and financial breathing room, Vilnius offers an unbeatable combination rarely found elsewhere in Europe.
Student Review – Vilnius University
Studying International and European Law at Vilnius University has been a genuinely enriching experience. The programme combines solid academic depth with a practical understanding of how international and EU institutions work. Courses are well structured, often taught by professors who are not only knowledgeable but also very approachable and open to discussion. What I like most is that many of them bring real-life cases from their professional experience, which makes classes engaging and relevant.
The learning environment itself is supportive, seminars are interactive, and classmates come from different countries and backgrounds, so discussions are always diverse and insightful. Facilities are modern and comfortable: the main law building and libraries are well equipped, and the Saulėtekis campus has great study spaces and a calm atmosphere.
As for accommodation, Vilnius University provides decent dormitory options that are affordable and located close to the campus. Rooms are simple but functional, and it’s easy to meet other international students there. Some students also choose to rent apartments in the city, which is relatively affordable compared to other European capitals.
Living in Vilnius has been a pleasant surprise, the city feels safe, student-friendly, and full of cultural life. Overall, this programme offers both academic quality and a good lifestyle balance, making it a great choice for anyone interested in building a career in international or European law.
Student Review – Vilnius University
Vilnius University exceeded my expectations! Rich history, modern facilities, and welcoming staff. Lecturers were knowledgeable and supportive. Vilnius city is charming and affordable. Highly recommend for international students.
8. Hamburg, Germany (4.50/5 Rating)

Hamburg offers impressive academic credentials with a genuinely vibrant cultural scene. The University of Hamburg is the largest institution in the city, with around 43,000 students, including a significant international cohort – it ranks 193rd globally. It offers extensive English-taught programmes across all disciplines. Meanwhile, Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) specialises in engineering excellence, with over 8,000 students and exceptional industry connections to companies such as Airbus and Siemens.
The infamous Reeperbahn entertainment district, the world-class Elbphilharmonie concert hall, the thriving music scene, and the proximity to the coast provide endless entertainment for students in the city. The city’s importance as Germany’s media capital and northern economic powerhouse means excellent career prospects, particularly in logistics, media, aerospace and renewable energy. Hamburg proves that German quality education needn’t mean provincial towns or expensive southern cities – you can have both substance and style.
Student Review – Kühne Logistics University – KLU
Studying at KLU is highly recommended and a different experience from what you might be used to from state universities. KLU offers an exceptional student-prof ratio and highly knowledgeable professors teach in an international environment with high intercultural exchange. Furthermore, the facilities are modern and the campus is in the Hamburg HafenCity, laying very central and offering a breathtaking view at the Elbphilharmonie.
Student Review – Kühne Logistics University
Very good professors. Very good infrastructure and care about the students.
Good networking oportunities and different kinds of events. Very international environment with people from all over the world.
7. Liverpool, United Kingdom (4.50/5 Rating)

Liverpool punches well above its weight as a student destination, combining Russell Group academics with legendary culture. The iconic northern city welcomes approximately 60,000 students across its universities, creating one of Britain’s liveliest student communities. The largest of those is the University of Liverpool, ranked 147th globally, which hosts 8,000 international students.
The city’s cultural heritage speaks for itself – birthplace of The Beatles, two Premier League football clubs, more museums than anywhere outside London, and a UNESCO World Heritage waterfront. The city’s legendary nightlife, particularly around Concert Square and the Cavern Quarter, offers everything from student-friendly pubs to world-class music venues. Plus, direct train links to Manchester (45 minutes) and London (2.5 hours) maintain connections without London price tags. There’s a reason that Liverpool was recently named the best student city in the UK.
Student Review – University of Liverpool – UOL
Liverpool is a really good place to study. The uni has a solid reputation, but at the same time, it doesn’t feel intimidating ; you can always reach out for help if you need it. The city is what makes the experience even better: lots of music, football, and nightlife, plus it’s cheaper than a lot of other UK cities. Some courses are intense, but overall, if you want both an education and a good student lifestyle, Liverpool delivers. I’m happy to be here.
Student Review – University of Liverpool
Overall, I have really enjoyed my time so far at the University of Liverpool. I think that the way my course is taught is very good. Although there is a lot of in-person teaching, a good part is online and it allows you to learn at your own pace. I enjoy this freedom, so I can fit my academic work nicely around my personal life.
The lectures, in person and online, unfortunately, I don’t learn well from. I think that they are too long-winded and an inefficient way to learn, but that’s just me.
I think the city of Liverpool is a great city to live in whilst at uni. It’s not too big or small. It has a great nightlife, and the University team provides a good number of opportunities/events.
6. Bath, United Kingdom (4.52/5 Rating)

Bath offers something genuinely rare – a small, stunningly beautiful historic city with a world-class university and excellent student experience. There are around 18,000 students within the city’s 100,000 population, creating a lively community of both UK and international students. The University of Bath ranks 8th in the UK and attracts students globally with its outstanding teaching quality, excelling in engineering, management, architecture and sports science.
The city’s compact size means city sights are easily walkable, and as you wander, you’ll feel as if you’ve just stepped into a Jane Austen novel. The entire city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, owing to its original Georgian buildings, famed Roman Baths, and picturesque rural location. Bath also ranked the third-safest university location in England and Wales in 2024, but with Bristol just 15 minutes away by train, and London 90 minutes, you can always hop into the big city when you need to.
Student Review – University of Bath
The city of Bath itself is really attractive with its Georgian architecture. I was able to find an apartment in The Circus, the round near The Royal Crescent and enjoyed my time living there. These are nice pubs, night-life, shopping including second hand, and an arty, trendy historical atmosphere. If you have a car, or road bike the surrounding countryside is very pleasant too with good pubs and beautiful scenery. I chose the University of Bath above all for the location.
The university itself is situated on top of a hill just outside the City of Bath. You can see the city lights. There are buses that go up the hill regularly. You can usually catch a lift. I think I only walked up a couple of times. There is accommodation on campus that is cheap. I stayed in campus accommodation in my first and final 4th year.
The standard of education was fine when I was there. I studied Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Some of the lecturers looked like they were simply reading notes from years ago but others were inspired and inspiring. There were lots of labs and research going on so the final year thesis was practical and motivating.
There are girls in the European studies department but in others there are not that many around. There is Bath Spa University not so far away which has a superfluity of ladies. The pump rooms and the area around the weir has great cafes for tea. The cathedral is special. The atmosphere is the selling point. After graduating I went to Edinburgh University again for the Georgian architecture, I like it that much!
Student Review – University of Bath
I’m thrilled I picked the University of Bath as my top choice. The first year living on campus is fantastic, with opportunities i have met new people and i’m still trying to exchange diverse cultures and lifestyles. The campus is not that big but that has so far created this friendly vibe, where you’re always bumping into familiar faces from classes or your residence. Ngl, the campus look a bit out of touch with current lifestyle, but the warm atmosphere and lush green spaces around it quickly make you feel at home.
5. Durham, United Kingdom (4.55/5 Rating)

Durham is a historic northern English city with serious academic prestige. Durham University is ranked third in the UK, and with over 21,000 students in a city of around 50,000 population, there’s a genuine student atmosphere. Additionally, the university’s collegiate structure, similar to the University of Oxford or Cambridge, creates tight-knit communities. Each of the university’s 17 colleges has distinct characteristics, with accommodation ranging from the Norman-era Durham Castle to modern purpose-built facilities.
The historic city centre, dominated by the magnificent cathedral and castle (both UNESCO World Heritage sites), provides a historic backdrop to student life. The River Wear’s path around the city’s peninsula offers running and walking routes, and the city itself is filled with traditional market-town character, including independent shops, cosy pubs and regular cultural events. For students seeking academic excellence, historic beauty and genuine collegiate community without Southern England’s costs, Durham offers everything Oxford and Cambridge do – at lower living costs and with a unique northern heritage.
Student Review – Durham University – DUR
This uni cares students very much, love it. Durham University is the rare place that feels both world-class and wonderfully close-knit. The setting alone is inspiring: lectures and library sessions unfold in the shadow of Durham Cathedral and Castle, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the Castle itself used by the University—so history really is part of everyday student life.
Student Review – Durham University
I’m currently a second year student studying Criminology. Overall, the programme has been an excellent fit for me and I am having the best time. My lecturers are passionate about the field and incredibly knowledgeable, with several bringing real-world research experience into the teaching, grounding the many theories we cover into practical application. As you progress through the degree programme, you are given the opportunity to cater the modules to your interests, allowing for a personal course of study that challenges you intellectually and keeps you motivated. Campus life at Durham is unlike any other university, and the collegiate system means you find friends for life from day one. Studying in such a beautiful city surrounded by hundreds of years of history is truly a privilege.
4. Coimbra, Portugal (4.63/5 Rating)

Coimbra is to Portugal what Bologna is to Italy – a historic student town with a world-renowned academic reputation. It’s home to Portugal’s oldest university, the UNESCO World Heritage-listed University of Coimbra, which welcomes almost 30,000 students each year, including students from 118 nationalities.
Walking through Coimbra feels like entering a different era – the historic university buildings, baroque Joanina Library (home to bat colonies), medieval streets and the Mondego River create memorable surroundings for your degree. Additionally, the famous student traditions, including the Queima das Fitas (burning of ribbons) festival celebrating graduation, offer unique student experiences in Portugal. The city’s dedication to students is evident everywhere – from student-friendly prices to cultural events designed around academic calendars.
Student Review – University of Coimbra – UC
I really like the University of Coimbra. Since it’s in a relatively small city, all the faculties are relatively close to each other, and it’s possible to meet all sorts of people. In addition, there are also countless opportunities for extracurricular activities.
Student Review – University of Coimbra
I have mixed feelings about my experience at UC. On one hand, they took a little too long to give me an answer about whether I got in or not, so I ended up losing a full semester. On the other hand, the people at StudentHub and in my department can be very helpful.
Dealing with paperwork and documents at the university can be extremely bureaucratic—just be ready for that. Coimbra is a student-centric city, so most activities and programs are targeted at students aged 18–21. In my opinion, if you’re older, have different tastes, or aren’t into clubbing and parties, there will be considerably fewer things to do in the city itself.
I love techno music, and if I want to listen to that kind of music, I need to go to bigger cities like Porto or Lisbon. One thing that stands out is that you can really feel the academic atmosphere at all times. Not to mention that you can find all kinds of support at the university and ESN Coimbra (for Erasmus students), which helps a lot—not only for national students but also for international ones.
3. Lausanne, Switzerland (4.64/5 Rating)

Lausanne may rank among the cities with the highest cost of living in Europe, but this picturesque lakeside city delivers academic excellence and a quality of life to match the cost, with excellent public transport, safe streets, pristine environment and an international character. The city’s primary technology institution, EPFL (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne), is ranked 22nd globally, and it’s also home to the world’s number one hospitality management institution, EHL Hospitality Business School.
Lausanne’s setting adds much to the student experience. Perched on Lake Geneva’s shores, you’re surrounded by the Alps and the Jura Mountains to the northwest, offering plenty of opportunities for weekend hikes, and visits to Geneva, Montreux or even France and Italy. The city also serves as the ‘Olympic Capital’, hosting the International Olympic Committee and over 55 international sporting associations, creating unique career opportunities in sports management, law and international relations. And while Lausanne might rank third on our list for student life, it beats all other locations with its high overall rating (4.73).
Student Review – International Academy of Sport Science and Technology – AISTS
Excellent program with a diverse set of modules to have an holistic view of the world of sports. Amazing location in the Olympic Capital which inspires all sport lovers. You are going to be surrounded by many sports federations, sport enthusiasts which translates into many events always happening.
AISTS is always helping its students and their professional development through networking with their community.
Student Review – EHL Hospitality Business School – EHL
I am currently completing my final semester at EHL, pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in International Hospitality Management, which I believe makes this the perfect moment to share a genuine student review. To begin with, EHL’s Preparatory Year (AP) was truly one of the best years of my life. Although I am naturally more introverted, I was able to meet many people with whom I shared meaningful experiences, and who significantly influenced my personal and professional journey. Student life at EHL has been equally enriching. The wide variety of committees, ranging from sports to mixology, provided opportunities to explore new interests, networking, and develop soft skills outside of the classroom. I also had the privilege of enjoying the many facilities on campus, such as the semi-Olympic swimming pool, which allowed me to recharge and maintain a healthy balance between academics and well-being. Throughout my bachelor’s studies, each semester introduced me to new subjects and skills that built a solid foundation, allowing me to apply knowledge to specific industry sectors, such as Hotel Real Estate Development and Planning. At present, I am taking the “Strategic Hotel Investment” elective,an intensive six-weeks course, which enables us to work on real-life projects. Guided by Professor Pascal Bichon’s “learning by doing” approach, we work on weekly cases and present our work to industry experts, whose feedback supports continuous learning and improvement. Beyond the classroom, I was able to put theory into practice through two internships, which provided me with first-hand exposure to industry systems and operations, even before completing my degree. Overall, EHL has shaped me both academically and personally. It has been an invaluable experience, and if I had the chance to start over, I would do it all again without hesitation.
2. Leeds, United Kingdom (4.66/5 Rating)

Leeds is ranked the fifth-best student city in the UK, but according to our reviewers, it deserves second place. Well-known in the UK for its vibrant student life (including nightlife), excellent universities, and affordability, this Yorkshire city can more than hold its own against larger UK student destinations like London and Edinburgh.
Students consistently praise Leeds’ perfect balance between serious study and an exceptional social life, with multiple festivals, countless bars and clubs, a thriving music scene, and over 400 student societies, ensuring there’s always something happening. The city’s location in Yorkshire means you can combine big-city attractions with easy access to stunning countryside and historic towns, including Harrogate and York. For students wanting a quintessential British university experience with northern friendliness, genuine career prospects and affordable costs, Leeds is unbeatable.
Student Review – University of Leeds
For me, Leeds truly ticks every box. It is one of those cities that manages to balance everything perfectly, from an exciting city lifestyle to a lively social scene and a strong academic reputation. There is always something going on, whether it is live music, art, food festivals, or nights out with friends. The city feels full of energy but still has that welcoming, friendly atmosphere that makes it easy to feel at home.
As a student, I have found Leeds to be the ideal place to study. The universities have great facilities and a real sense of community, and there is always support available when you need it. I love that everything is within walking distance, from the campus to the shops, bars, and cafes, which makes day-to-day life simple and enjoyable.
It is also a city that encourages independence and growth. Living and studying here has helped me become more confident, outgoing, and open-minded. Whether it is exploring the city, meeting new people, or taking advantage of new opportunities, Leeds offers something for everyone. I honestly could not recommend it enough. It is a city that perfectly combines opportunity, fun, and belonging.
Student Review – University of Leeds
The University of Leeds has such a welcoming vibe. From day one, I felt part of a community. The support from both staff and students is amazing, and there’s always someone around to help if you’re stuck. Lectures are interesting, and the teaching staff genuinely care about how you’re doing. Plus, the city itself is great for students—there’s loads to do, and everything’s really student-friendly.
1. Lyon, France (4.73/5 Rating)

Lyon claims the top spot as Europe’s ultimate hidden gem student city! The third-largest city in France is home to a thriving culinary scene, stunning architecture, and top academic institutions – there’s a reason it’s one of France’s top student cities. Plus, students can access specialised education at institutions such as École Normale Supérieure de Lyon (ranked globally for sciences), INSA Lyon (engineering), and emlyon business school (management).
Lyon’s setting at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône rivers creates a distinctive character – the Renaissance-era Old Town (UNESCO World Heritage), the vibrant Presqu’île district, the modern Confluence quarter, and the surrounding hills provide varied neighbourhoods each with a unique atmosphere. Meanwhile, students can dive into Lyon’s culinary scene at costs far lower than in Paris, trying famous dishes like quenelles, salade lyonnaise and praline tarts. For students seeking an authentic French university experience with outstanding academics, incredible food and liveable costs, Lyon delivers everything Paris promises – just actually affordable and accessible.
Student Review – emlyon business school
Located near the center of Lyon which allows for easy commute and proximity to stores/restaurants.
Amazing student life, there are events every week (sports, lunches, parties but also networking and work opportunities). Great school if you’re interested in consulting or finance as top firms come and teach classes every semester.
Some classes are online and some classes are in person.
If you come as an international student in the MIM program you cannot do exchanges internationally but there are many double diplomas to chose from. French students have the possibility to do exchanges at MIT, UCLA, Bocconi, Berkeley etc.
Student Review – emlyon business school
This university is a great place to learn about the business world. I enjoy a lot the fact that we get many classes about many differnet subject (all still business relevant). All teachers have great experience and are really qualified. The new campus in Lyon is amazing, quite comfortable with all the comodities a student could need. Overall, studying here is really agreable.
