My opinion of the University of the People is generally positive, especially when taking into account its mission and accessibility. As a virtual, tuition-free (though it does have examination fees) university, it is playing a valuable role in making higher education more accessible to people around the world who might otherwise be hindered for any number of reasons, financial, geographical, or personal. It’s a new paradigm of education democratization based on providing a quality academic core by way of peer-to-peer and dedicated teachers. It might operate in a different manner than traditional brick-and-mortar institutions, but its accreditation and its focus on traditional core academic subjects lend it credibility. What I believe is so commendable about the University of the People is its commitment to accessibility and its new paradigm for learning. The online platform provides great flexibility in that it enables students to learn from anywhere across the globe and balance their learning with work, family, or other obligations. The peer-to-peer model, where students learn a lot from one another through discussion forums and group work, generates a high level of camaraderie and promotes different ways of thinking. Not only does this make education affordable, but it also cultivates valuable communication and collaboration skills that are needed in today’s globalized world. The structured weekly learning units, clear assignments, and interactive instructors are all contributing to the constructive learning atmosphere despite the distance. With its mission, accessibility, and quality of education it provides within its innovative model, I would recommend the University of the People, especially for specific types of students. It is a great choice for very motivated, independent students who are at ease with online learning and interactions with peers. It is especially ideal for those who need flexibility because of circumstances or whose budgetary constraints make conventional university life inaccessible. Though it will not be the best choice for all, for those whose goals and needs are met by its strong points and format, the University of the People provides a sound and valuable means of earning a degree and improving their future prospects.
