History

Established in 1817 as the Baptist Education Society of the State of New York by the First Baptist Church of Hamilton, the institution had the purpose of training clergy in the Baptist tradition. However, there was a collegiate division which was separate and granted higher degrees to its students. In 1950, due to the urge of the Baptist Education Society, the university moved from Maddison, where it was originally located, to Rochester, where they were looking to build a new path and future for the university.

In that year, classes began with approximately 60 students enrolled. Until 1862, the university was located in downtown Rochester, and the college expanded its offer of programmes, as well made sure enough funds were guaranteed to have financial stability, and its student body expanded. In the following century coeducation reforms were implemented as 33 female students were admitted in 1900, and they studied separately from the male students.Show more

    Good education but costly

This is a fine college and well respected. My class sizes were very small and teachers were always available to help during office hours. Campus life is quite dull and Rochester winters are brutal and will test you. Tuition prices are extremely high and might not be worth it for every program.

    UR Review

I love going to school in UR because I was able to find a diverse circle of friends to connect with. Also, I was able to further explore some of my hobbies through their many clubs. The professors are generally good, but there are undergraduate professors who are used to teaching graduate students and it REALLY shows. I’ve also had issues with uncommunicative advisors and conflicting information about course GPAs and grades, but there’s usually another person or department that can be contacted to give correct information, so this is not is not the biggest problem. However, this school is extremely expensive and I am not entirely convinced that it is worth it. My online experience was very limited, but I had a reasonably decent experience. It took some time for the teachers to adapt to the new teaching methods, but it turned out to be quite effective. So far all my teachers have been very friendly and helpful in learning the subjects as they can in smaller classes. When you have a clear plan and purpose, college can be a wonderful place. My current suite is more comfortable and welcoming than I could have ever imagined.

Academically engaging, be patient and open

One thing to like and appreciate about the University is that the professors are truly and thoroughly well versed in their fields. It’s a 50-50 toss-up which ones are the better, more interesting lecturers, but all of them are generally very knowledgeable and friendly if you approach them for extra help outside class time. This is certainly true for Computer science classes and economics students. Student life is dominated by greek life in my opinion. A lot of people join frats or go to frat-sponsored events, especially as a freshman because they are generally the more fun, upbeat ones. And you’re more likely to have a good time with good music. But aside from Greek life, there are so many clubs it’s honestly great. Everyone can find their clique/group which can be such a plus. Food is not great though, and really depends where you go to eat. Danforth dining (or danfo) is usually the best especially if you’re a freshman, and once you live off-campus, I’d recommend having a mostly declining food plan and otherwise learning to cook for yourself. Also, the gym is alright, try and go early morning or late evening so its not too crowded.

    Good Environment, Nice Professors

Personally I recommend this school as the professors and classmates are nice here. The professors here are nice too and the courses are hard. You should work hard if you want an A here. In our courses, there are students from the US, China, Japan and even other countries. The students are friendly and you can easily make friends here. The weakness of the campus might be the weather. It is so cold here and it snows a lot in winter. The school is always covered with snow. I must say the software and facilities are not as good as I thought here. The school does not offer students personal Adobe accounts, and for most times, you can only access some software on school computers. The software’s license provided by the school does not work well, too. Overall, I like U of R and hope more students can join us. Our school is very friendly to transfer students as well and there are many transfer students each year.
