Established in 1829, Rochester Athenaeum was a literary society, which merged in 1891 with the Mechanics Institute, an institute of practical technical training, which was founded 6 years before. The name of this new institution was Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute.Show more
Some years later, in 1944, the school was renamed Rochester Institute of Technology, and it officially became a research university. The original campus was located in Rochester, New York, by the Erie Canal. However, in 1959 the New York Department of Public Works announced that a freeway was going to be built there. Therefore, the university bought a new campus in the east bank of the Genevese River, in Henrietta in 1961, and officially moved there in 1968, where it resides today.
In 1966 the university was named the site of the National Technical Institute for the Deaf, and its first students enrolled in 1968. In the following decade, the institution took over Eisenhower College and in 1990 the college started its first Ph.D. programme in Imaging Science.
Academics at Rochester Institute of Technology
Currently in 2018 the university has nine colleges which cover various disciplines, such as Health Sciences and Technology, Imaging Arts and Sciences, Science, Liberal Arts, Computing and Information Sciences, Engineering, Applied Science and Technology, and Business.
In addition, the campus has three small academic units, which do not cover the full college faculties: Center for Multidisciplinary Studies, Institute for Sustainability and University Studies.
RIT is also present in Prague, in the U.S. Business School Praha, in Croatia (Dubrovnik and Zagreb), in Kosovo, in the city of Pristina, and in Dubai as well. The university also has several international parnerships with other schools across the globe.
Student Life at Rochester Institute of Technology
Nowadays, Rochester Institute of Technology has over 150 student run clubs, 10 student associations and over 30 Greek organisations. With a very strong athletic culture, it also has great facilities for students who are athletes. There is a large presence of students with hearing disabilities, who make up around 10% of the student body. There are also various events all year long, such as the Explore Your Future and Imagine RIT, as well as student run magazines and newspapers.
Rochester Institute is a place where everyone is welcome and you can develop yourself while you build your academic path.
