    The International Student Experience

Smith College is a great college to attend. As an International student, I did not know what to expect when I first arrived on campus. They were prepared to help me transition to a new educational environment and made me feel very welcome. They had plenty of resources to aid me in adjusting but I would also recommend adding a seminar that discusses the learning styles that different countries have and how they differ from American Colleges. This would go a long way in bridging the gap and helping international students know what is expected of them.

    Community, stellar academics, fun traditions

I’ll start by saying if you’re a person of color/identify with a marginalized identity, any college or university will pose its challenges to your being. Smith is absolutely no exception. I’m Black and to survive Smith (emotionally and academically), I was active in cultural orgs (Black Students Alliance, Smith African Caribbean Students Alliance). There are a bunch. With that being said, I would choose Smith again. The small class sizes allow you to get really close with your professors (which is a must because they WILL link you to amazing internships and opportunities). I think a smaller class size also helps you be better invested in your learning experience. Also, Smith offers phenomenal classes in the humanities. Students live in houses as opposed to dorms—this makes house community really great (depending where you live…if you live in the quad the house community may not be as tight knit). Food options are plenty and accommodate different diets (there’s literally a vegan/vegetarian dining hall and it has the best food). Students have unlimited swipes. Smith also has a few really cool traditions like mountain day. This is a random day in the fall semester where our president cancels classes and you have the day to do what you want. Most people go apple picking. The town itself, Northampton, is small and cute. Lots of good food but fairly pricey. Smith is extremely rigorous and will work the hell out of you. But it’s also so rewarding. I’d recommend this college!!
