I loved that the university looks out for their students. I felt very safe during my freshman year here. Professors can be seen as intimidating, but they actually aren’t, and are very helpful inside and outside the classroom. When it comes to student life on campus I would say this is a grey area. I’m an African-American student attending a PWI, so I would love to see more people who look like me. In lectures, there were only a few Black people, and international students are kind of hard to find if you don’t join any clubs. However, there was a specific dorm on campus that housed them. There are tons of clubs on campus, any club you can think of, NCSU has it. I’ve seen some international students like the students from France who walk around campus at night. In my specific program, sport management, the lectures classes were long, but our Professor indicated to us that most of the important work would come from textbooks and message boards. That’s another thing I enjoyed was the not just retaining information in the classroom because then I would easily forget it. One of our projects required us to complete volunteer work related to sport management, which was easy to fulfill because there are loads of opportunities for students. You can either be a volunteer, intern or employed by the College of Natural Resources. Overall, my first year at NCSU has been great on the academic side. I’m glad I chose this university over others because I value the importance of education over social aspects like partying. Another thing that I also liked were parties, all of the parties were off campus and involved sororities and fraternities, but most won’t let anyone in unless you are a part of them, so this gave me an excuse to stay in and complete work or converse with my roommates. Some will say it’s hard to make friends because it’s a big campus, which is true, but the friends you make during a certain time or semester might not be the friends you keep in the end. I truly believe that any students with any type of interests will be able to find their crowd. I still haven’t found mine, but I have confidence I will.
