What Is a Computer Science Degree?

The passion for technology can lead you to choose the specialisation of Computer Science. This field has become increasingly popular in recent years, the development being so rapid that people are trying to keep up with it.

A Computer Science degree deals with the theoretical and practical foundations of information technology and computers. The scientific part merges with the practical one in various algorithms, information processing or in computational models. This specialisation often aims to study methodological processes, making representations on a computer, storage, or accessing information.

At the same time, the study of Computer Science focuses on the learning of programming languages, which are extremely important for any student. Python, C ++, Java are just a few of the programming languages that are explored in depth by students in order to solve the applications received from the faculty. Furthermore, on the labour market, programming languages are highly appreciated and integrated, being a useful tool for optimal performance of industries.

Benefits of a Computer Science Degree

The most important skill that young people learn following this degree is the use of programming languages. Once they grasp the logic of programming, they will easily be able to master the languages and build or develop WEB applications. Additional skills that are acquired can be: network design and engineering, software engineering, multimedia design. In addition, classical skills such as teamwork, leadership, problem-solving or time management are also gained by students.

According to recent studies, 6 of the 10 best jobs chosen by graduates are linked to Computer Science. These include Web Design, Computer Support Specialist, IT Operations Technician or Database Administrator. Moreover, the employment rate is favourable to the students, being over 70%. Due to the rapid advancement of technology, it is expected that the supply will grow in the future, requiring computer science specialists in any field.

Computer Science Degree Structure

To study Computer Science, students can either pursue university courses or follow courses online, depending on their availability and income. Online or outside-university courses include disciplines such as: Information Systems Management, Game Programming, Web Development, Network Fundamentals. They usually have a duration of 2 years. Although these courses provide important skills in this specialisation, students may be disadvantaged when competing with a student who has a Bachelor’s Degree. Some of the most important campuses in the world include Penn State World Campus, University of Massachusetts, Lowell (The Division of Online Learning and Continuing Education), Saint Leo University.

The Bachelor in Computer Science lasts around 3 to 4 years, depending on the university. Throughout the programme, students acquire mathematical knowledge, theoretical and practical foundation in programming. Some of the subjects discussed are: Computer Programming, Data Structures, Databases, Algorithms, Linear Algebra, Probability Theory or Statistics. These vary according to the curriculum of the university.

A Master’s program complete the students’ necessary career skills. In this way, they have a greater understanding of computing softwares, tools, packages, and computer architecture.

There are Master programs that can be followed even by those who have not undertaken undergraduate studies in Computer Science, such as those offered at the University of Birmingham for example. These programs can take either 2 to 5 years.

A PhD program is especially dedicated to those who want to research or become university professors and can last between 4 to 5 years.

    Flexible Learning with Great Value

University of the People has provided me with a flexible and affordable way to pursue my Computer Science degree. The online format makes it possible to study from anywhere, and the diverse student community offers valuable opportunities to learn from people with different backgrounds and perspectives.

The courses are well organized and encourage independent learning, critical thinking, and practical problem-solving. The discussion forums and written assignments help reinforce the course material and improve communication skills.

One area that could be improved is providing faster instructor feedback and offering more optional live sessions for students who want additional interaction. Overall, I would recommend University of the People to anyone looking for an accessible, affordable, and flexible higher education experience.

    My journey at UoPeople

Uopeople taught me how to motivate myself (intrinsically) and you can also study at your own pace.
All lectures should have videos and they should minimize the use of chatbots when answering students queries.

A Flexible Way to Study Computer Science

I am very satisfied with the opportunity to study at University of the People. I currently work as an IT Technician in a NATO environment, and because of the nature and location of my work, studying at a traditional university in my home country would be almost impossible. Polish regulations and the organisation of many programmes still do not always allow fully remote education, while travelling more than 1,000 kilometres to attend weekend classes would not be realistic.

At the same time, the cost of traditional university education in many English-speaking countries was too high for me, which previously made starting a degree abroad very difficult. UoPeople gave me a realistic opportunity to continue my education while working internationally.

I chose the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science because I want to further develop my knowledge and professional career in IT. I especially appreciate the understanding and support of the instructors, the quality and practical value of the learning materials, easy access to educational resources, and the flexibility to complete assignments within clearly defined deadlines.

Another important factor for me was that an American university degree may be recognised in Poland through the applicable international and national recognition procedures. This gives the programme additional professional value for my future career.

UoPeople requires discipline, good time management, and regular participation, but it offers a valuable opportunity for people who cannot attend a traditional university. Based on my experience, I would recommend it to motivated students who need flexible, accessible, and internationally oriented education.

    Flexible Quality Higher Education

University of the People is more than just at a college, it a community of right thinking people with good heart; that put this great initiative together to make higher education available for everyone that desires but couldn’t afford it.

Personally, one of it many unique points is the depth of her curriculum. Trust me, if I say; the curriculum have depth, it exactly that way.

    Thank you.

    brilliant

I’ll be honest — I almost didn’t apply because “tuition-free online university” sounded too good to be true. Two years later, I’m sitting here with a nearly-finished degree and genuinely don’t know where I’d be without this school.
    What I liked:
The flexibility completely changed my life. I’m a single parent, and there was no way I could commit to a rigid class schedule. UoPeople let me do coursework at 2 a.m. after my kids were asleep, and nobody blinked. The no-tuition model (you only pay small assessment fees per course) meant I could actually finish a degree without drowning in debt — something that felt impossible for years.
What surprised me most, though, was the community. Every course had a discussion forum where you had to engage with classmates from literally all over the world — I had study partners in Kenya, India, and Canada in the same term. It sounds small, but debating assignments with people from completely different backgrounds made me think differently about everything, not just the coursework.
What I’d like to see change:
The self-paced structure is a blessing and a curse. There’s very little live interaction — most feedback comes through written forum posts, not real conversations — so if you’re someone who needs a professor’s energy to stay motivated, it’s an adjustment. I also think academic advising could be more personalized. A lot of the guidance felt generic, like it was written for “the average student” rather than for me specifically.
    Bottom line:
This school isn’t going to hold your hand. It’s going to hand you the tools, get out of your way, and trust you to build something with them. For me, that trust was exactly what I needed. I came in doubting whether a “real” degree could come from an online, tuition-free school — I’m leaving knowing it absolutely can, as long as you bring the discipline to match the opportunity.

    Flexible, Affordable CS Degree

I’m completing my Bachelor of Computer Science at University of the People while working full-time night shifts in aged care in regional Australia, and honestly, no traditional university would have made this possible. The fully online, asynchronous format meant I could study around my roster instead of the other way around, and the term structure (five 9-week terms per year) kept me progressing steadily without ever feeling stuck waiting for the next intake.
The curriculum is solid and practical. Courses like Data Mining and Machine Learning, Comparative Programming Languages, and the core programming and database units gave me genuinely useful skills, and the peer assessment and discussion forum model pushed me to engage with classmates from all over the world, which added a perspective you don’t get in a lecture hall.
The affordability is the standout. Being tuition-free with only assessment fees, I finished a full accredited degree for a fraction of what any comparable program would cost, with no student debt. For anyone who is self-motivated and disciplined, that trade-off is unbeatable.
It’s not for everyone — you need to be self-driven, as there are no live lectures and support is mostly asynchronous, and the peer grading system occasionally requires patience. But if you can manage your own time, the quality of what you learn is entirely up to the effort you put in. I’m graduating with a 3.83 GPA (Magna Cum Laude) while never missing a shift at work, and I’m now using this degree as a stepping stone into postgraduate study. I’d recommend UoPeople without hesitation to working adults, migrants, and anyone who needs education to fit around real life.
