Studying PPE at York has been challenging as the course itself is not very interdisciplinary. That said I have recieved tailored choices to study a broad variety of modules allowing every PPE degree to be different. York itself has a great community aspect established through the college system and I highly recommend getting as involved as possible such as through college committee, college sport and living in halls – all of which I took part in.
View moreKeeping in mind that covid was a disruptor in the university experience for me, I would say that the course of politics at York was overall very good. The range and teaching of modules was good, the readings were interesting and the workload was not overwhelming. I would say that the social aspect of the university was not great. Again, this may have been because of Covid disruptions, but the environment did not feel the most warm and inclusive. There are also issues with the university as a whole and within the politics department concerning diversity and inclusion. This includes a lack of awareness of racial and gender politics included in compulsory modules, meaning that an individual can do a whole politics degree without confronting some of the most crucial political issues today : race and gender inequality. This was one of the most concerning things about my experience at York, I came across a lot of students who seemed to lack sensitivity with those issues, and some staff who did not seem particularly interested when I raised those concerns. I am aware that for some students, this made their time at university and in seminars less comfortable.
View moreI had a great time at York, meeting plenty of new people and getting involved with various academic and non-academic activities. York is a great city, with plenty to do for young people; even if it’s too small then you have Leeds on your doorstep, Newcastle for nightlight and Manchester and London 70 and 110 minutes away by train respectively. My only criticism would be the lack of tailored guidance from the careers department. Being in the field of economics, it is important to apply for roles early; even starting applications for insight programmes in your first year. I was very lucky that I got involved with student-led activities, to help me with this. I would rate the student-led support as amongst the best nationally, but this is as a result of the gaps in the university careers department itself.
View moreI really enjoy my course, and all of my lectures and seminar tutors are really helpful and knowledgeable. The campus is really nice, and I love all the wildlife on campus. The uni needs to put more funding towards mental health as that is something which is lacking. The uni is also keen to promote sustainability, yet continues to invest in fossil fuels so in my view divestment is key to York maintaining its view as a sustainable university. Accommodation is also quite expensive – even the cheap options aren’t particularly cheap.
View moreYork is fab, campus vibe is super chill. Not a huge city but extremely safe and friendly. Nightlife could be better but the people make it great. Loads of bars and pubs – if you come make the most of them. Finding my course interesting.
View moreThis is a fantastic university. It has a fantastic reputation and lives up to this reputation. The city itself is overwhelmingly incredible. With the minister and city walls among many other things it is absolutely beautiful. It is close to Leeds and Newcastle, despite being a smaller city it is surrounded by many other amazing cities with great connections to both the north and the south. The university itself is wonderful. The collegiate system is a wonderful way to meet people. There is an incredible sense of rivalry as well as a very warm and homely feeling. It is not only where you love but the sports you play, the friends you make and the family you have. I study Politics which ranks one of the highest across the country. I cannot criticise this subject at all. It is very interesting where in first year I studied compulsory modules which ranged from economic, to American politics and political philosophy. It was a fantastic basis which I chose my second year subject upon. The choices were diverse and intensely interesting. After just finishing my second year I can not recommend Politics at York enough. It is above and beyond what I expected it to be. The lecturers are all so caring and always have time for feedback or questions. York is a fantastic city and university which has been fantastic for me and I’m sure will be fantastic for anyone who is lucky enough to find themselves there.
