I’m currently studying Psychology at the University of Bristol and have really enjoyed the academic side of my degree. The course covers a wide range of topics, so there is a great balance between learning about different areas of psychology and developing a deeper understanding of how psychological research is conducted.
One of my favourite aspects has been the practical research experience. We have opportunities to design studies, collect and analyse data and develop skills using programmes such as R and Excel. I’ve found this particularly useful because it has helped me develop skills that extend beyond psychology, including critical thinking, data analysis and communicating research findings.
The course is academically challenging, but I have found that there are lots of opportunities to develop independently and explore areas that interest me. The teaching and resources have given me a strong foundation, while the wider university environment makes it easy to get involved outside of your course.
Student life is also a major part of the Bristol experience. There are a huge number of societies, sports clubs and events, so there are plenty of ways to meet people and find things you enjoy outside your degree. Bristol itself is a particularly fun city to be a student in, with lots of independent cafés, restaurants, shops and green spaces, as well as a very active student community.
Overall, I would recommend Bristol to students who want a challenging degree alongside a lively university experience. Like any university, it takes some time to adjust and become comfortable with a new environment, but there are plenty of opportunities to make the experience your own.
