I couldn’t have wished for a better experience than the MSc program I’m enrolled in at the University of Sheffield. Although it was intellectually demanding—which is what I was hoping for, the university offered activities and events to maintain a healthy balance between academic and social life. As an international student, I think Sheffield University provides excellent assistance for your well-being and absorption into a new nation.
View moreStudying Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering at The University of Sheffield as an international student has been a wonderful experience. I decided to attend The University of Sheffield because of the parks in the city (I love taking walks, having a cookout or just a relaxing day, lying on the grass in the park so it was a major factor) and the university boasts of its Automatic Control and Systems Engineering department and I must say I am not disappointed.
I am currently in my first year and so far, the subject of everything I have been taught is control and electronic systems, which I expected because this is the basics of mechatronics. Most of my classes are held in the diamond which is an amazing looking building inside and out with lots of labs, study spaces (both silent and group), media rooms, lecture halls, a restaurant etc. My labs are mostly control systems labs which are done with models made with The NI Engineering Laboratory Virtual Instrumentation Suite coupled with MATLAB/SIMULINK. Additionally, I think the teachers are great, they give constructive feedback on assignments/questions, and their classes are interesting. The university also has a career service, Career Connect, that offers career advice, helps you zhuzh up your CV and increase your employability.
Furthermore, there are so many extra-curricular activities, clubs, and student-led projects. And do not get me started on the nightlife, there is so much to do. Let’s not forget the accommodation, there are so many options depending on what you can afford and your personal preference. If you decide to stay at a university-owned accommodation, there is a wellbeing service, Residence Life, which hosts events and opportunities to make your time at the accommodation more enjoyable and memorable.
Another thing I love about The University of Sheffield is its Student Union, it is inclusive, it organizes lots of activities like club night/gigs at Foundry, Give it a Go, fundraisers, societies and so many more. However, I think Foundry could organise more afrobeat/bashment club nights and events. And for my fellow food lovers, there are so many restaurants that serve international and local cuisine. Additionally, in the city centre, you can buy international and local spices to try out different recipes. Lastly, if you are an international student like me and you are concerned about diversity or you have a disability and you are worried about fitting in, you have nothing to be worried about. There are so many international students here, the school is pretty inclusive and all you have to do is be your best self.
To sum up, I think The University of Sheffield is an amazing place to start the next chapter of your life and if you are planning on attending, I am sure you would have a lovely experience.
I studied Mechanical Engineering at Sheffield University. Although the course was challenging and the workload was intense, I found that the course content was delivered at a manageable pace and the support given by the staff was excellent. University nightlife and facilities are very good. Lots to do for all types of people. I made some great friends easily, everyone is very friendly. I would definitely go back here if I could afford another degree!
