Sheffield Hallam University offers practical modules which helped me gain an insight of different areas of Psychology throughout my three years. The staff is really approachable and keen to help and seminars helped me understand lectures material in depth applying it to real life scenarios. There is also a large community of societies and sports which is worth taking part. A lot of support is provided to students and international students helping them settling to life in the UK through the International Experience Team which I worked for a year. I couldn’t recommend Sheffield more as it’s the ideal city for studying and having a great time!
View moreUnfortunately, I have had a very negative experience at University. After much excitement in the build-up to starting my first year, I was ultimately let down. My first year amounted to around 3 months. This was due to a combination of factors. Such as 6 weeks’ worth of strikes, the majority of December off University due to holidays, and then in late January, the Covid-19 pandemic took hold. The extremely limited time I had to attend lectures or seminars at Sheffield Hallam University proved to be of very low quality. After moving in for 2nd year, I was shocked to be placed in an empty flat by myself during the lockdown. This proved to be difficult and strenuous on my mental health. The course proceeded online via zoom calls etc. However, I struggled with loneliness and mentally. With limited knowledge from 1st year and external issues, I fell behind. With little to no aid, I struggled and failed a lot of my year. There was hardly any communication between the University and myself. I have just re-taken my 2nd year, and again, the University staff seem distant.
View moreTeaching went well until covid started then as it all moved online I think teachers got lazy as this is still how they are teaching most of the time when it is unnecessary. The assessments are nice and straightforward though.
View moreThe course itself has valuable information and interesting modules however the way the course has been taught was greatly effected by covid making it difficult to learn as lots of it has been cancelled or put online.
View moreThe overall program was great however due to Covid-19 some things made it much more tricky, especially in terms of communication. On the plus side though when you reached the right person for help you always got the support you needed so that was fantastic!
View moreOverall, I enjoyed my time at Sheffield Hallam University and experienced many pros. One of the main things I can praise is the student support service in the faculty of psychology sociology and politics. As someone who struggles with their mental health, I received a lot of support through this service and they constantly catered to my needs, I don’t believe I would’ve graduated without them. I also found that some of the lecturers were very helpful, in particular my final year dissertation tutor that helped me through this stressful time. Although I would say my experience at Hallam was positive, I do believe that the psychology intake is very large which made lectures a bit hectic and access to help a bit harder.
View moreOverall, when on campus the course was delivered well, quite a good amount of support and accessibility to staff and support anytime, when this transitioned to online learning due to strikes and covid pandemic, this became a bit more difficult as the support was limited and emails took a lot longer to reply.
View moreThe university as a whole is in an amazing city, it’s student-friendly and easy to get about. The courses offered are brilliant and ideal as have a wide scope of different modules to choose from. In terms of being there for student, this current academic year has been affected majorly due to strikes and COVID. Lecturers have been non-responsive and difficult to contact when learning from a distance. Students have been expected to essentially teach themselves this year and it’s been very unorganised.
