What Is an Economics Degree?

Are you passionate about the business and finance sector? Do you follow the national and international news? Then, an Economics degree is the answer. It has always been one of the most sought-after degrees amongst youth.

Economics degrees are designed to tackle all the issues that have an impact on financial situations, ranging from production to how resources are used. Candidates are trained to understand how the economy suffers fluctuations based on the market’s needs and wants followed by the market’s supply and demand.

By far one of the most crucial elements is that economics is divided into microeconomics and macroeconomic. Microeconomics deals with the economic behaviour at an individual level (companies, buyers, sellers and others), whilst macroeconomics illustrates the bigger picture, on a national or global scale (unemployment, economic growth, inflation and so on).

Benefits of an Economics Degree

Having an economics degree increases anyone’s chances to find a job, regardless of the field. This is mainly due to the fact that graduates hold many transferable abilities, such as analytical and problem-solving skills, that are suitable for any career.

A study made by the London School of Economics and Political Science showed that graduates from an economics course have a starting salary of £33,000 per year. Having a job in the field right after graduation is a major positive aspect and comes with a lot of opportunities for career advancement.

Economics Degree Structure

Economics degrees are usually a three years commitment and sometimes are offered as part of a joint degree. This means that Economics can be studied along with another subject such as engineering, management, law, computer science and others.

This degree can be found either as a Bachelor of Science (BSc) or Bachelor of Arts (BA). The BSc focuses more on economical theory and statistical techniques, while BA is combined with social sciences and qualitative modules.

University of Essex (Management & Marketing)

I am currently studying Management and Marketing at the University of Essex, and overall my experience has been positive and engaging, particularly in terms of course content and practical learning.

    Course (Management & Marketing):
The course offers a good balance between management theory and marketing practice. One of the highlights for me was completing a social marketing campaign as part of a module, where we worked on applying marketing concepts to real-world scenarios. This helped develop my teamwork, research, and creative thinking skills, and made the learning feel much more relevant to future careers. The mix of individual assignments and group work prepares you well for professional environments.

    Teaching quality:
Most lecturers are knowledgeable and supportive, and they are generally approachable if you need clarification or extra help. Teaching materials are well organised and available online, which is particularly helpful as a student who does not live on campus. Seminars and workshops are especially useful for discussion and applying lecture content, although teaching styles can vary between modules.

    Career support:
The university provides access to career services, including CV advice, employability workshops, and career guidance appointments. While some opportunities require you to actively seek them out, I have found the support helpful when planning for internships and thinking about future career paths within marketing and management.

    Student life:
Although I don’t live on campus, I’ve still been able to enjoy student life at Essex. There are lots of societies, events, and social opportunities available, and the campus has a friendly and diverse atmosphere. Commuting can sometimes make spontaneous socialising harder, but there are still plenty of ways to get involved if you make the effort.

    Pros:

Practical modules such as social marketing campaigns that build real-world skills

Supportive lecturers and well-organised online resources

Diverse student community with a wide range of societies and events

    Cons:

Teaching quality and engagement can vary depending on the module

Commuting students may need to plan more to fully engage in campus activities

Overall, I would recommend the University of Essex to students looking for a course that combines academic learning with practical marketing experience, especially those who are proactive and willing to make the most of the opportunities available.

    Second Year Student

I have had the privilege of being a student at the University of Essex, and my experience over the past year has been both enriching and transformative. The faculty members are not only experts in their respective fields but are also passionate about imparting knowledge. The diverse range of programs and courses offered caters to a broad spectrum of interests and has been extremely helpful in both progressing educationally and as an individual. One of the most appealing aspects of the University of Essex is its vibrant and diverse community, as a minority this is a great fundamental aspect.

Essex is a great place to study

After only a few semesters at the university, I’m amazed at how many chances, support, and assistance the university has provided. My main difficulty is that this is the largest university campus I’ve ever visited, and even with aid and a guide, I get confused trying to find new classes; I’m hoping next year will be easier. Couldn’t have asked for a finer course and department in terms of blended learning, possibilities, and collaborations.

    MA Essex University

I studied an MA in Economics, an interesting course. The course was challenging, enjoyable and thought-provoking. It enabled me to look at the world from a different perspective. It is definitely a course I would recommend to others interested in economics without a background in that area. The lecturers were kind, pleasant and approachable. They ensured that we understood the material before moving forward. They encouraged questions and made lessons interactive. It was of great pride to be taught by lecturers who are renowned worldwide.

Having prior degrees, I have had the privilege of using other university libraries, however, I was particularly fond of the Essex university library (Yes I actually did study lol). The librarians offered an uncommon seminar to postgraduate students, addressing how to identify valid papers that are pertinent to your dissertation. Furthermore, we were able to book meetings on a one to one basis in which a particular librarian was dedicated to a school and helped in finding papers that can be used for your dissertation. The assistance in research was of great help when writing the dissertation. The social life of the university was rich. Students were friendly and the atmosphere was warm. The highlight for me, in particular, was meeting and interacting with students from all over the world. This was enjoyable, intriguing and eye-opening. Rubbing minds with people from different cultures, different perspectives and different mindsets was an unforgettable experience.

The downside was the timetable schedule, the changes could be sudden and living off-campus, last-minute changes were incredibly inconveniencing. In addition, locating the rooms for lectures is not the easiest of tasks. The university has unique geography and layout that requires time to familiarise yourself with. For a student studying for multiple years, this is not much of an issue however, for a single year master’s student, by the time you’re accustomed to the layout, it’s time to graduate. Nonetheless, as I mentioned previously, both students and staff alike are approachable and willing to help when needed. This does alleviate the difficulty.

In conclusion, I would definitely recommend the university and the course to other prospective students.

    University of Essex

I think my program(business economics) provides its students with various methods of acquiring knowledge whether it’s through workshops or seminars. Professors in this program are very knowledgeable and skilled in what they do. Also, they are willing to help students with their academic struggles and help them achieve their goals. As the university of Essex welcomes students and professors from all over the world it has a very good reputation regarding its diversity. Multicultural

First of all, I would like to highlight that the University is built in an amazing location – just a few minutes away from the famous Wivenhoe park. The structure of the university is unique as well; it is divided into several squares, where you can find everything from lectures halls, study areas, restaurants and leisure areas.
University has its own accommodation, which is super close to the university as well – always a plus especially when you want to sleep as long as possible.

When it comes to the quality of studies itself, as a person who did both BA and MSc at this uni, I can confirm that the lecturers are the top specialists in their field! Moreover, the University of Essex is known for its emphasis on quantitative methods, which is highly valued among employers.

Overall, this is uni is great for a person who wants to experience various multicultural backgrounds, amazing student life and get an outstanding degree!

    Decent uni

At Essex uni, the Lecturers and campus are very good. Facilities are good and silberrad is very useful. The biggest letdown is living in Colchester. Not a great area as there is very little to do and is a bit dodgy

    International university

Overall a good university with a wide variety of nationalities. Professors are good in general, but the grading system is very bad as the feedback provided is usually very vague. Accommodations are really good and reasonably priced.
