Although lacking focus on extracurricular activities, sufficient emphasis is made on academics with a highly competitive environment and extremely qualified faculty. A bit more work on smooth and open communication, especially about rules, regulations and options available, is needed. Accommodation is severely lacking.View more
Located in the heart of Ankara, METU offers a campus experience like no other. From state of the art research labs to top notch sports facilities, METU truly utilizes the mammoth 11000 acre campus it boasts.
As a Chemical Engineering major, I not only had professors from reputable global universities, but also, I got to work under the tutelage of highly professional, leading scientists in the form of undergraduate research projects. Since METU is primarily a Technical University, there is almost always some project going on, for those interested in research. You can also start your own projects, should there be no ongoing ones that are in line with your interests. Additionally, there is a massive research center (METU Technopolis/Teknokent) connected to the main campus where several leading research companies and start-ups have set up shop. Although not easy for foreign students, it definitely is possible to work there as a part time/full time intern.
Brilliant academics and facilities aside, the university has multiple sports complexes, gymnasiums, playing fields and even a stadium where you will always find people relaxing and taking a breather from the hectic academic life. There are multiple cafes spread out across the campus, including a mini shopping mall, so essentially everything you need will be within the campus. Should you, however, want to go off campus, there are plenty of public transport service points within the campus. The walks from the central campus to the gates, although somewhat long, are very scenic and very refreshing courtesy of the artificial forests.
Unlike most universities in Turkey, METU has on campus accommodation too, should one choose to stay there. Although relatively cheap, they are a bit small, and provide very basic necessities. That said, there are 20 dormitories (each with a capacity of roughly 300) with several different room configurations, so you can choose the kind of room you would prefer.
For students interested in extra curricular activities, METU has a plethora of societies, clubs and sports teams which are very welcoming of new participants. However, most of these activities require at least a basic level of the Turkish Language, due to which these clubs and societies vastly lack foreign students. The university has very limited quotas for foreign students, which make them a very tiny proportion of the student body. As a result, the university severely lacks internationality, and although a lot of students can speak English, for one to truly merge into the student body and be accepted, they need to be able to speak the language.
All in all, at METU, you have a world of opportunities, should you be willing to step outside your comfort zone. Be warned though, with an acceptance rate under 10%, METU accepts only the crème de la crème, which makes it a highly competitive environment, ideal, for those who thrive under pressure!View more
I really love the campus METU has. It is very big and it is surrounded by forests which makes me feel closer to nature. I live in a dorm that is inside the campus (which is very practical and cheap for a student) and if I want I can easily live without going outside the campus for a really long time.
I’m happy with the facilities like the cafeteria and the library. The cafeteria offers meals 2 times a day for a really cheap price and the library is open 24/7 on the finals week. The only problem is that the capacity for these facilities is inadequate. Also, I think it would be better if the buildings are renewed.View more
Turkey compared to its competitors in terms of university graduates find it easier to do business. It deserves another plus with its social activities on campus. But I do not think that education is sufficient. For the second time as a student studying a bachelor’s degree at METU, I still can’t speak English properly. Although I can use academic English, I cannot use it in everyday life. For this, non-graded (because note anxiety causes stress and hinder speech) I think there should be lessons with speaking tables. Another issue related to education is the lack of practical courses. The level of knowledge remains theoretical in most sections. It is very good to have internship opportunities or practical courses arranged by more universities. Another subject, teachers. In general, they like to help students, but of course, there are those who do not. Also I think there is very weak career guidance. Graduates find jobs with their own means.View more
METU is METU because of its campus – the campus not as a physical entity but as a place of thought, art, socialising. A place of great diversity and consequently a great flourishing space to widen your horizons, METU is not prominent solely because of its wonderful instructors and professors (who are, truly, magnificent most of the time) but also because of its student profile. This campus enables many students of many backgrounds come together and thus change their perspectives in their lives; METU is also a place to change your life. You CAN start yoga, climb a mountain. Drinking wine on sunny spring afternoons under a tree can be your go-to activity. You can spend HOURS cramming in the library the night before a final, but still, it does not feel so bad as lying on the couch at your parent’s house. It has an air of… dream-y teenage life. It does change your daily routine, and well, your life. The only problem nowadays is the crowd (library is full during midtermsView more
If you are expecting a nice and big campus, lots of student communities and having a nice time while you are in school Metu is great. But as a psychology student I can say that some of the professors are not competent and content of the lectures are often insufficient.View more
Academic staff is competent. There are lots of campus facilities. Education is satisfactory. available areas are not adequate for total number of students. Education system is aimed to inform students about diverse fields of the discipline.View more

Studies are extremely challenging and will give you a tough time
As an international student, I opted for this university due to its good reputation in my country and the cultural proximity of our countries. Mostly, it has been a rewarding experience as far as education is concerned. However, regarding the social life on campus for international students, there is barely any to be found. Every single student club and society is Turk dominated; no surprise there. Career fairs and other extracurricular seminars and exhibitions et cetera are all conducted in the Turkish language, with no regard given to the plea of the internationals. The internationals have their own society wherein they help each other out, which is commendable. Be that as it may, more regard should be given to the needs of international students if the university wants to continue to claim its status as an international university.View more
In the biology department, undergraduate courses focus more on theory than on experimental techniques. However, there are excellent lab courses that one can take in their 3rd and 4th years.
In my experience the most active lab in the department is the limnology lab which participates in international projects. Anyone having an interest in limnology should absolutely consider applying here.
There are lots of societies and events for students to participate in. Not to mention the various facilities that are available to enrich the experience. The only caveat is that most of these activities are conducted in Turkish and thus a rudimentary understanding of Turkish is important to fully avail these opportunities.View more
