It is one of the best institutions in Türkiye for postgraduate education in the field of English Literature. An important aspect of studying English is to follow the latest theoretical approaches, and METU English Literature Department has helped me and other candidates a lot in this regard. The professors are very knowledgeable in their fields, and publication standards have always been high. In recent years, I think the standard of the work done in the department has also further improved, as I often see PhD theses being published by international publishers such as Routledge and Palgrave. There has also been a marked increase in the number of publications in highly indexed journals by professors and students affiliated with the department. This is in line with METU’s usual approach in general. Of course, in this respect, it is good to remember that there are higher expectations than in many other local schools; it is useful to know course and thesis periods are shaped accordingly. My experience with the department and professors has always been positive. I recommend it to candidates who are thinking of studying here without hesitation, also reminding them that the admission process is quite competitive.
View moreMy university is one of the best in Turkey and has ranked among the top 300 universities in the world. Along with its large campus, it provides an environment where highly educated academics and the most enlightened young individuals of the country come together. Studying here has always made me happy, as it continually pushes me along a path of personal development. With an estimated student population of 30,000, my university has created a unique culture that has been passed down to us over the years.
At this institution, everyone is equal, free, and intellectual. However, there are some disadvantages, but these are not related to the individuals who study or teach here. Given that Turkey is a politically volatile country, the current conservative government, which imposes its policies on citizens, leads to the marginalization of our university, which is predominantly left-wing. In recent political events, students like us were arrested, detained, and silenced during protests, which is our constitutional right. This led to the initiation of an academic boycott.
The reason I mention these disadvantages is because METU is located in Turkey, a country with a politically active environment. Nevertheless, considering its advantages and the quality of education it provides, I highly recommend my university to everyone.
View moreMy initial response to being chosen to the FLE (Foreign Language Education) programme at METU was joy, as I always wanted to study in this field; and the university did not disappoint. First of all, the programme is multifaceted in terms of content; with its courses on linguistics, literature and ELT. This eventually ensures that students are well-versed in languages and how to learn them, as well as how to teach them. Other than that, the professors and research assistants are very knowledgeable in their fields, and they work hard to assist students in the best way. However, the good experiences are not limited to the programme, since the campus is very lively and beautiful; which makes living in the campus really enjoyable. There are multiple student organizations as well, which contributes to social life. In conclusion, I would say that my experiences are very positive with both the university and the programme.
