    TiU, your international hub

Tilburg University combines academic rigor with strong student support. The administration and faculty are proactive, keeping portals updated and responding quickly to feedback. The Psychology programme is highly competitive, offering well-curated materials and plenty of peer-led study groups. While a few electives have faced scheduling or syllabus gaps, the university addresses issues promptly. Some courses—especially statistics and research methods—are challenging, but with determination and available tutoring or additional courses, they’re manageable. Overall, the university provides a supportive, well-managed environment where committed students can truly thrive.

    Practical skills

A university with traditions. Professional and fair approach to the students. Lecturers are usually well-prepared, experienced, and approachable, offering valuable insights. However, the curriculum could benefit from a stronger emphasis on practical skills and real-world applications to better prepare students for the workforce. Overall, it provides a solid foundation for academic growth.

    Good in theory

The city is quite bad to live in and ugly, on top of very expensive.
The faculty of psychology is quite okay. Studying there has given me a good theoretical base. However, I have one major complaint, which is the way the university treats students individually. The student desk is the only way to obtain official documents from them (for example, the documents I needed to apply for a Master’s degre) and aside from the difficult office hours and long wait time on the phone, I was literally told upon requesting a very necessary document “sorry, we´re not going to do that for you, it is too much work for us”. when I suggested that I could put the document together myself and then just have it reviewed and stamped by them, she said htat it wouldn´t be valid. This resulted in me not being able to apply for Masters that year and taking a gap year, which is not the impact I ever thought a clerk would have on my life. Another complaint I have that resulted in a life-changing event is about my thesis. I chose to do a systematic review (within the Clinical Track) because it interested me, and I was fully informed that the program of the systematic review was still a pilot and subject to change. My supervisor was lovely and I had a great experience with her, that left me feeling like I learned something, and I was going to get a decent grade on said thesis that would then allow me to apply for a Clinical Psychology Masters in the Netherlands. For context, up until this point in my education, I had never failed an exam or a course as I always had average to high grades and I dedicate the appropriate time and effort to my studies. My thesis, on the other hand, was rather controversial. I received the grade I expected from my supervisor (which was within the range of my grades overall), whereas the second assessor failed me on half the criteria and didn’t put in the effort to provide appropriate feedback. As the two grades were too different from each other, my thesis was reviewed by a third assessor, who just did the averages between the grades of the first two assessors and included sad faces “:(” in her feedback for my months of work, which all resulted in a grade that still hinders me in my academic progress, two years later. Upon respectfully confronting the third assessor I was offered neither an explanation nor a justification (perhaps I had been misled during the process of writing my thesis) for the feedback (which at times was completely erroneous as it contradicted published and peer reviewed literature I had consulted while while writing), and I was told that my thesis would just not be reasessed. I would not still be going on about this if it wasn’t for the fact that I was just taught the findings of my thesis (which I was told was completely wrong) while studying for the master’s degree that I did manage to get into with my grades.
To sum up, while this faculty rigurously prepares students through content and theory, the students are nothing to them.

    Great teaching and great atmosphere!

The teaching is excellent and they are very good at creating a pleasant atmosphere for the students. Especially compared to other universities they understand how to make you love the subject. A thing they could improve on is the support for housing and the bureaucracy in general that is lacking.

A green university, for those of us that get distracted

The first thing I noticed on campus is that the university is surrounded by so much greenery and is partly surrounded by a forest. Tilburg is also a much quieter city than Amsterdam, Rotterdam, etc, and there isn’t a ton of nightlife, although there will always be parties to go to if you know where to look. But this is precisely why the university is a good fit for someone like me, that can get very distracted very fast. The perks of Tilburg are that if you DO want to go get crazy, all you have to do is hop on the train and you can go wherever you need to, so everything is within reach but not so close that it distracts from your studies.
I also like the structure of the psychology program, where in the first year you do a basic foundation of psychology so you can learn what you like, in the second year you can pick your major and in your third year you can pick your minor (with the option of an overseas exchange). It’s also worth noting that TiU also offers some highly specific majors that most universities don’t offer.
The academic year is broken down into multiple blocks, with exams at the end of each one. This means that you are not overwhelmed with having to do exams with a year’s worth of content all at once. Most exams are 6 weeks worth of content, but sometimes it is 12 if a course goes on for 2 blocks.
The campus also has great teachers who are very friendly and approachable, a lot of student clubs that are very diverse, and great on-campus facilities.
One downside however is that a lot of students struggle to find housing so it’s imperative that you start looking as soon as possible.

Good university in not so vibrant city

Overall, I am satisfied with my choice of studies.
The psychology program is well organized. During the first year, you have all introductory courses to the majority of fields in Psychology so you can become more familiar with what suits you the most. Then during the second and third year, you can personalize your study path and basically choose the courses you want to study. Most professors have extensive experience with teaching so the courses are properly taught. Moreover, I am glad about the level of difficulty of my studies. I can say that If you are motivated to study, you will definitely pass the courses. However, here, it’s difficult to get a high grade for the course, compared to other Universities in the Netherlands, because of the strict grading rules. On the one hand, it can be seen as an advantage because it motivates you more, but on the other hand, it’s a big disadvantage for people who wants to have a good GPA to apply for a good Master’s program.
In terms of the student nightlife, in Tilburg it’s difficult to have one 🙂 However, the city is nicely connected to the larger cities in which you can find more opportunities to spend your free time.
More about the University itself, the campus is compact and well-kept. Students have access to supermarkets, restaurants, and a variety of coffee points (you need a lot of coffee during examination weeks :)). There are places to go for a walk because the campus is situated next to the forest. All university staff treat students with respect and always try to help as much as possible. Of course, there is still room for improvement.
    1. I am an international student so it was a real challenge to find the proper accommodation in Tilburg, which would not cost a ridiculous amount of money. There is nothing like a student house that is supported by the University, so you need to rent a place only from private owners.
    2. During the examination period students lack places to study. Nevertheless, there are several buildings provided to students for studying purposes, but still, that is not enough for the number of students here.
    3. Quite often my exam was scheduled during Saturdays. Personally, I think it’s not fully professional to interfere with students’ free time. However, the whole examination process is always carried out properly.
To conclude, it’s nice to study here! I believe this University will prepare me well for my future carrier path.

    Research Master

The program is well-structured and highly international. The courses are extended with international internships along with university internships.
Course coordinators are highly equipped and interested in the research master students.

    My lovely university

In my opinion, Tilburg University is one of the best not only in the Netherlands but also in Europe. It was in the list of the best 10 universities in Europe with its Business program. The university is demanding but at the same time, there are a lot of activities outside of the lecture halls.

    Really good university overall

I study Psychology (international bachelor) and it’s really cool tbh. you will definitely need to work and put in a substantial amount of effort to pass. It is not an easy university where you can just get a degree. Really good teachers (at least most of the time) and great facilities. The thing I like the most is the campus, it’s really beautiful and full of nature..etc Just before you come here to check the housing situation, because it is a huge problem and many students were camping/homeless for a long while, and even until now 4 months in to the year, some students still cant find a place.

Hey, at the moment I’m choosing between some universities in the Netherlands to study Psychology (Bachelor) and I would be really grateful if you could tell me more in detail conditions of different fields in Tilburg, like, study quality, accommodation, social life etc.
