High-level university in an amazing city

The Universidad de Sevilla requires you a lot, so you need to be prepared to suffer at some (many) points. At least, that is my experience in one of its schools, the ETSI, where I study Aerospace Engineering. Indeed, the degree I study is not easy, but some subjects have more difficulty than they should, so they can make you get anxious. But overcoming these difficulties can get the best version of yourself. Also living in a city with so much life and joy as Sevilla can help you disconnect when you need it.

    Hard work, little free time

It makes you work really hard for your grades, having to sacrifice nearly every bit of free time you have. Having a good group of friends to work with will make the experience a bit less overwhelming.

    DEDICATION

I study Aerospace Engineering in Seville, and although it is true that it is a highly valued University, I believe that the effort dedicated to the subjects is not usually reflected in the results obtained, either because they increase the difficulty in the exams, or because we do not have time to do everything that is requested.

However, there are also some of the teachers who are very good, who teach you to solve real problems and who make you like what you are studying.

Also, they give you the opportunity to belong to associations like EUROAVIA, where I have met most of my friends.

May this be your last option

I graduated in Aerospace Engineering at the Higher Technical School of Engineers of the University of Seville (ETSI), and I must say that it was one of the most disappointing and demotivating experiences I have had in my life. Although the teachers are, without a doubt, experts in their respective fields, they totally lack vocation as teachers as well as empathy and a minimum of humanity. Far from worrying about teaching his subject well, it seems that his only objective is to fail as many students as possible. It is not uncommon to reach the 5th call for many subjects. In addition, the presentations and notes have been the same for years, not to mention how poorly structured they are. Your only way to learn something is to spend the money in private academies or with the notes of other students in Wuolah.

In addition, the frequent failures and condescending attitude of the teachers instilled feelings of inadequacy and inferiority in many students. Lack of respect and insults are more than common in many teachers. During my years there I had to listen to how they told me “I didn’t know how to think” or “they doubted that I had even finished high school”.

Definitely the only good thing about this university is the city it is in. Seville is an incredible city, which anyone who has visited will love from minute 0.

The location of the university was also problematic, as it was located in an isolated area with limited access to services such as bars and shops. On the plus side, Seville is a charming city with friendly and hospitable residents, delightful weather, and affordable social establishments. In general, Seville is a comfortable place to reside, despite the unfortunate experiences I had during my stay at the university.

High level, not so many options

I have spent five years studying aerospace engineering in Seville. The level is so high and teachers are well prepared for almost every topic and subject. It seems to me that the degree needs an extra knowledge branch more focused in space and space vehicles due to the university only offer three different branches about civil and military aviation.

On the other hand, the location of the engineering school is not the best. It is far from everywhere and near to a lot of offices without a university environment.

Beautiful Place but High level and bad location

The University of Seville has several degrees and departments. Focus on the ETSI (Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería), it includes many types of enginnering degrees, but its location has a bad place in my opinion, because people need to go there by car, bus (linea C1-C2 is the unique that take you there) or bike, because ETSI is away from many places of the city.

Focusing in Aerospace Engineering (at ETSI) I could say that it could be one of the most difficult degrees in Spain, but, during the season, ETSI offers you several activities which you can participate, so you can know several things about the Aeroespace Area here in Seville.

In contrast, I would like to tell that Seville is a beautiful city and if you study here you really fall in love with the city and its residents.

    High difficulty level

The University of Seville proposes many different engineering degrees at the ETSI (Escuela Tecnica Superior de Ingenieria). This school is well known in Spain for being one of the most difficult ones, especially for the Aerospace Engineering bachelor’s degree and the Aeronautics Engineering master’s degree.

These both programmes are high time demanding, which has both, good and bad things. On the good side, this allows students getting to better think and learn how to solve problems, which can be useful in our future careers as engineers. However, difficulty is often mistaken with quality, and some professors (more than some actually) tend to increase and increase this difficulty without realizing that their students are actually not learning at all.

On the other hand, the location of the school of engineering is not the best, but it not the worst either. It is at 20 minutes by foot from the city center although only one bus line (C1-C2) gets you there, so you are probably to use more than one bus or even the car or bike if you don’t live in the exact path of the bus.

Opportunities and recognition, but prepare for working hard

You can expect to find great opportunities coming to this university. Professors with impressive backgrounds, top-level projects are held at the university and exchange programs can be done with many top European universities. Regarding the courses, the problem is that information is not always clear and we usually rely on previous students’ notes and solved exercises to find the information. Exams are hard and passing subjects with 5/10 is already a success. Student life is poor due to the high workload. Only a few courses are taught in English and in them, translated material is not always available. However, overall, I must say that work pays off and a wide professional range opens when studies are finished.

    Worst experience ever

I studied for my bachelor’s in aerospace engineering at the Engineering school of the University of Sevilla. It was the worst experience of my life. Professors are exceptionally good at their field however they are lousy teachers. They try to increase their ego thinking that as more student fails their subject the better professors they are. It is not strange to fail the same subject for 3 consecutive years.

Of course, this is my personal experience and I do not know about other faculties. But in general, I think It is an old-fashioned university, with old school professors that need to modernize their teaching methods. In general, the teaching program is super theoretical with so few practice sessions. Thus once you finish your studies you have 0 knowledge about the real world of work. Moreover is very common to have a feeling of inferiority because during a lot of years you have failed every single exam or you have heard how professors insulted you and laughed at you.

It is also weird that you can finish your bachelor’s without expending extra years on that university. Something that is very profitable for the university itself because every year that you have to register to a subject that you have fails you have to pay double of taxes than the previous year.

As a result, you acquire a huge knowledge about lots of different fields thus you become a great professional but not thanks to the university nor their professors but because of the huge amount of time that you will invest in the library or looking for understandable notes in Wuolah. However not everything is bad, your classmates will help you always giving you material that will help you to survive in that place.

Moreover, the location of the university is not so good since is isolated from the rest of the city so there are no bars or shops around. However, Sevilla is a wonderful city that I truly love. People are always friendly and welcoming. The weather is great so sitting in a Terraza is amazing at any season. Bars are also good and cheap and in conclusion, Sevilla is a very comfortable city to live in.

I’m studying the Master’s just as a result of circumstances but it was never my plan. I studied the Bachelor’s some years ago and it was a nightmare. The Master’s is a little bit better since you can choose different subjects and avoid some problems.

Attending lessons is not worth it, professors are highly experienced investigators but most of them have no vocation as a teacher: Wuolah will be your best friend if you decide to study here. Apart from that, subjects are developed as a sum of projects, exams and practices, thus you need to be 100% time student and a high compromise: forget to combine studies and work if your goal is getting the title in 2 years.

If you want to know my opinion about the city, it is just the best place you can live. I would like a good job here (what it is difficult if we compare it with Europe) and I live in Sevilla forever. People are great, the weather is amazing, you can find a lot culture offer, you can go for a walk on Guadalquivir bank…
