Aquaculture Research Unit(ARU) @UL the best

My time at the Aquaculture Research Unit (ARU) at the University of Limpopo has been nothing short of exceptional. As a postgraduate student passionate about freshwater aquaculture, I found ARU to be the perfect environment for both academic growth and practical skill development.

The facilities at the ARU Experimental Farm provided a hands-on experience that went far beyond textbook knowledge. I had the opportunity to work closely with indigenous species like tilapia and catfish, learning about hatchery management, water quality monitoring, fish nutrition, and inland fisheries management.

The academic leadership at ARU is outstanding. Dr. Esau Mbokane, the late Nr Johan Theron and Prof. Mmaditshaba Rapatsa-Malatji were incredibly supportive and approachable. Their mentorship, deep knowledge, and passion for sustainable aquaculture practices inspired me every step of the way. They encouraged innovative thinking, and their real-world projects like using insect-based proteins in fish diets gave me exposure to cutting-edge research that felt meaningful and impactful.

I also appreciated how the unit emphasized community development and conservation. It made me realize that aquaculture is not just about farming fish, but also about supporting food security, environmental sustainability, and rural development.

Overall, studying at the ARU gave me the confidence, practical skills, and research experience I needed to take the next step in my aquaculture career. I highly recommend it to anyone who is passionate about freshwater aquaculture, sustainability, and making a real difference.
