What is a Management degree?

A Management degree builds a strong foundation in a wide variety of fields including business, finance, economics and marketing. It develops students’ understanding of business practices, structures, business theory, business strategy and research as well as global economies and financial markets. Doing a Management Degree also allows students to gain skills that enable them to work with financial and numerical data effectively.

Management degrees cover different managerial roles, such as Human Resource (HR) management, hospitality management, innovation management, operations management, etc. They can be specialized into one of the areas mentioned above or follow a more general approach that covers most of these areas.

The range of management degrees is huge and includes Business Management, Management, Marketing Management, etc. They are predominantly offered in the business departments/business schools/management schools of different universities.

Benefits of a Management degree

One of the main benefits of this degree is that Management is a broad discipline, which keeps students’ career options open.

Management degrees could have a very practical focus, which is an opportunity for students to gain experience in the process of completing their degree before having started their professional careers. Management courses usually offer work placements and practical modules, which include business simulations and business creation in a simulated environment. Acquiring practical experience through these opportunities could make students stand out from the crowd in the job market once they graduate. Research-oriented Management degrees also exist for those who prefer the theoretical aspects of such a degree. Most courses, however, have established a good balance between theory and practice in order to meet the needs of all students.

Management degrees also prepare students to serve the managerial role across a wide range of areas, including HR management, hospitality management, innovation management, operations management, etc. Students can specialize in one particular area or focus on gaining knowledge across all of these areas thanks to the high availability of different management courses.

Additionally, there is a high demand for management professionals in the contemporary business world. Therefore, taking a management course is an opportunity for students to kick-start their careers and occupy a higher position in the organizational hierarchy.

management degree Structure

Management courses usually begin by introducing students to different areas covered by the managerial role, such as organizational management, business environment, statistics, accounting and finance, business growth, etc. After the first year, institutions allow students to explore the management discipline into more depth by delivering specialized modules and offering optional modules, which enable students to choose subjects that interest them the most and are most relevant to their career aspirations.

I finished my 1st year in a management degree and I absolutely loved it! People are so nice that your heart will literally melt and there is a great deal of help among the students. As for internationalization, we receive annually several students of erasmus. The location is amazing because is near to Baixa-Chiado and bars if you would like to go out on a Friday night with your friends.

I really like the infrastructures of my university. However, I think that we could improve the green spaces at the campus. Also, the professors could use more modern methods of teaching and the programmes of the courses could be adapted to the different needs of students.

So I’m taking a bachelor’s degree in management at ISEG. Here you can take bachelor’s degrees, masters and PhDs. Overall the environment at the university is very friendly and modern, the professors are good but not very accessible… And also the fact that the university is the capital of Portugal, there’s a lot of opportunities you can take outside of it.

Good classes and good Academic spirit

This university combines both aspects of university life pretty well. It has very good teachers that you want to go to classes, it has a good evaluation system although it still needs a lot of improvements and at the same time it has a good academic spirit where a good part of the students love to be in ISEG, just passing time, studying, partying or watching our sports team play.

ISEG (my faculty) Well organised university with the high level of study. Some might see it as too hard to pass the exam but with the appropriate attitude and hard work, it is possible.

ISEG- Lisbon Schoolf of Economics and Managment

Hello! My name is Bernardo and I am a student at ISEG. Overall I enjoy a lot studying at my university. We have great teachers and a good environment. We have a lot of organizations, which make you able to obtain great skills. There is only one problem in my point of view , economics school is far away from all other schools of our university. Lisbon school of economics and Management is one of the best schools in Portugal and the oldest one!

According to QS World University Ranking 2018, this university is one of the best universities in the world.
My experience in Lisbon School of Economics and Management (one of the faculties of University of Lisbon) have been really positive. Good vibes between colleagues, some great teachers (others not so much but it’s perfectly normal).
It’s a nice option to study, to enjoy yourself and to make new friends.

The oldest school in the areas of economics and management in Portugal

I only finished now my first year here in ISEG and all I can say is that it was the BEST YEAR EVER! I already have been in another college here in Lisbon studying another course, but then I decided that what I really wanted to study was Management. I choose ISEG and it was the best choice. People is very nice, the location is amazing, because it’s near to the bars if you want to go out with friends after classes on a Thursday or Friday night.
People help each other wich is really nice. You’ll make friends for the rest of your life!!
